MontHLy STaTEMENT oF THE TREASURER oF THE Uni- TED States. banks, is the disposition they may make of it to advance any speculation. Stock operators usually get accommoda- tions from; these institutions as they cannot make long loans on these deposits, and are compelled to confine their favors almost exclusively to the wants of speculators in securities, who can pay up at short notice. In this de- partment of speculation these pet banks must be very deeply engaged. The only check upon them, at present, is the demand, soon to come u, on them, for the payment of the public debt, falling due ‘January Ist, 1845, which amounts to $6,672,977, being $2,443,090 in six per cents, ‘and $3,213,792 in five anita half percentatock. A surplus must be left to the credit of the Secretary of the Treasury after paying the above amount, and the accumulation be- tween this and;the, time the next payment becomes due, July 1, 1853, of $7,000,000, at the rate realized for sometime past, must be immense, and if permitted to remain in the hands of those directing the pet banks, ihe result of the appropriations made of it, must be of the most ruinous nature, We cannot believe but that before a very great is allowed to accumulate, the government will adopt measures that will dispose of the surplus as ra. pidly as it accumulates, or prevent a further accumula, A change in the policy of the government, so far ‘a any reduction of the tariff is concerned, might reduce the revenue to the expenditures, which would answer ull the purposes required for atime, but when the next instalment on the public debt becomes due, another change might be necessery in the tariff to produce suffi. siet revenue to meet the payment. Judging from pre- sent indications, it does not, however, appear Pro- oable that the present tariff will undergo many al- terations or modifications, until a surplus: evenue, large enough to pay the public debt, has accumulated, Old Stock Exchange. 3 106 25 shas I, Island RR 4500 Ohio 66, 770 102% 775 do 102" 200 do TMiinotsapel bie 3100 do 3000 [Nin is 2000 Heading RR bds 72) 30 do 2000 do. 11% 50 do 100 Texas ‘Tr notes sm = do 100 has Phenix Bk 1 50 Karmers’ Trust 13 Go Sroalpeton RR % do snw 42130 lo 90 do 2 50 © do % do 41% 50 de i 50 do do 25) jk uh do 25 US Bank 7% 50 Nor & Wore RR 3 Merch's Exe Co B25 lo a Morris Canal 3 0 do 5 Canton Co 6 50 do 30 Go 45, 400 9 do 44% 100 lo 30 do dite 110 Erie RR i3 3 4ahe 3 3 (00 % b30 46 450 Harlem RR 40 Reading RR 1a : 00 do btw 534 100 F Boston Co seri 100 do #10 53 do (00 do 53 100 do Second Board. 10000 Ohjo 6's 102 100 shas Morris Canal B shas 5 jor ‘ ‘ore | ‘ to ‘ae lo 4 * Readi “RR i Jauton Co & ston Canal iy aan rer There has been very little change of moment in these ten banks, when we take into censideration the immense amount of their operations. Dem. maj. 1,808 1,229 Democratic gain in 45 counties, 574 Philadelphia (Corresponden-e of the Herald } Puttapetruta, Nov. 8, 1844. The returns from the counties in the interior of this State still show an increased gain for the demo- cratic candidates. The result of the election as far as Pennsylvania is concerned, is now fairly settled—the choice of the people has fallen on Polk and Dallas. The only question now is, what will be the majority. Many think it will be upwards of 10,000, while others are of opinion that it will not be half that number. There is an increased democratic gain se far, of nearly 8,000 over Shunk’s majority at the October election. This would give a majority of 7000, provided the remaining counties poll the same number of votes they did in October. There are 17 counties still to hear from, 14 of which are Democratic, and 3 Whig. The Democrats celebrated their victory to-day by firing a salute of 100 guns. The November term of the Court of Oyer and Terminer and Quarter Sessions commenced to-day. Judge Parsons, the Presiding unin of the term, charged the Grand Jury. Riots election frauds were the principal topics adverted to by his Honor in his charge. The proprietors of the Tribwne, of your city, and the U. S. Gazette and Ledger, of Philadelphia, ran an express trom Alleghany on Sunday, with the election returns. If this was done to affect the New York election, which it is thought it was, the gen- lemen had.sheiderer forAbsi” WRG died at the Hospital last night, of injuries received by being run over on the Frankford railroad.
