R. FENDALL, True copy. Attorney of the United States. Te W. Brent, Clerk. Wasutn v, June 11, 1845. ‘The President now holds his Cabinet Council, and transacts his official business at the State De- partment, and all applicants for office must approach throngh the vestibules of the Secretary of State. The inmates of the White House are, for the present lo- cated at Coleman’s, but the extreme warm weather of the last few days has induced the President to ad here to his original intention to go down and spend some few weeks at Old Point Comfort, where all necessary papers can be sigaed as well as at Wash- ington, and no interruption of public business can be occasioned by his absence, as the access is so easy, and the communication but twelve hours run from the White House to Old Point. The President has been complaining to-day of feeling very unwell ; in fact, he is pretty nearly broke down, being a hard worker, and, without he foe to the sea shore awhile, he may get very sick. £ There has been a great deal of talk and council- ling for some days past in relation to the Mex’ instalments. And men of business wonder at the causes of delay on the part of the present adminis- tration, for not immediately bringing the matter to a speeds explanation. The Secretary of State cannot or will not give any explanation, and the Secretary of the Treasury is too busy in other matters to pay any attention to it. Several of the principal claim- ants are here, and are miking earnest solicitations for the government to pay them their money (pro- vided tor by the last Congress in the appropriation bill.) They also recommend thata special minister be sent to Mexico, to arrange the matter, which could be all fixed in sixty days. Mr. Cushing has been mostly thonght of, and spoken by persons abroad, and by the democrats themselves, as a fit rson to select for this mission, combining, as Mr. ushing does, superior fewas in this line, and not wanting the salary attached to such employments,he would just perform the government job satisfactorily and creditably, and then retire. No American would be better received in Mexico, at this time of difficulty than Mr. Cushing. pt ‘The city is very quiet: weather broiling, and the eople preparing for sammer journeys to the White ulphur Springs, and to Old Point Comfort, to feast on the delicacies of the season, Where the finest liv- ing is to be found in all America. Philadelphia, [Correspondence of the Herald.] Prstaneurnia, June 14, 1845. There is but little news stirring. It has been suggest- ed that the late disastrous fire at the Academy of Fine Arts, was not the result of incendiarism, but of sponta- neous combustion of the old cotton, saturated with lin- seed oil, which had been used in cleaning the paintings, This is very probable, asthis waste cotton, it is said, had been habitually thrown under the arches, with other rubbish, where the fire originated. If so, however, it is strange that an accident has not occurred sooner ; and besides, the fact of two men coming trom the premises a few moments before the fire, has not yet been accounted for. Ishould like very well to wipe this Vandal stain from the character of our city, if I could do so with any degree of plausabilit You printed the name of the art- ist who painted the Itaising of the Dead Man to Life, wrong. You have it Austin, whereas it is Allston— Washington Allston, I did not putthe first name, and this, with my hasty chirography, may account for the mistake, We are in the midst of difficulties about our coroner. Some of our reformers made a blow at him in our last le- fitlature, and obtained the passage of a law prohibitin, im from burying the bodies of the dead whic! were found in his jurisdiction, but made no rovision as to who should perform this duty. The county [commissioners refused to reimbur: the coroner whenever he undertook to perform the la: offices to those whose friends and relatives could not be found, and consequently he was cumpelled to desist. He ent a communication to the county board upon the sub- ject, but being whig and native, they refused to make any provision upon the subject. The consequence is, that he does not now bury; bodies have been leit to the disposal of the neighborhood where foud, or left expose: tothe air. In one instance, the body of a child found drowned in the Delaware, was let float of again, and ef- forts have been made to arouse public indignation agaii the corouer; when the fact is, that he has nothing whi ever to do with it, having no more authority to bury a dead body than has any private man. The whole fault i th our County Commissioners, and whig and ni tive members of the late Legislature, through whose stupid bungling, and dishonest fishing for popularity, by means of the false cry of reform rod economy, the mo- ral sense of our citizens has been outraged, and t) feelings of humanity has been shocked. Notwithst ing they were the men who did the wrong, yet they are base enough to attempt to shift the consequences from their own shoulders, to those of a who resisted the origin of the outrage with might and main, and who, when unsuccessful, vainly endeavored to have something done by which it might have been avoided. The special election for Commissioners of Spring Gar- den is now in progress. The natives are trying their strength in this strong hold; but the democrats are sa: guine of defeating them. God grant that such an infa- mous party may speeaily be overthrown. But little was done fn the stock market today, and State 5's fell off a quarter. With the exception of some few cases of fever not con- sidered of a dangerous type, the island was healthy. The distress and excitement occasioned by the late destructive fire in Bridgtown, were fast disappearing be- ‘raut of money made by the local le- iberal donations of some few of the sister colonies, and the donation of one thousand pounds sterling from Halifax. From the other Islands and Colonies there is but little of general interest to communicate. The domes ligence relates exclusively to their agricultural pros- year, which are said to be rather gloomy on account of the prevalence of dry wea- ther, and the inability of the planters to follow up the or- dinary feature of estate cultivation.
