MONEY MARKET. Monday, Nov. 25—6 P. M1. The stock market to-day was slightly depressed, but not to the extent anticipated. Farmera’ Loan fell off j per cent; Pennsylvania 5's 14; Illinois 4; Norwich & Wor- cester 2; Stonington 1}; Long Island 1}; Morris Canal 3; Mohawk 1; Erie Railroad advanced 1 per cent; East Bos- ton }. The sales were toa very limited extent. The market is ina state ready to be effected by the slightest political movement or change in financial affairs, and we have no doubt but that something will turn upina few days that will have a very unfavorable effect on the market. At this moment there is a greater probability that quotations will be lower before they ere highex, two, as the recent break down in prices has taught many operators a lesson, and they feel more disposed to awsit the result of auy thing’ likely to affect the market, than to anticipate it. Counterfeit notes of the denomination of $2, on the Uaion Bank of Delaware, are in circulation. Counterteit 1’s on the Bank of Rome, are in circulation in! °einterior of this State. The counterfeit isa very p>» imitation—paper bad, and the execution miserable ; dated Oct. 19, 1842, signed by John Stryker, president ; John Wood, coshier, and countersigned J Crowell, regis ter—the latter signature no imitation at all. ‘rhe Gas Light Company of Baltimore has declared a half yearly dividend of 3 per cent. ‘The Bartlett mills have made a semi-annual dividend of 3 percent. They have reserved 3 per cent to add to their surplus fund, which is stated now to amount to $34,000, or about ten per cent on the capital. The Directors of the Bank of Augusta have declared a dividend of twe dollars and fifty cents per share on the capital stock of that institution. The: very little doing in} domestic exchanges, ond sterling bills are in very limited demand. It is supposed therates for the next steamer will not rule oyor 9] a 10 per cent, unless the demand should be much greater than antici ated. Business at this moment is rather inactive, and during the existing state of the market, it cannot be expected that domestic bills will be much enquired after. "y the finances of the State of A’konsas, by the governor, we should think that State was in a fair way of taking a place alongside of IUinois, Indiana, &c. as a delinquent State, and alongside of Mississippi asa repudiating S:ate. ‘The governor says that the State treasury is not in a con- dition to pay off the interest which has already accrued o1the State bonds. The total amount of undisputed in- terest on State honda, due and unpaid, upto the Ist Oc- tober last, was $504,507 69. The mesgage goes on to say that the citizens of the State ore already oppressed by texation to meet the expenses of the government. The governor is not prepared to recommend an increased taxa- tion {or the purpose of meeting the interest on the State bonds, bnt propoces that prompt and energetic measures should be adopted, with the means and assets of the banks, ischarge the interest upon all such bonds as have been sold in good faith and im strict accordonce with the bank cherters, In alluding to the banking move. ments of the State, the messeye atates that the amount of notes issued by the State bank and branches, outstanding onthe 26th day of October last, after deducting the amount already burned, and the amount on hand to be cancelled and burnt, was $172,355. Towards the redemp- tion of this sum, there are already in the vaults of the principal bank $128,000, in the notes of the real estate bank und branches, to which may be added the amount of notes collected by the receivers of the different branches since their last returns. According to the report of the auditor of public accounts, the whole amount of the issues of the real estate bank and branches, is $954, 651. The amount redeemed end burned, up to the 30th of September last, ie $384 739, and there are in the vanits ofthe principal bank, ready to be burned, $182,620. — ‘This leaves $297 $04 of the total issue outstanding, part of which has been received atthe different branches since the last of April, of no returns have been mae. 1. i, with much satisfaction we find that the subscy ip- tions to the Erie railroad are progressing with great ra- pidity, end of such a character as to inspire the most per- fect confidence that this important work will be pressed forward without delay. On one subscription book we have seen about two end fifty thousand dollars, while otbers, under the superintendence ofthe several direc- tore, are circulating with still greater success. As we have heretofore remarked, the value and the prospects of the Erie railroad, when properly understood, could rot fail to Command public confilence, and we bave now the gratification to perceive that there expectations are to be inlly realized. ‘The subscription books will be publicly opened on Tuesday, (to morrow,) and continue until the lost of the month, when the two millions will poseibly be taken, in the event of which, we have ro donbt the stock will be as much sought for as it has been heretofore neglected.
