Bancroft—Young Polk — Office Beggars—Tyler’s Nominations—Brilliant Ball at Coleman Dear Bennerr :— The Senate, as you are aware, adjourned on Thursday last over to to-day, to take a breathing spell, aud they are now ready to sift the claims of poor Bancroft again, who may be seen pacing the avenue tremulous with agitation, though trying at the same time to assume an air of carelessness and unconcern, ‘The dense groups around Coleman’s porch are still convulsed with fear and hope upon the subject of Mr. Tyler’s nominations. “Hundreds are re- joiced they were passed over so cavalierly by the Senate, while the sympathies of thousands of others are deeply enlisted in their behalf. The case of young Col. Polk is the most, interesting of all, and torms the subject of conversation in every saloon in Washington. Every individual in the city, without, I believe, a single exception, is exceed- i should again ingly anxious that this be sent in, by his brother, to the Semate. Youm Polk is a glorious, noble fellow, beloved by al who know him, and I have reason to suspect that the Senate would willingly confirm his nom#mation, should the President overcome his scruples and adhere to Mr. Tyler’s choice. Office-be; ere continue to pour in by every arri- val, but Mr. Polk is so slow in his movements, and so difficult of access to the hungry throng, that many are getting very impatient and terrified at the isensible dwindling away of their V’s and X’s, sliding gently into Coleman’s capacious pock- et; and they are beginning to swear and fume, and are actually dropping off by fifties and hundreds aday. Poor Hallett looks the picture of despair, as he hears it whispered into his ear at every cor- ner, the chances of Gen. bea maiy 2 are aly gaining strength. Roberts, I believe, cut atic! for Boston. Very little concern is manifested here for the most of ‘Tyler’s nominations. The only two which seem to excite a universal interest are those of Picket for Havre, and young Polk. . Night before last, there was another brilliant impromptu ball in the splendid drawing-room at Coleman’s, given to the guests of the house their friends, by Mrs. G * * * of Mississippi, and Mrs *#**, It went off gloriously, and broke up at 12 0’clock precisely, (somelsay half-past) out ot due respect for the Sabbath. Not teeling inclined to participate in the festivities, (i.e. not being prnivi- leged, in other words,) I contented myself with the rights of a bachelor boarder, which are to lean against the door, and cast in, from time to time, an admiring glance. Not wishing to be invidious, I will not single out some cf the belles who graced this brilliant féte, and pass by othersin sikace. A splendid supper, got up in Coleman’s usaal style, terminated the festivities of the occasion. More anon. Tue AvgeNvE ARIEL. Wasuinton, March 9, 1845. J.G, Bennerr, Eeq.— Asitis the Sabbath, the fire is momentarily suspen- ded under the great political cauldron, and its steam- ing and hissing eflervescence have partiallysubsided. Few loungers along the streetse—few loafers in the oyster houses, because they are shut up by a Jaw of the Corporation—few of the mixed multitude from the four winds of heaven visible, except im the great hotels, where the throngs are denser than ever, and the conversations quite as entertaining and uniform. Allrelating to the public offices, are hankering and impatient for the teats of the Trea- sury cow. r Burton has taken the Olympic, lately occupied by Mrs. Timm, of whom we have lost our reckon- ing. Where she and her company have gone, we don’t know, nor when taey went, nor how, nor whether they are Roan, 7h, or lingering in town, poor things. Burton does pretty well, and wilt continue to do well for several weeks to come; for the strangers among us seem resolved upon uw four mile and repeat for the spoils. Yankee Hill and Dempster gave a mixed concert last night, of anecdotes and songs. They had a genteel audi- ence ; but they were not preased for room, as we have seen in the case of the niggersingers. Nigger dancers and Mesmerism hold the balance of power, always excepting social parties, at which there is a chance for a supper free of cost. _ Coleman gave a private hop last night, and had the Swiss harpists, including also a fiddle and cla- rionet, to play for the party: A quiet and elegant party, aud very agreeable, by the by. The Tumor concerning the ejection from office of Skinner and Dr. Mitler turns out to be the raw fabric. Col. Gardner, who was Nie! by common consent into the chair vacated by Col. Skinner, tells us to-day that not having as yet, offi- cially or semi-officially, received a notice of -his appointment, he is inclined tothink it has not been made. So we think. Every day now for a season will probably evolve some new development—some new colors or for in the political kaleidescope, ominousor auspicious for the future. Nous verrons. w. Philadelphia, (Correspondence of the Herald.] Puapgtruta, March 10, 1845. Since Sunday morning we have been burdened by adull, northeast wind, accompanied by rain, hail, and this morning a smart sprinkling of snow The latter, however, melted as soon asit fell, and we now are enjoying the pleasures of a cold, chilly rain. The weather, to use an expression of Sam Slick, is extremely juicy. The Court of Quarter Sessions have been en- goged to-day in the trial of a noted character, yclept Colonel Digby, who has been amusing him- self for some time past by obtaining nick nacks from our citizens without designing to return a quid proquo. There seems to besome difficulty, u fixing him, as he has already been acquitted os two indictments, but there are so many charge against him, that I suppose some will take effect, and he must fail at last. ‘ - The rowdy spirit manifests itself occasionally, betokening something for the coming summer, unless the authorities are awake. e darkies have a row now and then—the firemen, no not the firemen—but the rowdies who*hang about the companies, continue to amuse themegelves by slight skirmishes, and I should not be surprised to see these ripen into something more serious, if not checked in time. The Academy of Fine Arts have a Tree exhibition ef pictures, and of course they are patronized. tes In the political world here all is still, except the Tesignation of Buchanan frora the Senate, and all the talk is asto his successor. There is nothing much doing here; the weather 1s dull, and I must defer matters I had contemplated apeakree about until an indisposition, under which | am at present laboring, has moderated. , Tue Unirep States anp Mextco.—In confirma- tion of the reports which have been in circulation here, and have already feund their way into the eattern papers, we learn that the Minister of Mexice to this coun- try (Gen. Almonte) has signified to this Government the termination of his mission, in consequence of the pas- sage of the act for the annexation to the United States of the Province of Texas. He has addressed a letter to the Secretary of State entering a solemn protest, in the name of his Gevernment, against that law, which he declares to be en act ot aggression the most unjust that modern history records, being, as he alleges, the spoliation of a friendly nation of a considerable of its territory.
