and rained for some ny or three hours without mise ORereidby thirsty earsh.. dep nog elile Oliver fot drop and er: fat ot re This chauge in the weather, from a sshiny-and hot summer day, was watched w mach interest by ie who smentee to attend t! soirée dansgmt, and, very probably, many young ‘es. almost ofoke their hearts when, instead of “ee being a brief thunder gi and then clear weather, the continued rain put their hard-hearted pa’s aod ma’s in the humor to insist on those ten- der-hearted creatures staying at home. This rain, doubtless, kept at home or from the dance numberof persons who would otherwise have been present to enjoy themselves— yet, however, much it was to be regretted tor the sake of Monsieur Korponay’a pocket, which would doubtless have benefitted the more, the greater the number of per- sons present—yet in no wise detracted from the gaiety, the joyousness, the hilarity aad determina- tion to be pleased and gratified which was mani- fasted by all who were present, and who certainly did their best to please and be pleased, and.evi- dently succeeded, it appearances ay criterion. The place of meeting was Carus jaloon, and a beautiful feature in the arrangements of the even- ing vas the profusion of plants with which the staircase leading to the saloon, and the saloon itselt, were decorated. Orange trees in full bloom, azaleas , roses, geraniums, myrtles, pweonys, tulips, and various other brilliant or sweet floweri shrubs, were there in profusion. This was quite a feature, and certainly a most pleasing one, and the flowers appeared to divide with the ladies the attention of some of the CC acereg The room was brilliantly lighted by the bright aes of the gleaming eyes of beauty, aided by four hun- dred and twenty-seven wax candles, which made it just as brilliant as could be wished. Then there was excellent music, and, to crown all, Monsieur de Korponay the master ot ceremonies. Indeed, the asreacermenie were perfect. And now to the company. It was varied, of course, as all companies are, and had both ‘* beaaty and the b—— no, [ must not say that—there were no beasts there, though all were not beauties. As I had been informed, Mrs. Fleishman’s pupils (also pupils of Mr. Korponay) were there, and where she managed to get so many sweet, interesting creatares from, I don’t exactly know, ter there was not one ugly one among them. They reflected too great credit upon Mr. K. for the gracefulness of their dancing, and the admirable manner in which they wenc through the evolutions of the far-famed Polka, the waltz, the mazourka, the cotillion, and whatever else was danced. Miss M. de K- attracted particular attention, as being one of the most beautiful of the beauties present ; and indeed she seemed “A thing all liehtness, life and glee— One of the shapes we see! To meet in visions‘of the nigt ht 5 And should they greet our Weklog sight, Imagine that we dream.” Then Miss M. B . She, too, was one of nature’s flowers of loveliness. “Not fairer grows the lly of the vale, Whose bosom opens to the vernal gale ; While health, that rises foun the new-born day, Broathes oer her cheek the softest flush of May.” Nor were these all who attracted attention, and fixed the gaze and admiration of the gentlemen. ‘There was variety to suit every taste—the blonde and the brunette, the fair-haired gentle lassies and the dark haired aspiring fair ones, who command your admiration—there was cheerful laughter and animated conversation, the debutante and the wall flower. Nor must I omit to mention the queen of the evening, Miss Louisa A- She was the Fairest where all is beautiful and bright! With what 0 grace she glides among the flowers, ‘That smile around her, bowing at her touch. And it would be an unpardenable oversight to neg- lect Miss D—-—, the daughter of a well-known democrat in this metropolis, who is so ardent in his feelings that the sight of a whig almost sends him into convulsions. But I must uot forget Mrs C- 3. Though a married lady, yet she and her husband were each in their order two of the ornaments of the room, though the lady was one of those whose appear- ance would intimate that she admired * Your quiet, pleasant chamber, with the rose vine Woven round the casement, rather than the ball room, or as a poet once wick- edly said, ‘ighted halls Crommed full of laa ‘and fiddles, Bat [have not time to enlarge on the re ciaima to n 1ee of all who deserve 1. riad 1, tall Would perhaps