The following sketch of Captain Rynders? fife we have obtained trom various authentic. sources It will be seen by it, that in him are found the ete ments which admirably qualify him for # pop leader of the Don Giovanni school—bold, re less and fearless, with more wit than wisdom, and more promptitude tha udence—arbitious of being a popular hero—devoted to women, wine, and tree tiving—fond of fun aod tight, and always ready to protect the women and the weak, aud de- fend the right against 211 oc He was bernin the village eounty, New York, some +! an’ winters ago From the age of ten to the y (832, Mr. Rynders operated upon the North River, first as a hand, then as commander, whea he got the title of cap- tain, and lastly as owner of two vessels. During this period he sailed on several foreign voyages, to different parts of the world. In these voyages occurred many exciting incidents end thrilling adventures, which we have no room to relate. in °82, the yeer of the cholera, while in the own- ership aud command of vessels upon the North River, Captain Rynders, through sundry bad debts and speculations upon the tuif, to which he has always been slightly addicted, failed, ag many dis- Ungnished individuals have doze before and since Unsuccessful in settling up his debts, and his creditors being inexorable, in Dec. 1882, Capt. R sailed for New Orleans. Asa specimen of the in- cidents which chequered his life upon the ocean, we may relaie one or two adventures upon thic passage to New Orleans, as given to us by a pas- senger and eye-witness. The captain of the pack- et was taken sicis, and the whole duty devolved upon the mate. The créw became reiractory, disobedient, and mutinous. Capt. Rynders saw the p of the ship, and, at the risk of his life, took side with the mate, seized the helm, and by his boldness and decision, Red Rover like, quelle: the mu >and restored order. By this coup dé main, Capt. Rynders. saved the ship from the rocks, wnen she was fast driving, having beer steered upon a wrong course, and all on board from: shipwreck. The ship was alterwards chased by ¢ pirate, te the great horror and alarm of all o: board, except our Don Giovani. He resolved on ¢ fight, and to that end called all hands to quarters, mustered all the old swords, muskets, handspikes and implements of fight which could be found or board, and desperately resolved to repel boarders, or die in the attempt. The pirate came alongside, but on discovering the uncivil reception whicl they were likely to meet with, they very Wisely concluded to keep out of miscitief, and hauled off The commander of the vessel returned public thauks to Captain Ryndeis, restored to him hi: passagé money, and expressed his lasting obliga tions to him for twice saving his ship. Within three weeks after his artival in New Orleans, Captain Rynders became the hero of « popular row, in front of the Camp street Theatre, then managed by Caldwell end Russell. Thos: were the days when the notorious _pugilial O’Rourke was in his glory. On the evening in question, O’Rourke was to have a boxing match with a celebrated Englishman upon the boards o! the theatre. The theatre was jammed inside, ang thousands were collected in front of it, chiefly Irish, and triends of O’Rourke. In the excite menta report reached the crowd outside tha’ O’Rourke was getting whipped bythe English man. The Irish were roused to frenzy, and 1e- solved on tearing down the theatre. And now was the crisis when Captain Rynders stepped forth inthe tumult, made a speech to the exasperatec multitude, contradicted the report, told them the truth, and in short #0 tickled the mob that they actually bore him off in their arms in triumph. The next adventure of the Captain was with O'Rourke himself, on board the cabin of a steam- boat. O’Rourke hed lost money to a gentlemar at faro—got angry, and attempted to take hit lifé. At that time Captain Rynders knew nothing of the game, but was assured by others thei O’Rourke was in the wrong, and that his money had been fairly won. This was enongh for Cap tain Rynders. He» eeized a red hot poker, anc actually drove the pugilist out of the cabin O'Rourke aiterwards ucknowledged his e Waterford, Saratoga Severely a leans, and uv busine: ig it about six months after his arrival there, Cuptain Ryndersagain returned to New York, for the holy otirpose, which for twenly years he bas steadily iulgited, of taking care of his aged parents. gain returning to New Orleans, lus life war little else than a series of per-onal encounters, anc dventures, mainly on otner persons’ aecoupt. On one occasion ata masquerade bali, a fight arose hetween 2 couple of Virginians, and severa Frenchmen, with whom the majority present ap peared to take part. Not then un. j derstanding their true character as policemen, | Captain Rynders mistook them for common sol: diers, who bad no right above common citizens, In this fight, after receiving more wounds anc sears, he whipped the gens d’armes, who wen away, and returned with the whole guard o¢ twelve. To this guard, as soon as he understood their character, Captain Rynders surrendered with the honors of war. As soon as explanation was made, he was released from the calaboose. At New Orleans, his pockets were always oper to strangers in necessity, from the North. Many can attest his liberality, while few can remembey that they have ever repaid it. One gentlemen will certainly rember that be forgot to hand over to Captain Rynders’ mother several hundred dol lars, which he had despatched by him co her. At Natchez, Capt. Ryndere figured extensively, and always as leader of every circle in which he chanced to be, whether in bar room or ball room at the theatre or the race course, at meetings re- ligious or political. On one occasion a young man, a stranger to him, was, for some cause, be lieved to be unjustifiable, seized