The Government banks of the three cities have been drawn upon within the past month, for more than a million anda halfof dollars. The bauk of America has suffered the heaviest drafts, but so far the effect has been confined to stocks.— These government hanks anticipate! a much heavier draft, and held themselves in readiness to meet any de- mand the Secretery of the Treasury might make. Tobe prepared for any drain that might come, these institu. tions were compelled to draw in nearly every loan out- standing on stocks, and to refuse {urther loans on se- curity. It ia possible the Treasury Departmen’ may moke further drafts on these banks, and until it is pretty well known that the deposits may rest where they now are, the money market must be sensibly affected. It would be better for this market, were evi ry dollar of the government deposits removed from our banks So long as the government funds are used by the banks to sfford fa- cilities to speculators, &c., it will be impossible to main’ tain any regularity in money and commercial matters. Daan Sin—The members are very busy settling themselves; the presiding officer of each House is doubtless engaged in the revision of the commit tees. We expect no material alterationsin the Senate. If there were no other reason, the short+ ness of the session, and the comparative monotony of the regular routine of business, would be suffi- cient to justify this impression. We anticipate a quiet, ordinary session, in which no extraordinary measure will be passed, whether regarding Texas, Oregon, the Post Office, or the Tariff. These ean will remain, we opine, i in statu que. Perhaps we may have a resolution noti- fying reat Britarn, of the dissolution of the treaty of oF Jouue occupation—perhaps not. A stupor seems ave fallen over Congrese—an indecision on the eae: of the House from the known hostility of the Senate, and a thorper on the Senate which threat- ens a seven year’s sleep. Mr. R. Owen, (father of R. D. Owen, of the House,) who has been living for some time in In- diana, 13 now in this city, and propose: urse of lectures on his very peculiar plan of re-organiza- tion of the social system. The present system as established at Wasnington, seems to give general salistaction to all parties, whether single ori the bond: matrimony. Society has adapted itself, ‘uke the self-regulating laws of trade, toevery case, ao matter how pecniiar. We don’t waut Mr. Owen to upset, anyhow, uutil the Natives have the reins of government, [1 will be ume enough then. Our colleague, we believe, with several other gentlemen, has gone out afier the canvass Receee Dined at the United States Hotel to-day, which the Hera/d, the editor of the Herald, the enterprise ot the Herald, and the corps on outy of the Herald, were wasted.
