(Correspondence of the Herald } Cincinnati, Dec. 19:h, 1844. Progress of the Queen City of the West—Enter- prize of its Inhabitants—Pork and Physic. Fann Bennert,— Ailow me to give you “a peep at matters and things,” in this Cis-Alleghanian metropolis,in these times of ups and downs, changes, alterations, re~ volutions, novelties, wonders, sensations, and ex- citements in this great and growing world of ours. Cincinnati, with the rest of the empire, is moving onward to celebrity, in population, wealth, and prosperity. The past season has been one of great addition to her, in every sense of the term. It judged by those who are rauked among her know: ing ones in such matiers, that she contains from eight to nine thousand more inhabitaots than she did on the first of January of the current year, and those are of permanent householders and their ta- milies. There have been about 1,700 buildings erected here since the first of March last (and at this date scarce a vacant tenement can be found in the corporation, the major part of which are edi- fices of the first order, built of brick and free stone, one of which deserves a passing notice. The en- terprising house of J. Strader & Co., (of mail steamboat notoriety,) have erected a cotton fac tory and calico printing establishment, on Third street, near the corner of Elm; which, together with 18 eppendages, is a most magnificent aflair. [tis of brick, five stories high, two hundred feet by one hundred, propelled by steam power; and when its peculiarly favorable local advantages, their remarkuble facilities for procuring the raw materials, &c., are taken into consideration, it is believed that its enterprising proprietors will be enabled to compete successfully with ‘those won- der-working establishments of the kind in the eastern region of the Union. Business here is on her high-heeled shoes in every department of life ; from the Datch wood sawyer, who pockets his dol- lar and a halt for his day’s toil, to the mammoth pork packer, who despatches his 8000 lusty porkers per week. Speakicg of pork packing, allow me to say that the season is now considered but two-thirds over; and there have already been slaughtered here be- tween 175,000 and 200,000 sturdy grunters. Rivers of lard ot! are being rendered daily, while sides, shoulders, and hems are piled here and there like little mountains. Verily,is not our Queen city richly entitled to the significant appellation of * Porko- polis. The political cauldon here, as everywhere else, has ceased to boil. The cock and the coon, those political leviathans, whoee late deadly strug- gles and grapples for ascendancy were such as to make the empire quake and reel {tom centre to circumierénce, have now become so docile and fraternal trom mutual exhaustion. that they lie coolly down together; and itis thought that a | tle ohile may with safety venture to lead them; and there is a little urchin hereabouts, christened “*Native American,” who is now actually ven- turing to fasten his tiny reins upon the monsters; and intends, when he comes to the years of discre- tion, to dispatch the wretches ! And, friend Bennett, believe me when I tell you thacthe Herald, during the canvass of the charter election last spring in the city of New York, did more to give spitit to this same little “Native American” than every other journal in the Union. The Herald told him ** he could suceced” by fol- lowing its directions in that city, and he did euc- ceed ; and it gave a confidence, energy, and ac- tivity to the litte fellow, which, we think herea- bouts, is destined to speed him on, conquering and to cocquer, until he reigns lord of the ascendant. [frequently hear him, now-a-days, crying in the streets, ** Oh! that I could get Bennett of the He- raid, to enlist in my cause; for I should consider it tantamount to a guaranty of sucerss” He hae iwo jonroals in this city, enthusiastically engaged in his favor, and they are werking wonders emong the natives; but he thivks they lack Bennett’s two edged sword aud sledge hammer, to do the work efficiently. Another little matter of interest in this city at this time, is a deep toned feeling that exists among the ecclesiastical departments of the church. Both Protestants and Catholics, are struggling for, and claiming the ascendancy in numbers and in- fluence. Much high toned comment is made on both sides; and both sides are telling their tales to the world, through the medium of the press. But there can be no question, but what his holiness the Pope can number, in real devout fol- lowers, two to. one over all other creeds combin- ed; having, as is estimated, at least 20,000 devoted followers, 1m & population’ of 75.000 or 80,000 in this city. The religious thermometer ranges high; and some are making unfavorable predictions as to the result. And this, too,is a sin hung upon the horns of the Herald, in consequence of the late hostilities between Bennett and that redoubtable political divine, Bishop Hughes. So you see the Herald must be precedent, inasmuch as it is taken, as a kind of religious and etre) text book, through the length and breadth, highth and depth, of this excitable empire. Our literary and scienti- fic institutions are in an uncommon flourishing condition The Cincinnati and the Woodard Colleges, have fine classes, numbering something tike three hundred each at present, both onducted -by hi talented, competent and sonia es he ay ollege, situated in this city, hasreached an enviable niche among the Escu/apian schools ef the Union. The indefatigable exertions of itsable and popular facul ty, have rendered the facilities for acquiring a medi- cal education so full and desirable, thet students are resorting here from all sections of the Union west of the mountains. The class at present in at- tendance numbers between two and three hundred, all highly delighted with the fatherly attentions ot the professors, and the admirable advantages ren- dered them to become familiar with the healing art. The Henly talented and cel brated Professor of Chemistry, John Igock, is deservedly esteemed the master spirit of the institution, Truly, yours, . D.V. B. San Juan Bautista De Puerto Rico.