Its present capital is $4,500,000, with power to increase it to $5,000,000. Wasuincron, June 18, 1845. The Immortal Jackson—Honors to the Memory of the Brave—Col. R. M. Johnson—Meeting of Strangers and Temporary Residents—Criminal Court, §e. Se. One of the most respectable, interesting, harmo- nious, and patriotic little meetings with which we have ever had the honor to participate, was held in the gentleman’s parlor at Brown’s Hotel, this day at twelve o’clock. It was a meeting of strangers and temporary re- sidents in Washington, for the expression of their sense of respect due to the memory of the illustrious Andrew Jackson. Colonel R. M. Johnson, the noble old veteran of the Thames, was called to the chair. Vice Presi- dents—Col. R. McNair, of Kentueky ; James Breed- love, Esq. of Louisiana; Major David Lynch, of Pennsylvania, and Caleb Cushing, of Massachusetts. Secretary—George Plitt, Esq. of Pennsylvania. Colonel Johnson arose to state the object of the meeting. He was honored by the call of his fellow citizens, temporary residents, and sojourners in Washington, to attend at this meeting, convened for the grateful purpose of the expression of suitable testimonials to the memory of one of the greatest of one of the best, one of th 1 n t ¢ most distinguished our fellow-citizens—one who had died within a few days. He (Col. J) could not withhold the expres- sions of his gratitude at being appointed to preside over this intelligent assemblage ; and if there could be pleasure on so melee an occasion, to con- fess the pleasure which he felt in the honor thus conferred upon him. He was indeed pleased to see so intelligent and patriotic an assemblage—he was leased with the object of the meeting, and the Ronorable post assigned him in its deliberations. — He would, however, refrain from further remarks, in order fo receive such propositions as the members of the meeting might think fit to submit. Mr. E. A. Dunscoms, of New York, then arose and proposed a committee of three, subsequently modifying it to six, to draft a report and resolutions to be submitted to the meeting, prefacing his motion with w stirring little speech on the character and ser- vices of the deceased, in which he took occasion. to drop an appropriate compliment to the Hero of the Thames. — The resoluticn was adopted, and Messrs. H. C. Pope, of Kentueky; J. 1 umford, of New York; R. P. Flannakin, of Pennsylvania; E. A. Duns- comb, of New York; G. B. Wallis, of Virginia, and J. B. Guttorie, of Pennsylvania, were appointe: the committee. The committee retired, and after a short absence, returned and reported a most elo- quent and beautiful eulogium, with a series of ap- propriate resolutions, which, on being read to the meeting by the chairman of the committee, Hon. Cates Cusnine arose and said, (with some ancy observations, not distinctly. cenit, relative to his being accidentally in the city’ the services, and the character as a patriot of Gen’l Jackson, silenced all controversy. His fame was the fame of his country—his deeds were embalmed in the hearts of the people—his glory belonged to the lovers of freedom in our land and in all lands.— He (Mr. remembered, on an occasion not dis- similar to this,—he remembered, on the occasion of the deaths ~“ Adams and Jefferson, the remark of a distinguisl __ patriot, that throughout the land there should be nv expression—no voice—but the voice of veneration for the worth, the services and the vir- tues ef those illustrious men. Mr. C. would send abroad the same sentiment in regard to the patriot whom we are now called to mourn ; and with some highly complimentary remarks upon the excellence and appropriateness of the report and resolutions of the committee, he moved that they be unanimously adopted, which was agreedto. _ Col. Johnson then arose and said, that Col. Mason of the military of the district, had expressed his re- gret atnot having been apprised in time of thig meeting, or that the volunteers of the city would have testified their respect to this movement of the strangers and temporary residents, by some act of co-operation with them. : The proceedings were ordered to be printed in Lalas of the District, and the meeting adjourned. he Criminal Court for tho county of Washing- ton met this morningat 10 o’clock. The District At- torney, Mr. Fendall, then in his place, in a brief and apposite address, introduced the subject of the death of Gen. Andrew Jackson, the Beye, honors that were due, and in view thereot, moved that the court adjourn till to-morrow, Mr. James Hoban seconded the motion, and followed it up with a highly spirited eulogium upon the hero of New Or- Jeans, worthy of the orator—of the subject, and of the occasion ; and, in pursuance of the motion, the court adjourned. oy Various meetings, civic and military, are to come off in the three cities of the District, this evening, in testimony of respect to the memory of Jackson. The Naval Court Martial continued its sittings to- day, of which an associate will advise you. Lieut. Browning still the witness before the Board. W. Norr.