The House then adjourn _ Philadelphia, | Correspondence of the Herald.) Paitapecruta, Jan. 2, 1845, The Herald has been in great demand ever since the “On- derdonk excitement.” ‘The faithful and impartial manner of its reports during the progress of that interesting af- fair has won it the admiration of both our lay and clerical gentlemen, not even excepting Dr. Tyng, whose head is itching for the mitre, but not the perquisites thereunto ap- pertaining. We have several “gentlemen of the pro, fession,” who are equally as fond of the sex as either of the Onderdonks! One of them has not been a Joseph in his day, and if report belies him not, this penchant still contiaues to the delight of several, who could testify in the same manner as those virtuous matrons by whom the Bishop was so unceremoniously martyred. ‘This reminds me of a remark ed to have been made by Bishop Kendcick, of the lic Church of this city. One of hw congregation (a “ native” of course) ask: Kim what w 3 the reason that he did uot procure more “native” priests to officiate at the altars of the Catholic Churches in th: couutry, The ami d truly pious prelate replied asmile upon his countenance (at the patriotism of his interrogator, no doubt,) that he had found it almost impossible to make Ame:ican priests, so loyal were the “natives” to the x and the scriptu al injunction. ‘These “ spare, oh ! spare our Bible” gentlemen are literal interpreters of ti cred volume, and can we wonder uch a feeling exists among those “who marr: ven ia macriuge:” Come, friend Bennett, you ‘@ a casuist in these matters, (as been evidenced in your admirable review of this Oaderdonk trial, ) am [ not Fight in attribating to theseclerical gentlemen so amiable a woukocas? They are always surcounded by a bevy of lovely women as well as numerous old maids and wid ows—all pious souls, who are alternately elated and shocked—powitively shocked at their dear man’s doing articularly ti they have not hada share in the froli ut more of this at another time. While my hand is in about church sffairs, that the Catholic churches of this city he them been most besutifully redecorated since the recent riots and LT have been informed from a creditable source, ore making of converts to that religion so re . ed member of the legal profes: .) bas joined the chareh of the * holy apostolic faith” trom a thorough convicuon of mind, ofter having been led to the perusal of its tenets, so ancient and scriptural, which have been continued to be handed down through ages, despite the rude assaults of Pagan, lufilel and Jew! The churches of St. Mary and St. Josephs have been elegantly ornamented by ‘hr pencil of Signor Monachesi, an Italian artist of descrved celebrity, who is fast winning his tof wealth and re pown. And now to secular offairs, with which | am per- haps better acquainted, Our city has been alive with amusements. The Opera was handsomely patronized, and “Old Diury” beamed onve more with youth, beaut} jon. The: eguins (delightful vocalists) have dyj ‘sunny South.” Concerts next opened upon us—Philharmonic and Mui cai Fund, with Ole Bull od Casella to relieve our pockets of the “Almighty dollar”—all crowded of course. Then follow the Theatres with the last imported comedy of Old Heads and hos Hearts,” with rival companies at the Chesnut and Wainut, tugging away at the inclina- tion of the natives, who were severally lured in the re supction establishments, to witness its impersonation. It is done well at both theatres, but I think “a leetle the best” the Walnut. Ofcourse tastes differ. Your com- Pany from the Park,to be candid, are not much. Marshall, at the Walnut, is a very Napoleon of a manager, and olay has an excellent com ny. Mr. Chapman, at his establishment, is an admirable comedian ani likely tori val Burton. General Welch, at the Circus, has produced an Equestrian spectacle, entitled Anthony Wayne, written by James Rees, Keq., of this city. Mr. Rees is an ardent lover of the drama, an excellent critic and talented litera ry gentleman. Heisdestinedto be enrolled among the dramatic authors ef America, for his many able produc tions. You will shortly have the new drama performed at the Park, where the General next proceeds. Some wars here have persuaded a very small and con- ceited individual connected with the press, to deliver a lecture, which he has consented to do, and arich treat may shortly be expected. ‘This lecturing mania hes not entirely disappeared, notwithstanding the ridicule which has july been beaped upon it by those who were well acquainted with the pllfering properties of the self styled original lecturers. Apropos, the Virginia Serenaders will intreduce Master Diamond this evenin, in his novel lecture on the Bull-gine an tations. An amiable essay for “ the times tothe audience locomotive imi- Narnan.
