Notwithstand- ing the fluctuations from day to-day, there is a steady do} cline and prices are gradually sinking. We can find no cause for this state of things in the money market. Ca- pital is plenty and the rate of interest below the legal point. The excitement in relation to our foreign affairs has, in a measure, subsided, and we see nothing in the perspective likely to destroy or disturb the amicable terms upon which we now stand with the principal pow- ers of the world. There is no visible cause why there should not be an immediate and permanent improvement in the stock market. The failure of the Bank of St. Clair, Michigan, and the thousand other rumors in eirculation with regard to the other banks of Michigan and some of the Ohio banks, have created an excitement in that section almost unpre- cedented. Meetings have been held in several towns in the northern part of Ohio, and the feeling growing out of the explosion of this shinplaster bank will have a very great influence in checking the bank fever that was gain- ing ground so rapidly in Ohio since the passage of the new bank law in that State. Foars are entertained that the Oakland county Bank and the Farmers’ and Me- chanics’ Bank of Detroit would follow suit. The Eafay- ette Bank of Cincinnati has refused to take the notes of the Norwalk Bank and the Sandusky Bank, The other banks of Cincinnati continued to receive them when presented. The Wooster Bank was suspected, but confi- dence had become re-established. These banks have been discredited on account of a supposed connection with Jesse Smith & Co. The Bank of Norwalk has of- ficia!ly denied any connection, and the Cashier states that not one dollar of the stock is owned by that firm, or that the bank is involved with thathouse in any way. The banks in Michigan will doubtless suffer some from the failure of the Bank of St.Clair, and it is possible the de- struction of all confidence in their issues may send them in for redemption too rapidly, and force them into a sus- pension, when they might, under other cirenmstances, have continued in operation and eventually redeemed every one of their notes. It is impossible during the ex- istence of the excitement in that section of the country, to arrive at any correct conclusions as to the standing of the banks coming under the suspicions of the people in the vicinity of their locations. We annex the latest returns of the Ohio banks alluded to. That institution and the Bank of Sandusky, are goverament deposit banks, and according to the last statement of the Secretary of the Treasury, the former had thirteen dollars of the public money, and the latter thirty-four dollars. The Michigan Insurance Company of Detroit is reported to be affected by the excitement, but the last statement shows the af- fairs of the company to be not only solvent but perfectly sound and healthy. Smith have en- joyed an unlimited credit throughout the western coun- try aud have endorsed many of the bills of the Bank of St. Clair. Holders of these endorsed bills flatter them- selves that they are good, and that they will be redeem, ed in full. In this they will, without doubt, be much dis- appointed. They will learn by dear experience that spe- culating financiers are very unsafe bankers, and are the last persons in the world who should have control of banking institutions, with the power to manufacture mo ney to order, and to any amount. We have in this vici- nity some of these speculating financiers, and the public must look out for an explosion somewhat similar to that experienced in Detroit. We have repeatedly put the people of this city upon their guard, and should they be caught with the paper promises of in banks in this neighborhood in their possession, it will not be our fault. We advise every one to be cautious. The exports from Mobile this season have been unusu- ally large. The receipts of Cotton up to May 2d, 1845, were greater than in any previous season, exceeding by 68,866 bales the receipts for the same period in 1843, the year of the great crop, and by 25,209 the total receipts for that year. It will be scen on reference to the above table that in previous seasons the receipts of Cot- ton from the Ist of May to the 1st of September have been very light. The bales of Cotton exported from Mobile this season have averaged about four hundred and ninety pounds each, and the average value of each pound about five cents. This is a much better averageas regards pri- ces than we anticipated early inthe season. Already about one quarter of the total cotton crop of the country is received at Mobil 5 and it is reasonable to suppose that a more extensive cul- tivation of the lands of Alabama, will Bive Mobile a posi tion asa cotton depot, nearly as important as that of New Orleans.
