I take the liberty of addressing you. Some of your correspondents occasionally refer to the ru- mor of the transfer of a portion of the cabinet toa different ephere of action; rely upon it, no such change will be made. The cabinet, as at present organized, is a complete wnit, and will not soon be dissolved. You may suppose that, by this time, the asnoyance of office-seekers would have ceased —and that the President would now have a little rest. But it is not so. The furor seems to be growing stronger. Among the many stratagems at work here, those having for their object the eject. ment of our efficient Collector, Mr. Van Ness, seem to engross the most atteption. Some of the Albany gentry, with Mr. O'Sullivan in their train, would be glad to make you believe that Mr. Van Ness is already removed, and one of their clique put in his place. But, rely upon it;the cabinet have not even had the subject before them for dis cussion, much less made a decision on it. Being conversant with New York affairs, allow me to saya few words in regard to the very few complaints I have heard ageinst the present Cole lector, The first one was, the removal of the con- scientious (eo said the Whig papers) cashier, em- ployed by Mr. Curtis. The New York merchants are, by this time, convinced that the present cash- ier is full as conscientious, and courteous also, as was his predeceesor; no complaint having been made against his honesty, or gentlemanly conduct. Complaint No. two, was, that Mr. Van Ness ne- glected the interests of the importers and mer- chants, by making so many new appcintments.— Now, if boldly assert, (and challenge denial,) that Ro true charge was ever made against an officer since Mr. V. N. was appointed. When he took his seat, there was a great pressure of business in the Custom House. immediately gave orders for the clerks to be at their desks at 9 A.M. in- stead of 10 A. M., (an order unheard of in that department,) merely to accommodate the mer- chants and importers. The removal of Mr. Hone, the Assistant Collec- tor, was another cause, (for the time being,) of complaint. But { venture to aesert that the sub- stitution of Mr. Bogardusin place of Mr. Hone, has cM) this time given satisfaction to all parties. Mr. One, as you have reason to know, was one of those aristocratic beings, who, “ dressed in a little brief authority, enact such,”—you know the adage. {[t was seldom that justice or civility could be obtained from him. r. Bogardus, on the other hand, is gentlemanly and courteous to all — Having hiroself both a theoretical and practical knowledge of the mercantile business of the city, he is perfectly qualified to decide the many impor- tant questions which are hourly laid before him; and even, when obliged to differ in opinion with the merchant, his gentlemanly conduct and remark, tend to convince him that the fault is in the law (if any) and not in the Collector, so different from Mr. Hone, who would merely give his tpse dizit, with- out referring to any law. 5 Mr. Van Ness’s conduct with regard to Henry E. Riell isthe last complaint. A i ‘oaks of the democracy now. say that the Collector did right, and that he displayed a degree of firmness peldems exhibited by one in his situation. Loud complaints have been made of “ Custom House influence” brought to bearon ourcharter elections. Mr. Van Ness well knew that it Mr. Riell persisted in his determination, he would not only givea semblance of truth to these complaints, but like- wise endanger the suceess of the party; he therefore adopted such measures as he judged best to ensure the success of the democratic ticket. “* Whence thence,” (to quote the language of a Western paper, on a somewhat similar occasion,) these reiterated attacks on Mr. Van Ness? In, whose way does he stand? Who is to be elevated by lowering him ?_ How isthe party to be elevated by stripping him of his office ? they who seek his overthrow, avow the mean and despicable motives which urge them on ? Morris Multicaulis does not flourish as well as it did some years since. The enemies of Mr. Van Ness must owe him some mighty, unappeasible grudge, which, like jealousy, maks the meat it feeds on, and darkens the vison of those afflicted. ‘* Cease, viper, ye bite a file.” In my next (if this suits you) I will “ show up” some of the tricks of the cligues who are at work here. Gov. Morton, Senators Dix and Dickinson, and some others, will be fine subjects fora half hour’s writing. It is now3P m—so good bye. New Yorker. Wasuineton, April 19, 1845. Another Peep behind the Scenes. By referring to the file of the New York Herald, as far back as the early part of December last, you will find that your correspondent ‘ Talleyrand,” writing you from this place, remarked that “from the most direct information from Tennessee, the names of Robert J. Walker, James Buchanan, Cave Johnzon, George Bancroft, Gov. Marcy, and R. M. Saunders,” are given as the probable candi- dates forthe Cabinet. In another letter from the same correspondent, in the same month, you will find the following extract:—‘‘It is understood that Tom Ritchie, now of the Richmond Enquirer, or J. F. H. Claiborne, will bé invited to take charge of it (the organ) editorially.” And also, ‘that Calhoun will not remain in the State department after the Texas business is over;” together with sundry other important intimations of coming events. How near these representations were allied to the facts, succeeding events have proved. The readers of the Herald had the first intimation in reference to these matters, and the information came not from doubtful sources. I have now some matters to speak of, which, at this juncture, may not be uninteresting, and, which you may rely on, are equally as certain, as the representations made to you five months since, and which have been verified almost to the letter. The result of the election in Connecticut has lately been one of the topics of conversation here, and the general opinion seems to prevail that some- body iz at fault somewhere ! The middling inter- ests charge that the recent nominations of Pre: dent Polk in that State, has had the effect of dis- heartening the democrats as a party, and the fall- ing off of the democratic vete, since last fall, indi- cates pretty plainly that a great portion of the locos remained away from the polls. It seems that the nominations to which ] have alluded were made against the wishes of the majority of the demo- crats there, and it is a very well settled fact that the parties who have hed the luck to get in at Norwich, New Haven, &c., are the representatives of a cligue only, and are cially obnoxious to the main body, who have hitherto done the work and the voting. Against this, the latter have protested, and the vote in Connecticut shows that the “ins” have not the means at hand to command or influence the voters. There can be no doubt that the steps taken there, will be traced; it isteonfidently hoped that such may be the result, and that the President will yet see the poli- of making such appointments there as well as elsewhere, as the majority of the party at least, will respond to. Of one matter, there isno doubt. James K. Polk has commenced with the best mo- tives, and with intents the most honest. There ex- ists no question that purpose is, and from the outset, has been, to conciliate all, and to umite the discordant elements. But a thousand representa- tions are constantly being made to him, in this or that man’s favor, and his appointments (as in Con- necticut) have, in some instances, been made, per= haps, too hastily ; an error which can readily be corrected. The couree of policy which he hi thought proper to pursue, thus has generally met with the approbation of his party—the great body of whom, infact, care little for the offices and less about who getsthem. Be it as it may, however, it is, ‘‘n fixed fact” that the locos have lost equal to eight votes in the House of Represen- tatives by this faux pas, and it will take but a few more “just such” to place them ina glorious mi- nority, in the lower branch. The aominations al- luded to, will not be confirmed, it is seid, any way by the Senate. The result of the election in your city, is very differently received however, aud the victory there, it is said, will amply counterbalance all the bad feeling engendered by the result in the land of “‘wooden nutmegs.” The “natives” have baen most essentially demolished, and it must be gratifying to the democracy that they have accom- plished so splendida triumph. But nows verrons, ‘ Ritchie says. Mie it to Boston has uadoubtedly had the effect to * stay the axe” in that quarter for the present, That the work will soon commence again, however, and that it will continue to go bravely on, until at last, the whigs are all cleared out, there is no doubt. But Bancroft has ascer- tained that some few ap id New England, ate not Cs cl eae has unquestionably moved “ a rec: th matter. "The result of his northern journey, therefore, will have the effect of arranging future matters 1a consonance with the feelings of the mass of the democrats in the New England oe where so many imporjant changes have alrea taken place.