by the mob, whc had resolved on summarily lynching him. Capt Rynders promptly and characteristically resolver that they ‘Should do no such thing. He imme- diately raised a small party of filteen or twenty iriends, rushed in among the lynchers, and with bowie knife in one hand and_ pistol in the other, rescued the young man from his {rightful situation, and bore him off to a place of bee Upon the Mississippi Captain Rynders was a: well known, and became almost as famous for his exploits as Paul Jones in the Northern Seas. His adventurous and hair-breadth escapes would fill ; volume. Ia female intercourse, and in all matters of love, Captain Rynders has always eminently distinguished himsel!, and thought, felt, said, and done fis share. But as other maiters of this king now epgross the public attention, we shell pas: them over with # brief allusion to an afliir of honor, in which a tair Helen was concerned, winiet occurred of his passage, Upon a certain occasion, upto Wheeling. A gentleman had insulted the wife of one of the passengers on bvard. Such « circumstance could not transpire either without the knowledge of Captain Rynders, or without his taking up the quarrel. He did take it up in defence of the Jady. A challenge to mortal combat was the consequence. The Captain wat known to be a Yankee, and his opponent was noi a little surprised at his prompt acceptance of his challenge. He chose pisiols—seeonds were select ed-—the case became serious to the principals— while ‘‘outsiders” anticipated rich sport, and bets ran high thatthe Yankee would get shot. At the instance of all the passengers the boat was stopped, and the parties went on shore to fight. At thir stage of the proceedings the challenger suddenly roposed to fight with rifles, at forty paces, Capt Rynders promptly replied—“‘It’s my favorite wea pon—nothing could suit me better—it’s what J al ways used at the north to shoot deer with—rifles 11 shall be.” The challenger was taken all aback. stood aghast at the pluck of his opponent, and fin: ly refused to fight the “damned deer-shooting Yankee” on any terms, or with any weapons This aflair gave him unbounded eclat among the ladies, who, after that, could hardly be induced even to play a game of whist unless “ Captain Rynders” was one of party , Nor was it in this class of affairs only that Cap ran Rynders distinguished hunself upon the west em waters. Ou one occasion the boat got aground, and baffled all the expedients and exeruons of he: Commander and crew to get her «float again Mucn delay ocenrred, the water was falling, anc ihe passeagers outrageous and clame ous. At such A Crisis it could not be supposed that Capt. They juughed at his proposal. Sportsman-like Captain Rynders instantiy oflered to back up his Opinion with his money, and after making bets with the commander, mate, and otbers to the amount of about a thousand dollars, he took command of the crew, whom he promised, gold in hand, to reward, if euceessul, with a half eagle epiece, and a dollar toevch in any event. Captain Rynvers went to work 1 in twenty minutes the boat was «float in er, to the joy and astonishment o} all, and disappointment of those whage money Such hy our Don ¢ figured and ef but fair specimen of the life led it nitor several years, in which he flourished ia numberless eurring scenes, perso encounters, and thrilling adventures, WlM8g scare on every limb”—too numerous to be detailed in a daily paper. Women and wine, fighting, sporting, dancing, and free living, all re- ceived due attention, and some of them were never neglected. His friends always shared hia kindness and his purse, and his enemies often felt the force of other arguments. He has been heard to challenge any man to allege a dishovorable act of his life up to the present moment. Nor has he, aa has been charged, ever been indicted for an infamous offence. He hes always been the de- fender of the fair sex, and of the weaker party, and of his own countrymen where foreigners were concerned. And several persons now in the city relate a thrilling exploit of his a few years since at Toronto, in Upper Canada. upon the race course there, where an American horse had won the purse, and difficulty erose about giving up the money. The Canadians refused to give it up.— They said, ** No American horse shall carry off the money.” The yankees were cureed and duane and a fight followed. Captain Rynders not only decided that the money should be given up, but that no American there present should be insulted with impunity. ‘The fight grew furious, and a young American in one of the booths came near veing killed. Captain Rynders rushed to the spot, having in his hand a knife of feartul dimensions” “Stand back!’ shouted he. “ Nodamned yankee shali have a word to say here! said they. Capt. He became the terror of all who knew him there, and many amusing stories are told of the awe in which some of the Canadians stood of him and his “Arkansas tooth-pick.”” Several winters Captain Rynders spent at Wash- ‘ngton, where he is as well known as he is in New York, and where his character is highly spoken of by many who know him He was ar rested while there, together with Breedlove and Jewell, on suspicion of being connected with the abstraction of those “ Treasury notes,” of which so much has been said. He was taken to New Orleans for examination. The whole affair was thoroughly iivestigated, but not ihe slightest ground of suspicion tound egainathim. No indict- ment was obtained, :uor trivl had. The matter was entirely dropped@s against him. Indeed, so great was the confidence of bis friends in him at the lime, that they offered to go bail for him to any smount—a $100,000 if necessery. In that affair areat injustice was done him, for which no re- dress can ever be obtained. For eighteen yeas he has been jyed democrat of the ‘ uuterrified” class.