—[Col. R. M. Johnson sends his respects to the editor of the New York Herald, and desires the weekly paper to be transmitted to him at the Great Crossings P. O., Scott county, Kentucky. The old Colonel is full of life and anecdote, and says that, like Sackett, at the Battle of the Thames, he is thankful that, as yet, “his time has not come ;” but that if war should ensue between the United States and Mexico, and her allies, he is ready to ‘pick his flint and try ’em agin.” He accounts for his good health and vivacity, as resulting from the fact that, he has dismissed ‘all anxiety, all ambition, all de- sire, for the Presidency, satisfied of the quiet honors of the private citizen, unless the bugle of war should call him to battle against the enemies of the Repub- lic. Many longyears to the old soldier, say we.] Wasnineton, June 18, 1845. History in Brief of the Removal of Mr. Van Nes: Appointments—Fashionable Resorts. We have seen a private letter of Gen. John P. Van Ness of this city, President of the Bank of the Metropolis, brother of the late Collector, remonstra- ting against the removal of the late incumbent of your Custom House. The letter was written before the resignation, so called, of the removed officer. We stand pledgea not to submit it for publication» although we can discover nothing in it which in our conception could possibly dispa the future pros- pects of a substitute appointment from the adminis- tration in favor of Cornelius P. Van Ness. The let- ter embraces a manly statement of the services—of the fidelity in office, at home and abroad, of this gentleman, and a protest decisive, but dignified, inst the influences of the cliques contending for his removal, being permitted to outweigh the merits, the services, and the qualifications of the late Col- lector. We argue from the tact of his submitting to a resignation, that a condition was attached of a satisfactory transfer to some other oflice. We are, indeed, apprised that there was such a condition, and that Mr. Van Ness was this day to have re- ceived his commission—to Spain most probably. There are, however, two other prominent candi- dates for this office, Hon. R. M. Saunders, of N. C., and R. P. Flannakin, Esq.,a distinguished polincian of his party, from western Pennsylvania. The Union of this evening may, perhaps, settle the question. Never has mortal man been more severely tried than Captain Polk, in the matter of the Collector of the port of New York. On the one hand he was fully informed of the services, in the late campaign. of Gov. Van Ness—his orthodoxy—his abilities,an the satisfaction he gave to the mercantile commu- nity: on the other, he was perplexed with the impor- tunities, strong and incessant, of new depatations every day, protesting against the retention of this subordinate of Captain ‘Tyler. These incessant im- portunities, from the very annoyance which they. gave, compelled the Executive, to the alternative of an unqualitied dismissal of Mr. Van Ness, or a com- promise of some sort. The President, it appears, apxious to the conciliation of both parties in the premises, has adopted the latter alternative. The end is yet to be seen. , ‘e are now apprehensive that the President will experience some trouble in the appointment of Mr. McLane, of Md.,to England. The “Old Hunkers” are muttering in ominous dissatisfaction—the “Young Democracie,” don’t know what to make of it; as if all parties were not aware that the mission had gone a begging for a customer. e learn that Thomas J Foot has been ap- pointed postmaster at Jersey City, in place of Thos. | Smith, and that the commission has gone on to-day. The President and Cabinet, if you will observe, have been out-weeding among the offices of the States pretty industriously. An exterminating vengeance is 0 be Visited upon the acts (or axes) of Granger and Ewing, in 1841.