—Papers upto the 20th ultimo, from San Juan Bautista de Puerto Rico, (commonly called Porto Rico,) in- form us that some important changes have taken place very recently in the Custom House regula- tions there, especially with regard to the exporta- tion of cattle, in which, as our readers are aware, that island abounds. These new regulations ap- pear to be part of a system of measures originated by the Count Mirasol, (the Captain General,) in an enlightened and promising effort to promote the prosperity of theisland, and at the same time, as tending to that end, to protect and advance the i terests of foreign commerce. And it is really a subject of congratulation to our ancient ally Spain, as well as to those Cel be ey in commercial inter- course with this island, that two functionaries ex- ercising such large powers as do the Captain Gene- raland the Intendant, should have set so earnestly to work in so important a field as that of the Cus- tom House, both as to the imposition of duties and the practical administration of the laws. e have thought it not uninteresting to the com- mercial public, to sudjoin an abstract of two of these regulations promulgated the 2d ultimo.— They are as follows:— 1 Fromond after the 19th of the present month of Ni vember, the exportation of cattle from this island shall be free from every species of duties. 2. Agents, whether nationol subjects or foreigners, for the purchase of cattle, shell receive their passports gratis from the euthorities of the island, to traverse such parte as may be convenient for them forthe purpose of makin; their contracts ; andthey shall have every facility ‘and every protectfon which they may solicit from the govern- ment, and which may be within its competency with re- spect to the laws. 3. Vers ls Lyle 3 in ballast, for the exportation of cattle, though they be foreign vessels, will understend that a are dispensed from the obligation of bi ing con- signed. 7, The first two steam vessels which shell establish themselves for the exportation of cattle, shall for the term of five years be free from tonnage duties, port duty, health duty, aud all other duties now levied ; and this although upon their return voyages they import articles of commerce. 5. From and after the 19th¥November (ultimo) the Cus tom Houses of the second class shall have power to grant clearances beyond their respective districts, and all other powers proper to custom houses of the first class, from which they will be distingnished only by the number of their officers, Sgriovs Accipent.—The shop of Mr. Mills, gunsmith, at the upper end of town, had been fre- quently entered by burglars during the fod on Saturday night last he prepared a pi when the door wos opened it would shoot ¢ He was. himself, thoughtlessly, the first one to enter, and the contents of the pistol were lodged in hischist. Dayton. [Correspondence of the Herald } Dayton, Ohio, Dec. 5, 1844. Canals.— Rivers —-Lots—-Society—-Amusements — Ladies. As one of your constant readers, I have been greatly interested by the letters of your numerous correspondents. Scarcely a hamlet, or village, or city, is there in the country, but we occasionally hear from through your valuable paper, and | have frequently thought this flourishing little city of Dayton, with its beautiful mansions, its broad and spacious streets, its busy workshops, its extensive manufactories, certainly deserved at least, a pass- ing notice, 10 the New York Herald. It is empha- tically a go ahead place. A few years ago, its lo- cality was a wild swamp with a few straggling houses on the bank of the Miami River; some of these still stand, but are entirely thrown into the shade by the stately residences of the wealthy ci- tizens near them. The Miami and Mad rivers then rushed along in al! their primitive beauty and wildness; now the course of the latter, in one place, is obstructed by dams to bring the water into the city for hydraulic purposes, and, in another, an entirely new channel has been cut, to throw it further off to give us room to extend our building lots, and to spread ourselves. To give you anything like an accurate descrip- tion of Dayton would Our too much space and time, and I must speak of the cemetery, of the proposed hydraulic canal, and many other objects of interest here, at some future ume. Our society is most excellent, and will not suffer by comparison with that of any other city west of the Alleghanies. The ladies unite the haut ton of the east with the charming natvete of the west, and form a character which cannot but please the most fastidious They are refined and elegant, possessing that air distingué which usually accom- panies personal appearance most attractive, and accomplishments most fashionable. The gaiety of the winter has commenced—cotillion parties,ta- bleauxvivants, and chess partiesare to be the resourc- esfor amusement. By the way,Imust give you an ac- countot the tableaux which recently came off at the residence of Mr. B._ His beautilul and accom- plished daughters, assisted by their fair associates, ‘got this up” with a degree of elegance and taste [never saw surpassed. The representations were a love scene—a Neapolitan girl asleep—three scenes from Byron’s Corsair—Auld