occupy more room than he Herald could spare. Ia brief, then, I may say, that though the majority ot the ladies were indebted to the gifts of nature for their attractions, and were attired with becoming grace, neatness and beauty, yet there were those there, of whom it might be written, Halfthe charms that deck her face, ‘Arise from powder, shreds and lace. The great feature of the evening, it was pre- sumed, would be the ‘*Polka,” but, strange to say, the Polka was cast into the shade by the ‘*Ma- zourka.”” The performance of the former, by Mr. Korpouay and his pupils, was watched with great interest and pleasure, and the admirable ease and grace with which it was performed, extorted the acdiniratiomot all; but the admiration wasso much stronger for the Mazourka cotillion, which was danced by Mr Korponay and his pupils, wih inim. itable grace and effect—so lively and. 9 sprightly , so affectionate and touching, and withal admirably was the dance performed, and so sweet and inter- estiug, too, were the lovely performers, that on its conclusion, the company gave an irrepressible burst o} applause, manifesting ¢! gratification by elappiog their hands and knoc ng their feet (the ledies their pretty ones, too) on the floor. The etry of notion had absolutely been realized. he Polka cotillion and the quadrille Frangaise were alao on the list, and were danced with much grace and pleasure by those engaged in that amusement, and watched with undisguised admiration by the wail flowers. I must not forget to notice the male portion of creation which were present, for some of them would attract attention any and every where. There was Mr. —, the diplomatist, who is really A phantom, fashionably th ‘With limb of iath, and (not) bearded chin. If his diplomacy is at all like his person, it cer! ly is not only very thin, but very awkward too, and with his cockney gait and appearance, he puts one irresistibly in mind of Chaucer’s lines— Full long are both his spindle shanks, and lean Just like a walking stick—no calf inseen. And then, too, the man evidently thinks he is so graceful—such a lady-killer—so irresistible— He chats like popinjay, And struts with phiz tremendously erect. ‘Though his knees seem as if they were made not to allow him to straighten himself, and wien danc- ing—waltzing particularly—or what he thinks is waltzing, he makes a figure which more nearly re- presents the letter Z than any other I can think of at present. But enough of him; perhaps he don’t know his faults of appearance and style, and ’tis almost a pity to undeceive him. Then there was Mr. G- » who seemed quite forlorn during a portion of the evening, and the bi Jance was pleasantly engaged in carrving a feir lady’s bouquet. Tis not his talent to conceal his thoughts, And carry smiles and sunshine in his face, When discontent sits heavy at his heart. There was Mr. M———, trom the sunny eouth, of whom it may be eaid— Lordly looked, and lordly limbed in he,— A trame of iron, @ right arm long and A rough, loud voice, a visage somedale ark, And of Mr. Smith—an evphoniovs name that— what shall! say. J hardly now what y' ia the Midsummer’s Night’s Dream is his descrip: ton. “A sweet faced man; © proper man as one shall see in a summer’s day ; a most lovely gentle- manlike man.” That will do for his description. Then to Mr. C——s, will the following lines apply. His eyes are like the eagle's, yet sometimes Lier the dove’s; and at his will he wins All hearts with softness, or with spirit nvves. But! must conclude. My strain has alren on to a considerable length, and | may not we more space. In few worde, the Saloon was admi- rably decorated, the company was select, blythe, cheerfal, gay, animated, and evidently enjoyed themse: Ives; the music was good, the aancing was better, the Polka was beautiful, ‘the Polka Quad- rille new, pleasing, and beauufully dancea, and the Mazourka, was enchanting, positively ravish- ing, and carried away the palm even from the Poika. The ladies were in the main beautiful, and neatly and becomingly dreesed; the gentlemen gal- lant, the enjoyment almost perfect, and Monsieur De Korponay the very beau-idea lot a master of the ceremonies, @ pertect gentleman, and unmistakea- bly master of his art; and Mrs.’ Fieischman u pils did eredit to her academy and Mr. K's skill in struction. And so until the next opp sents itself—which itis to be hoped wi long—Good-bye. —____ Philadelphia, (Correspondence of the Herald.)
