Sree ee BY THE SOUTHERN MAIL. |, Washington. [@orrespondeneé of the Herald J Tue Capiron, Wasmvaron, Wedoesdiy, 5 P. M i Election of President and Vice President in the Electoral College — Exe of Representatives~ Lavirs fainting in the Gal- leries—Arrival of the President Elect James G. Bunvext, Esq: The votes of the several States for President and Vice President were counted to day in the House of Representatives, in presence of the members of the Senate, and an immense assemblage of +pecta- tors, including several hundreds of beautiful and elegantly attired females. The crowd was such that several fainted in the ladies’ gallery, owing to the want ot gullantry on the part of the members in not extending aninvitation to admit them upon the floor as in 1840. The result of the count will be communicated in regular proceedings, and the official election of James K. Polk as President of the United States, and George M. Dallas as Vice, is now declared to the world, and his political op- ponents must be well aware “* Who and what he is.” He arrives here to-morrow evening, and will be received with every honor, and escortedto his elegant rooms at Coleman,s popular hotel ‘a fall account of proceedings will be forwarded. ‘Nothing was coneluded to-day except the result of the Presidential election. Wasuineton, Wednesday, Feb. 12, 1845 The Ladies—The House— The Theatres —Actors and Actrosses. J. G. Benner, Esq. :— The scene of congregated beauty in the galleries of the House to-day, transcended, we dare allege, the accumulation of bright eyes at the Brigadier General’s late benefit at the Tabernacle of David Hale. The spectacle of the brilliant array ot bright faces over the Speaker's chair was en- chanting, and miraeulously beneficial to weak eyes. Aad all the ladies, bless their sweet souls, went away, net asking “ who is James K. Polk?” but satisfied that he is de facto, de jure, prima facie, and bona fide, the President of the United States of America. ‘What's to be done, Mr. Editor, for our National ‘Theatre and Olympic Saloon? With good com panies, and good pieces, they are starving to death: Can’t we have a compromise 2 It is impossible for Washington City to afford a patronage sufficient for the oil and the fiddles of two theatres. It can- not be done. We must have either a compromise ora collaps At the National last night, Mr. Conner performed excellently well the cha- racter of Werner, in Byron’s tragedy of that nam+; but the young maa who acted the part of Ulric was in most pre requisites in- efficient. At Mra Timm's Olympic, we had lighter entertainments, buc not the lees agrera- ble on that account. Mrs. Timm sings well, a+ Mitcheli’a supporters, every one of them will reapond. Mr Brnston is quite a clever songster and actor—Miss Clarendon needs ouly to be seep and heard for herself, and Miss St Clair, with a fizure for a seniptor’s study, and the action of a Nureid, makes such a harmony of motion with those harmonious legs, as makes old bachelors weep. Professor Bonneville and lady, are enlightening us meantime on the aubject of Mesmeriem. What mystery there is in this secience—what wonder-— with no inconsiderable concommitant of humbug- gery , es’a to-night. w. Party.atMr. Ri nee abelian) TWN LY-CIGHTH CONGRESS, BRCOND SERBION.
