The operations both in the Boards and in the street, were very limited, very few are disposed to do much during the existing state of commercial and money matters. ‘The financial affairs of the Western Railroad Company must be rapidly improving, judging from the returns made weekly. The receipts up to the 24th of August in 1843 and 1844 have been as follows :— Western Raitnoap. 1843, 1844, Receipts from Jan. latto Aug. 17th, 318,834 418,305 Week ending Aug. 24th. ...ecs.0e06 18,764 21/247 Total to August 24th.... .... $832,148 $440,642 For the week ending the 24th inst. the receipts for pas- sengers were $4,274,and from freight $3,209 more than for the same week in 1643, showing for the week an increase of $7,483. Allthe railroads of the country appear to be in a very prosperous condition. The railroads of Great Britain have, within the last two years, increased in pro. ductiveness, very much, and the stocks of several have advanced very rapidly. The Bristol and Exeter has ad vanced from £35 to £78 per share; Birmingham and * Gloucester, £41 to £112; North Midlands, £56 to £108; Manchester and Leeds, £58 to £116; Sheffield and Manchester, £30 to £85; Birmingham and Derby, £37 to £84; Midland Counties, £59 to £108; Manchester and Birmingham,) £19 to £56. In Great Britain a railroad stock paying four per cent is at par, and rises nearly 160 per cent for every addition- al four per cent which it pays. A stock paying ten per cent commands £230 for £100 invested. The railroads of this country cannot, for many years, reach the same degree of productiveness of the English railroads. The dense population of Great Britain, and the immense amount of the internal commerce of the country, swells the income of rouds in that country to an enormous amount, so that notwithstanding the very great outlay in construction, many roads pay more than ten per cent annual dividends. The nett income yielded by 1596 miles of railroad, in operation in Great Britain in 1843, con- structed at the enormous cost of £56,135,100 sterling, or about $290,000 000. Yet with this extravagant outlay of capital, we find the average nett receipts for 1843, exceed 5 per cent :— “ The receipts from passengers were. . . Do from merchandise and maili £4,927 655 The expenses, .-. 4.06 cesecsescesseeeee ces 1,931,062 Nett receipts, sterling. .... 66.4. « £2,896,593 Of the abeve fifty-six millions of pounds sterling, £4, 990,000 was expended in 1843, towards completing seve ral works commenced, while only 66 miles were added to the system during that year. That some idea may be formed of the immense expenditure on English railways compared with American, it is sufficient to state that the former cost, on on average, (single with double tracks.) £35,874, or $176,000 per mile; while the latter, fora sin- gle track, and equal in extent to 5000 miles, cost $20,000 per mile, or £4000 sterling; a sum not equal, by $15,000, to the average cost of right of way and land damages in England, per mile, The twenty days allowed by law to continue the sale of the Deleware division of the Pennsylvania canals, expired on the 27th instant, when only thirty-one shares had been sold. The seller gave notice at the close of the sale that the money would be returned to the purchasers of those shares. This first attempt to dispose of the public works in accordance with the law passed atthe last session of Congress, has proved a failure, and we have great fears that the attempt to sell the ma‘n line, may prove as unfor- tunate. The tax law, passed at the same time, has not yet been tested. That may fail as effectually as the late sale. We annex a tablo showing the quantity of cotton yarn exported from Great Britain for the first six months of the yearg 1843 and 1844, naming the countries to which the exports went and the quantity taken by each. The immense exports to this country from Greet Britain, have been confined to cotton threads, cords, calicoes, plain and printed, hosiery, laces, and shawls, Our manufacturers supply the home demand for yarn, to a very great exten- The Germans, are striving to do without the yarns of Great Britain. The treaty recently perfected by the repre- sentatives of the United States and the Zoll Verein, would have opened a very great market for yarns manufactured in this country, but our goverament could not ratify the treaty in consequence of the existing treaties with Great Britain‘and other nations, stipulating that equal favors and privileges should be extended to all, ‘The manufacturers of Great Britain claimed the same privileges the ZollVere- in treaty would have extended to the Germans. The go verdment of GreatBritain rested perfectlycontented during the ‘between Mr. Wheaton and the Prussian Minister, that equal benefits must be extended TINEA Nn ero ani ib th ht to their own manufactures that were offered the Germans, ‘The existence of the numerous treaties between the ‘United States and other nations of the world, will prevent the formation of any treaty of reciprocity with any single nation, that may wish to meet this country on fair and equal terms. The tariff act of 1842 hes been altered from time to time, as any particular clause has been discovered conflicting with any existing treaty, and any approuch to a more liberal construction of our tariff with the intent of favoring any particular nation, cannot be carried through unless it acts with equal advantage to all. We must open our ports to the entry of any particular manufacture or any perticular production to every nation manufacturing or producing that article, on equal terms, be they pro- hibitory orotherwise. In consequence of the great over- sight exhibited in forming treaties between this and other ceuntries, we have been compelled to abandon many very extensive markets for our manufactures, and toad here to a policy totally opposite from jthat which many interests of the country require. Pwirapecruia, August 29, 1844. Let justice be done. I am assured that injustice has been done the Hon, John Sargent in my letter yesterday. It is said by his friends, that he did not vote with the Irish Repeal party, and that he was strongly in favor of removing the Dock Ward elec- tion poll from Divin’s Repeal Hotel; that not only himself, but members of his family voted in favor of the Native American house of Mr. Reese.— When the meeting was first organized at Divin’s, a motion was made that Mr. Sargent take the chair, which was defeated by the locofocos, they being the strongest party. I like to see fair play. In theatricals, matters are looking up. At the Walnut, Forrest and J. Wallack, are drawing very good houses. To-night, the Gladiator will be per- formed. The regular season of this well con- ducted establishment will commence on Saturday, Sept. 7th, and I trust Mr. Marshall may have a very profitable one of it. He isa Sesorring, mana- ger, and withal a gentleman and clever fellow. Burton’s house is pretty well patronisea, but he lacks the energy displayed at the American. It is said that Mr. Macready is engaged, and will ap- pear next week ; but this, I doubt, from the fact that his name is not yet * underlined” on the bill. The “Olympic” opens on Monday next, with General Welsh, and his admirable corps of eques- trians. The establishment throughout has been beautifully renovated, and from the liberal spirit of Gen. W. our citizens may rest assured that the Olympic Circus willbe one of the most fashionable places ot public amusement during the winter eea- son. Mr. Lewis T. Pratt, I learn, is negotiating for the Chesnut—one account states he has already leased it—but I fear the days of “wuld Drury” have long since set. The Native Americans have at length completed their ticket in the city, and a good one itis. Yes- terday afternoon, Thomas D. Grover, Eeq , was nominated for County Commissioner, and Augus- tine R. Peale for Auditor. Mr. P. is a young man much esteemed for his many noble and generous characteristics, and has certainly strong claims upon the Natives, from the fact that he lost an arm. during the attack upon the Native American meet- ing in Kensington in May last. = Mioute guns were fired this morning in testimony of respect to the memory of Commodore Dalles, deceased, A brute named Charles Shoemaker, was arrested and held to bail in $1000 this morning, for violent- ly assaulting a yous woman named Kincade, in emer The fellow knocked her down with 18 fist, Nearly all of the visiters at Cape May have re- turned, as the season terminates after Monday next. The * natives” turned out in great strength this morning, for the purposes of attending a “sign rais- ing and mass meeting” at Chesnut Hill, a short distance from the city.
