The Commissioners of this State have been obliged to borrow money to meet every payment of interest made, and they arenow in the city on business of that kind. At this rate Ohio must eventually become bankrupt. The change that has recently taken place in the political complexion of the legislature may, through an inflation in credits and ® change ot State policy, stave off a suspension for a while, but it appears at present impossible to prevent such a deplorable result. There was a steady increase in the movements of the banks upto 1637, and the imports of the year pre- vious were valued at $199,990,035, having in six years increased from seventy millions. and discounts cf the banks fell off forty millions of dollars, and the imports fell off twenty-seven millions.— In 1839, the bank loans increased and the imports forty-nine. In 1840, both the loans and imports fell off very largely ; the same in 1841 until we find in 1844, bank movement more limit than at any time since 1630, and an importation showing about the game decline. In proportion to the banking capital now in existence, our banks are under greater restrictions than they were in 1880. We have selected these two years to illustrate the similarity between the two periods more fully than our previous statements. The imports and exports for 1844 are partly estimated. We see that after a tremendous increase in every branch of business, that things have settled down nearly to the same point they were in 183) so far as our banking operations and foreign trade is con- cerned. Ourinternal commerce has, however, increased to an enormous extent, and the resources of the country have been extensively developed. The value of our im- ports or exports is no criterion of our prosperity, or increase in our nationel wealth. In fect, we are not so certain but that a falling off in both our importations and exportations denotes a greater internal prosperity. The population of the United States, in 1930, amounted to 12,866,920 souls ; in 1840 to 17,062,566, and in 1844 esti. mated at 19,000,000, and yet for this great increase, tor these seven millions more, we find an addit ‘onal importa tion of only twenty-four millions of dollars, ani the pro ductions exported are only valued at about one mil- lion more. Taking these facts into consideration, and the natural conclusion drawn from them would be, that the wealth and prosperity of the country was at the present time far below that of 1830, when, in fact, the reverse is the case. Under a restricted currency and a very contracted bank movement, prices become sufticiently reduced to shut out a large portion of fo- reign manufactures, and we enjoy the privilege of sup- plying ourselves. Prices of all descriptions of ‘merchan- dise are governed by three great thi mand-—the second supply, and the third the value of the currency. Dear Bennett :— Louisiana is safe. After one of the most ex citing elections I have ever witnessed here, the result gives the whige but 407 majority in this city, which they expected to carry by at least 1200 The utmost they can now get, including the votes of the 2d district, will be about 1300, The democrats will carry the State, it is now ad- mitted by the whig leaders, by about 1500 The first, third, and fourth districts, pane yee large democratic majonties. Dear Genera :— I write to congratulate you on the discovery by the whig editors, orators, and ministrels of the so- Jution to that universal interrogatory, “ Who is James K. Polk?” They are astounded, dumb- founded, and confounded. The office-holders are now decidedly democra- tic. A number of them were candidates last night for admission into the democratic aseociation. Poor fellows, let them be admitted—the very date of their baptism will be the warrant for their ex- pulsion. A grand concentrated democratic jubilaic mass eeeting will be held during the next week in town. eee. had a funeral gathering last night at iheirola b house. Nothing could exceed the g! joom, the despondency, “the green and yellow melan- choly”’ of the assemblage. But they have learned a hard lesson—a lesson of wisdom forages to come. We are sorry—heartily sorry for them—for there are many good men and true among them, who have bled to the last drop in “cleariog the track for old Kentucky.” Where is Mr. Webster to go now? Where Dr. Mayo? Where Col. Snethen? Where our Post- master Jones ? Blair & Rives are in the seventh heavea—John apse, however, continues bellicose id intract- able.
