Indeed, the men of the North, in other branches of trade and business, are creating quite a reaction in the South. Orlan- do Fish & Co., of your city, have introduced quite a rivalry among the hat and fashionable nicknack- ery storesof Washington. Mr. Stevens, agent of Mr. Fish here, desires the measure of your head for a premium hat, as a specimen in their line.— We have won a hat in the election, and are inde- pendent. In Virginia, the New York colonists are rapidly reviving the “agriculture of the poorest, worn out lands, of the most impoverished counties—it is only necessary to mention Fairfax asan example. The question ot the andexation of Texas will lead to a most spirited and comprehensive re-agitation of the whale sub- ject in the Senate. ‘The people, in the election of Polk, being considered as having expressed their assent to the nuptialization between the two couo- tries, the friends of the late treaty in the Senate, it isthought, will call up that precise project again for reconsideration in the form of a bill. We ex- pect not. A bill, probably, will be introduced in the House, with various important modifications of the Tyler hee but will it be passed at the present session. 0, sir; it will be reserved for the signature of the next President, and for the more deliberate action of the first. long or extra session of the incoming administration. The friends of Oregon will not be idle. A vigo- rous effort on the part of the Hooshiers, the Suck. ers, the Wolverives, the Pukes and the men of Arkansas will be made for that fine territory. The wagon-road discovered through the Rocky Moun- tains last summer Has given a new impulse to emi- gration, and it is predicted that with the protection of our Government accorded them, thousands of movers would shove out to Oregon next Spring. Nor should we be surprised if a proposition were set afoot for the exchange of California for certain unredeemed Mexican indemnities, in part pay- ment. It would be agood hit. California is a finer country than Oregon—has a better climate and Mexico will never do any thing with it as long as she elects her President at the point of the bayonet. Let us enlarge the boundaries of freedom. Members are arriving slowly. Board is dear in ‘Washington, and the gentlemen of the two Houses are generally prudent and economical men in their private expenditures. The great democratic jubilee, several times post- poued, will now come off positively on Wednes- day, the 27th, if fair. Toreh- light, transparencies and an illumination in the evening. Bor. Seriovs Accrpent.—While the workmen were engaged in removing the massive arches stone steps froma the southeastern wing of the Exchange buildings, front- ing-on Lombard strest, it appears that the workmen were engaged in taking down the arch, when it suddenly gave way, and Mr. Kobert Oram, of Schroeder street, was nearly covered by the heavy material of which it’ was composed. He was speedily extricated, and taken into the Exchange Hotel, where upon examination it was found that his right thigh had been most dreadfully shat- tered, and his arm broken near the shoulder.
