Text.—''Let us go on, then, to perfection.”— St. Peul. Gan. James G. Bennett :— Society in Washington may be cut up into six divisions, to wit:—The hards and the softe—the sharps and the flats—the ins and the outs. The great distinction of aristocratic society in other places, namely, wealth, does not here exist. True, we have aristocrats and plebeians, but they are all poor, all proud, and a preponderating majority de- cidedly lazy, in our most humble judgment. The offices in the several departments and ut the capitol have spread their baleful contagion of office habits, office mania and office supremacy throughout the place. Dress, display, idlenees, politics and dissi- pation are predominant, and the combined efforts of all the churches in the e1ty are insufficient to expel, even for the Sabbath, “the roaring lion, who gees about seeking whom he may devour.” He is rather “under cow,” of course, on the Lord’s day, but in the evening and for the residue of the week he promenades the avenue with the dignity and self-conceit of a deputy eonstable. We are speaking of the devil, dear reader, the patron ea: of be federal metropolis, as you will concede him tobe. _We deserve oredit for onr institutions of reli- gion, benevolence, education, science, and the fine arts. We deserve a better fate than Sodom and Gomorrah, for there is quite a large minority of righteous people among us; but we do predict that, if the capital is not removed farther inte the interior, before another century, foreign manners, follies, and fandangoes, in conjunction with the devil, will take possession of the place, formally and absolutely. Idieness, luxury, poverty, pride and manworship, corruption, an hypocrisy, pati tution, crime, rankling licentiousness am dissipa- tion, will run riot over the city of the Government. But by a mighty effort, and the blessing of Hee these evils may be evaded. Instead of being at continual log erhes upon quibbles of church doctrine, and lop-sided interpretations of the Scrip- tures; instead of bowtie at the footstool of fash- ton, and worshipping the golden calf for filthy luere, let our ministers unite as one man im the «reat work of reformation; moral, religious and so- cial reformation. Letthem cry aloud and spare not, 1 the ungodly in high places, as wellas the loafers of Frogtown, shall exclaim, “Men and brethren, what shall we doto be saved?” In unity there is power—without it nothing can be done.— The fathers of the corporation have since our ab- sence last summer, made an incipient§premonitory ¢ symptom of moral reform—the closing of the me- tropolitan grog-shops onthe Sabbath. The con- gregations of free negroes are dispersed from the street corners—the white-alley boys, the rangers, the leather taces, are broken up or disorganized by this wise enactment. The veto of the Fiscal Ban Bill in ’41 resulted in another law beneficial to the nocturnal peace of the city—for the outrages com- mitted on the night of that splendid veto near the President’s House, led to the immediate passage of an act establishing a night police, since which time comparative order has been maintained. President Tyler and his amiable and hospitable family have done much in giving a healthful tone to the morals and manners of this people. They deserve all thanks for it. They have diffused a liberality of feeling—a frankness of conversation— a republican simplicity of conduct—a regard for the outside qualities of the man, independent of the trappings of the tailor. In the winter levees at the White House, in the summer evening concerts in the President’s gardens and at the Capitol, the principles, the acquisitions, and the politenesses of good taste, good teeling, good sense, with a little Uneture of tashionable foily, have been much ex- tended among the citizens and throughout the re- public. We like old John and his amiable and intelligent family for it—we like ’em very much.° Literature has also been promoted through the administration of Mr. Tyler. The poems of the oun repealer af Thomee, of. Tuct, and one! have reinstated the literary corps to their origi and legitimate place in the dresscirele.’ All honor, therefore, to the administration of John Tyler, for its local influences of moral reform and literary: promotion. ’ But a new era is dawning upon us—a new era, general, in the work of moral, social, civil, and re- ligiou: rogress.”” We look with lively interest, with much hope, and apostolic faith, to the ad of the Polk family into the White House. PI unostentations, approachable to all, and practising the humble virtues of truth, religion and simplicity at head quarters, they cannot fail to disseminate the freshening atmosphere of social refinement and elevation all around them. From these paramount considerations, we regard the election of James K. Polk asa great moral triumph—a triumph ot the vital principles of Christianity over the chivalric and knightly barbarism of the feudal ages. Str, there is a mighty power evolving itself in the hu- man mind. It is superior to political mangement, and will control the popular will. What 1s this power—whence is it derived—whether is it tend- ing? Itis the power ot truth, moral, civil, social, religious, political, primitive, elementary truth—it ig derived frem the progress of the human mind— from the diffusion of knowledge, and the advance- ment and developement of human rights. It is tending to the revolutionizing of the whole social tabric of civilization. The consummation is ap- proaching; we may live, you and I, beloved reader, to witness the effulgence ot its dawning. But in theee rhapsodies, | am absorbing too much space, perhaps, at a single reading. Knowing, however, General Bennett, that the Herald hae, as a primary and ultimate object, the exte in of the principles of an enlightened and liberal christiani- ty, over the land and over the world, we re felt free in their discussion at large. We believe, Mr. Editor, that while you hold in great contempt the shad-betlied hypocrite—the long faced pharisee, and the hawk-biled lsraelite, whose only ambiti: is to speculate in old clo’—that you have, ‘as have, a firm, tle consoling, and paramoun regard for a genuine Simon Pure Gentile, or ai raelite, who ecorns to sella Perebreasteis foradia- mond. Our remarke, we believe, will do much good Our religious flocks and shepherdshere are going to sleep; and we want to open their eyes, their ears, and their sober judgment. Emerging from this moral homily, what else have we t y Upon matters and things in general, upon the “sayings and doings” in the Federal city? Of- fices and office-holders are the current subjects of hotel conversation and private arrangement. What an enervating influence these office: ve upon the moral independenee of the holders—what mere creatures of cireumstance they are made in the fluctuations of party ascendancy!
