Thomas—The Old H.rricoon, ‘The Coon Cabin, &¢ , &. Gan. J. G. Bewnurr:— There 1s nothing here to live on but speculation, for the present. The new administration—the component merits of the Cabinet—the “ine” that are to be turned out, and the ‘‘outs” that are to be turned in, make up the hotel conversations of Washington just now. The undercurrent of social slang and claptrap, though interesting to a clase, is beyond our comprehension and taste. In the'pri- vate affairs of no man do we desire to dabble, nor do we hg the smallest curiosity to be informed thereof, IfF W. Thomas desires to be informed whether we can write better poetry than the Beechen Tree, we give him the following original specimen in re- ply :— We jing you now a Loco song, made by a Foco pate, Of an old Kentucky Harricoon who a fin And mae or ag niggers “ fat and sleek,’ at an, And any fens “can tell his name, his luek and futare ‘That torice defeated candidate all of the olden time. The coons held their last meeting for good at the Clay Club House last night. _ They had a blaze outside like a camp-fire, and lights inside, which made the shanty as brilliant a tobacco-house when the fires are lit of a rainy evening. They. banged away with aflitde owivel,hall-hour guns of Jameutation and distress; and within the shaxt there was a party of sorrowful men which wealk have made Job ashamed of himself, even while scraping his bones with an oyster-shell, for truly may these coons exclaim, “ Our sufferings is in- tolerable.” Judge Tyopan, one of the U. 8, Senators from Ohio, arrived in town last night. The Judge looks quite pert and lively. Bos. Wasuinaton, Nov. 19, 1844. Chit Chat and Chowder. Dear Bennerr:—The session of Congress draws nigh. The excitement attendant on the election, and the triumph, has measurably subsided, and all eyes are now again turned to the future. The at- tention of the public is absorbed in surmises as to the character of the message of the President, and the reports of the various heads of Departments, and the several officials are busily occupied in the pre- paration of these important documents. The light will not long be hidden under a bushel. The curi- osity of the quidmincs, and the hopes, fears, and douts of all concerned, will soon be relieved. . The members ot Congress are graduaily drop- ping in. The result of the election must have a prodigious effect upon the Old House; a tendency to soften prejudice, start sober enquiry, and com- pel acquiescence in expressed public opinion. In the South, the election is admitted to have turned upon the Annexation of Texas, and the members from that section who opposed the Treaty, will now feel themselves constrained to obey the voice of the electors. Be not parpeisad to see Texas an- nexed before the first of February. The Tariff will be acrimonieusly discussed, and perhaps somewhat modified. The South has become irritable under the long continued low price of cotton, and the Treasury is overflowing. The national finances will aflord another fruittul subject of debate. What will Chanceller Bibb say? Give us the Exche- quer! Let him: it was certainly the wisest, safest, and most conservative system ever conceived. The election of Mr. Polk is viewed asa com- plete vindicatien of the Administration. The Pre- sideot, Cabinet, and subordinater, are in the most exulting mood ; rubbing their hands with glee, and cracking their sides with laughter. The fashionable world will reap the natural fruit of this unbounded joy. Had Mr. Clay been chosen by the people, gloom would have pervaded the social metropolis. Now, preparations are in progress to make this the most brilliant season that Washington has ever beheld. A round of magnificent entertainmeni:, commencing with the opening of Congress, wil! f :|- low one another in rapid euccession, ending the Inauguration Ball, a grand finale! _ : At stated periods the executive mansion will be thrown open under the auspices ot the President’s bride, the most splendid and aecomplished lady of the age. Possessed of the highest order of beauty and intellect, and of the most elegent and popular manners, she will draw about her # court circle rivalling in charms of mind and pereon, that of Charles (1. or Louis le Grand. The east room, illuminated by a thousand lights, a thousand times reflected in i's capacious mirrors, the various ception and dr: roome thronged with great statesmen, ambassadors, attach officers of the navy and army, and, more than all, with unequalled female loveliness in splendid attire—could there be amore dazzling by nad tana In the intervals, the members of the cal all accomplished gentle- men, learned in the affairs n at home and abroad, surrounded 44 captivating families, moet of whom have “travelled far and seen much,” will entertain the favored at numerous dinners, parties and balls The legislative branch of the govern- ment will come, also, to the rescue, and the mem- bers of Congress, the democratic portion being, of course, under present circumstances, most active, will produce a series of assemblies never eurpase- ed. Ihave scribbled to the end of tt per, and now dear Bennett, adieu. You shall hear again from D. MoR. Unirep States Hore, Washington City, Nev. 19, 1844. Great Times—Democratic Celebration— Rumora— President Polk— Changes — Early Marriages— Annexation necessary in cold weather Dear Genera :—The great democratic jubilee comes off on Monday the 25th inet. Orations, mu- sic, processions, illuminations, bonfires, brandy and water, ground and iy tumbling, make a rich, varied and interesting bill of jare. Citizens and strangers, democrats and whigs, are respectfully invited to be present on the joyous occasion. The democracy of the city and District have ex- pressed an united, earnest wish to have their bre- thren, one and all, whe feel an interest in the glo- rious termination of the Presidential contest, to be present. Truly, dear General, they have great cause for rejoicing. Their candidate has succeeded against the combined forces of nativism, coonism, whig- ism, pipeism, blackguardiem, and every other ism more formidable and terrible, then the invincible legion that conspired against Napoleon on the plains of Waterloo, and their defeat as awfal, and as overwhelming. President Polk will not, in all probability, visit Washingion before about the middle ot February, 1845, which will be soon enough for his whig friends here, unless they love him more than certain whig office holders in the Land Office. y Changes and removals are anticipated, but whether the President and the he of depart- ments will consider themselves justified in doing so, at se near the close of the administration, is donbtful. at John W.