Robin Gray— an Indian group, and two scenes from the Bride ef Abydos, In the love, scene appeared Miss N., as a gipsy, telling the fortunes of two lovers, persona- ted vy Miss C. B, and Mr. G. Judging trom ap- pearances, they were pleased with the revelations ot the fortune-teller; and, no doubt, the young gentleman would rather have had the thing in se- rious, solemn earnestness and truth, than a mere fiction. If he would not, he possesses less taste, and less fondness for the beautiful and worthy, than I have heretofore given him credit for. The Neapolitan girl was personated by Miss F, and most excellently done. The scenes of the Corsair, by Miss W. and Mr. V., and rather better per- formed, if possible, than the previous ones; Auld Robin Gray, by Mrs. D., Mrs. P, Mr. P—and Mr. P. This was, indeed, a fine scene, and the spectators requested a second view, which was given, although rather contrary to the wishes of Mr. V—nC., the manager, who is, truly, a gentle- man of fine taste, and understands these things. The Indian Group was represented by Miss F. and Mr. B. Their perfect costumes and natural posi- tions, formed a most faithful picture of a warrior reposing after the fatigues of the battle field, and his equaw looking down upon him with affection expressed in her every feature. But now shall I speak of the ‘ Bride of Abydos.” Byron himself, when writing, never imagined be- ings more lovely than Miss M. and Mise H. B., the characters in these scenes. The former re chning in the most graceful position, casting her soft gazelle-like eyes upwards to her lover, and of- fering to him a flower, was a most accurate repre- sentation of an Eastern beauty. Beautiful, at all times, ig she ; but when that look of undying affec- tion is depicted upon her features, who could re- tuse to pay homage to one so graceful and elegant. Happy, thrice happy, will that man be, on whom the lignt of those eyes will shine, and who can tS ape herand say ‘‘ She is mine own, my loved one Pleased as 1 was with ths affair, and dwelling as it does upon my memory, forgive me, my dear sir, if | have been too prolix. All those present, and they were many, appeared equally gratified with myself. Bridgeport. {Correspondence of the lierald ] Bripveerort, Dec. 20, 1844. Elder Knapp again in the Field, and Fanning the Dying Embers, and Blowing Gas for the Amuse- ment of the People—Scraps and Crumbs, &c. Dear Bennett— Ours is a glorious little city—a city in which the immortal Thomas Thumb first breathed the breath of life—a city in which General Thomar Edwards, and his son Alfred, resides—a city of City Bonds, of repudiation and of liquidation. But why need we speak of its glorious character—it is known to all. The great political race is run—its excitement ended for a season; hardly over, however, before the great master-spirit of souls—Brother Knapp— descends from the clouds, armed and equipped os the law direets—the sword of righteousness hang- ing by his side—streaks of saivation running up and down his legs—his pockets crammed full of phials of wrath—his tall, military hat jammed full of ——good sense, and plumes, plucked from the wings of angel Crabriel, waving o’er his benight- ened brow, as the hydro. oxygen ascends. Steam cocks and steam pipes are blowing and snorting— high pressure engines are ‘‘ goin’ it” with the velo- city of torked lightning—cog wheels and blowers are whirling round, bigest f like ten thousand swarms of complicated bumble bees—the wheels of sin are groaning and echoing “ pit-pat, pit-pat” under the inhuman and driving propensities of the infuriated engine—blue streams of fire emanate from the smoke pipe of salvation—Lehigh and Lackawana coal feed the devouring furnaces— the boilers of salvation stand the test—on dashes the New Jerusalem steamboat, ploughing the pol- luted waters over the deck at every jump. Hold! a sinner is washed on the quarter deek—breathe the Holy Ghost in his nostrils. Hark! his bosom heaves—he whispers glory !—louder he says glory ! —peals of thunder echoglory! Run up the flaes —set Zion on the bow—Salvation on the stern, and Glory, hullelujah, on the quarter deck. Ho! the thraldom of sin is in sight. Bridgeport is in view—beat the drums—fire the guas—we’ll take the repudiators by storm—they discover us—the shake—they bend their jointless knees—down wit the anchor of the crose—no, up with it, we'll dash o’er the mud flats of sin, and moor the New .'eru- salem in Jehovah’s dock. Blow off the steam— throw some brimstone in the furnace. Oh, look here! Look where? Look way over yonder— see the penitent sinners~-see their legs quiver— see them fall on their knees. Stull they com still they fall—make room-huddle up together— hear the cries—glory, glory ! Our work is done—we have taken the rookery by storm. To fight against the steamer New Jerusalem and its captain, is folly, when sinners conquer the old ship Zion, then they may storm the ramparts of heaven and hurl Jehovah Tite hie throne—then, and not till then. Dear Bennett, the above isa specimen, and I shall prebab!y give you some more ere long. I find, as the Elder advances, he fires into it con siderably strong, and | should not be surprised if he should kick up a considerable of a spree, be- cause he says he shall stick to it until the devil hands over the papers. When this scene comes off 1 shall probably be present, say next weck, er after, becauee [have a great curiosity to behold that sage egetey od When he does come J shall try to make arrangements with him and send him to the American Museum, because he will be capi- tal property for my friend Barnum, and, more than all, I wish to have our city proverly, and faithful represented in the persons of Gen.
