Affairs of ihe New Yark Pilots—Passage of their Resolutions—Towching Fihabition of the Deaf and Dumb Scholars—Singulur Publication—Cele- bration of the 22d, &c. Drax Sir— In my last letter it was said that the resolutions upon the pilot laws, reported by Senator Jones, would surely pass the Legislature. It may possi- bly be that this statement was excusably errone- ous. The votes of the democratic Senators were counted in favor of the passage of the resolutions, but already Senators Barlow, Porter and Clarke have made speeches in opposition to the resolu- tions, and have given notice that they should vote against them. It is possible, therefore, that with the aid of our native Senator, the whigs and the no-monopoly democrats, the pilets will be non- snited, so far as our State Legislature is concerned. A savage attack upon Grovernor Wright has made its appearance in the Evening Post, which says that Mr. Wright has always been on this question of the pilot laws, “evidently and deplorably wrong.” Would it not be perfectly proper and fair for Con- = to allow the pilots of Savannah and New Or- leans to make their services available at the port of New York? Why not? Senator Hard madea capital speech in favor of your pilots, on Friday last. He isa warm friend of Gov. Wright; was in Congress withhim. If the Governor has ‘always been on this subject ‘evidently and deplorably wrong”— not only has Senator Hard shared ia the error, but he still persists in refusing to be enlightened. The same is the case with Senatora Jones, Beers, and Johnson, all democrats, who have spoken in favor of theresolutions. Since this was written, the pilots have, [ am glad to say, carried their point by a vote of 11 to 10. A very interesting exhibition in favor of the Deaf and Dumb Institute, of New York, took pluce on Friday evening in the Assembly Cham- ber, which was crewded to its utmust capacity with fair ladies, legislators and citizens. Genera! Wetmore and Mr. Peet were the conductors of the exhibition, Last year an appropriation of five thousand dollars was made by the Legislature, anc the considerate managershave this year adopted & plan to secure ten or even fifteen thousand dollars. which it is hoped they may get. WereI a mem- ber of the Legislature I would willingly ask twen ty thousand dollars, because the mute appeals o/ two of the prettiest and most fascinating girls | ever saw, were vastly more effective than the words of allthe superintendents and directors it Christendom. It is evidence of wisdom, and ma; be considered a masteretroke of policy onthe part o Mr. Peet, the principal ot the Deaf and Damb Insti tute—this selection of two beautiful creatures a: exponents or demonstrators of the benefits and ad vantages derivable trom a courze of instruction.— Legislators sought an introduction to these young and accomplishea ladies, and through the medium of pencil and paper, a very interesting and appa rently pleasing conversation was kept up on @ vari ety of subjects. It is, perhaps, not too inuch te say that the iofluence exerted by these smiling and art- less girls, will be more eff-ctive than anything elsr in causing a handsome appropriation or donatio: from the State, to advance and promote the inter ests and welfare of the institute. The 22d instant was very properly and handsome ly celebrated by the Emmet Guards, an effective and patriotic corps of adopted citizens. At eleven o’clock this company aod a large concourse of cit- izens assemb'ed at the Capitol, where the feature of the day consisted in an admirable address fron Robert Emmet Temple, Esq. The only fault ix this address was its brevity. ie A pamphlet has made its appearance in this city in a somewhat clandestine manner, which pro mises to create almost as much sensation among religious and secular circles as did the Onderdoni. trial. {[t is entitled * Pulpit Sketches, or Dream: of a Pew-Holder.” The publisher, Joel Munsell, ir now in jail, between two criminals, for 30 days, ad judged by Recorder Parmalee to be in contempt fo; refusing to answer a question touching the author. p of said pamphlet, propounded by the Grand ury. Munsell had the choice to pay two hundre and fifty dollars, or etand the imprisonment. He preferred the lest named penalty. [tis suggestec that Gov. Wright will visit this palpable violation of the freedom of the press, by granting @ pardon It seems that this pamphlet, circulated sparingly through the Post Office, is passicly severe upon the Rev. Mr. Iscariot or the Rev. J. N C.; which ini- tials, as everybody supposes belong to ‘the Rev. J N. Campbell, a very popular, learned, and worthy divine. You may call to mind that this is the cler- gyman who had a skirmish with General Jackson, tor and on account of the celebrated Mrs. Eaton, and who came to Albany, as it is said, on a salary of three thousand per annum, at the request of the Hon. Ambrose Spencer, then a member of Congress The libel by implication, contained in the pamphlet, has been taken up not by Dr. Campbell, but by some injudicious friends and members of his church, and it has thus far proceeded to the incarceration ‘of a worthy and respectable publisher, simply because he refused to make known the name of the author. This may be in accordance with law—but it is ex- ceedingly out of order. Leatstators or New Yorx, Feb. 25.—In the Senate, numerous petitions were presented and re- ferred. Among the reports of committees, resolu- tions, &c., was a motion by Mr Folsom instructing the committee to procure a flag staff for the display of the National Flag.on anniversary occasions—a suggestion entitled toa favorable consideration. The bill to enable resident aliens to held and con- vey real estate, was ordered to a third reading. The residue of the day was spent in committee of the whole on the bill to pay the guard organized for the protection of the Cy at Hudson, which was explained and supported by Mr. Beekman. in the House, atter petitions and reports of com- mittees, the Dill t to continue and extend the ees priaticn in aid of the institution for the Deaf and Dumb wasifpassed without a dissenting vote. Lee called for the consideration of the resolutien instructing the select committee on the subject of Texas to report to-morrow; but the motion was laid on the table, yeas 49, nays 48. The House refused to consider T. RK. Lee’s resolution for an adjourament of the Legislature on the 31st March. Mr. Sweeney laid on the table a resolution to re- consider the vote of yesterday refusing leave to in- troduce a bill to organize the new county of Una- dilla. The resolutions of Mr. Howerd, calling for information relative to the Black River and Gene- see Valley Canals, was taken up on motion of Mr. Bevins, and adopted. Mr. Harris called up the re- solution to recommit the bill to incorporate the Troy and Greenbush Railroad Association to the Railroad Committee. A long debate ensued The motion finally prevailed, with instructions tc the committee to report oa the Ist March. ‘The Pilot resolutions came down from the Senate, and a struggle ensued as to their reference, Mr. Mor- on moving the New York delegation, aad Mr. Russell the Committee of the Whole; in the midst of which the House adjourned.—Albany Argus. On the 26th the House refused by a vote of 76 to 23 to concur in the Senate resolution, relative to the pilots. Bory Arrempt To Break Jat.—Robert Dunbar, and a mannamed Baker, two prisoners coufined in Jail for burglary, the latter having been tried, con victed and sentenced to Sing Sing for two years, the ‘other not yet tried, were detectedin an attempt to escape on Sunday evening last. Dunbar hed before made two at tempts to escape, but had been detected by the keeper in time to frustrate his designs. After the second attempt he had been ironed to the floor. It was fonnd that he had sawed{off hisfohain, and had cut through two iron bars of the door of his cell, and escaped through the aperture thus made, carrying with himthe bars, which were an inch and a half in width, and three. eighths ofaninch in thickness, and which weighed about four pounds each.— Having gained the hall, he had commenced operations on the outer window, had partly sawed one of the bare, and would have soon consummated his escape, but’ was cought at theoritical moment.
