MONEY MARKET. Friday, Aug. 23—6 P. M. The Stock Market is gradually but steadily sinking to the lowest‘point. The brokers will soon find considerable difficulty in getting all the funds they want from the banks, as other customers have made their appearance in the market. ‘The banks have already commenced drawing in their loans to the stock speculators, The offerings from the merchants are daily increasing, and at the rate our imports are coming inand the fall trade progressing, the demand from this source mnst steadily improve. The banks in their anx- iety to supply any demand for money that may spring up, may carry eut their former movements, and expand as fast as the necessities of theircustomers may require.— We have no doubt but that in less than sixty days the rate for money will be firm at even per cent, and that the demand will be quite active at that rate. ‘Tho'Commissioners appointed to liquidate the debts of the Commercial Bank of New Orleans, have given notice that the deposits and outstanding circulation will be paid in specie The sale of the stock of the Delaware Canal Company drags along very slowly. Our importations from France have been very heavy this year, and the increase from that country is much larger than from Great Britain. Nothing will do more towards stopping the immense supplies that are daily landed on our shores, than an immediate exporta- tion of specie, and shipments cannot commence too quick. A few millions forwarded now, might prevent a very great drain. A large exportation of specie . would have a very favorable effect on our local importers, for a time, but we much question the effect abroad. Whena speculative mania takes root, it is very difficult to eradicate it. The present state of trade has been produced by the recent expansions in the currency, and it will be found very difficult to bring things down again to the former level. The commercial classes are fairly in the tide and they must go down the stream together and get ashore wherever they can fiada place. It ia impossible toturn back. A large exportation of specie from this country, at this time, would no doubt cre- ate quite an excitement on this side of the Atlantic, but it is a matter of great doubt whether it would stop exporta- tions from the other sideto the United States very suddenly ornot. The banks would increase their paper issues to fill the vacuum caused by the drain of specie, and the curren- cy would, in this way, become greatly depreciated. This would advance prices, and so leng as prices are favora- ble, European manufacturers will keep up their ship- ments. The exportation of specie would make but very little (lifference in their movements, provided prices on this side keptup. ‘The importations thus far, this ye are rapidly passing into second end third hands, andthe depreciation that may hercafter take place, caused by in- Creased supplies, or any sudden restriction placed upon the money market, will fall upon our local merchants.— The mennufacturers in Europe will look out and get their pay before the market breaks down. They generally get the first payments made for the season, and get clear of the business before many become bankrupts, The exist- ing condition of commercial affairs, and the results that may grow out of it; the immense importations thus fur, this season, and the disasters that invariably follow over- trading and speculation, can all be attrbuted to the movements of the banking institutions of this city and State. Had the policy pursued by our banks eighteen months ago, been adhered to; had their operations been as restricted since, as they were in January, 1843, we should not have beforeusthe unfavorable prospect that every one must see, An increase of twenty millions of dollars in loans and discoupts, in a city like this, could not have had any other effect than to encourage specn- lation and increase our importations. The banks have created the present state of things. The tariff has cre- ated a harvest out of the operations created by the banks forthe general government. The revenue, from cus. toms, so fur, is immense. The party friendly to the pre- sent tariff is very extravagant in culogizing that act, and its popularity is, no doubt, much enhanced by the rapidity with which it will extricate the gov rn- ment from debt. The tariff act of itself would have been of little use in bringing about the ends attributed to it, had not the bavks, having the power, conteived it good policy to expand their movements, and therebyjopen onr ports to the manufacturers of the world. A deprecia- tion in the value of our currency, below that of the na- tions of Enrope, acts like the raising of an embargo.— Our ports and principal markets are immediately filled with foreign productions. Iwo S—1000 1 We LENS ECON Houth a rae BY Y THE SOUTHERN MAIL. Philadelphia. (Correspondence of the Herald.) Puiwavetruia, Aug. 23, 1844. Dear Bennerr :— As I predicted, John M. Scott has already de- clined the nomination of the whigs to the office of Mayor, and refused to accept, as I am informed, any political office whatever. He values his char- acter too high, and needs repose from a long pub- lic life. Charles Gibbons, Esq., President of the Clay Club, is spoken of, but he will neverdo. The best informed say, that they will make none, being perfecily satisfied with the native candidate, Mr. Keyser. The democrats will take up a strong man— Samuel H. Perkins, Esq.—but with the natives and whet against him, stands no chance of being elect- ed. One thing is certain, in the event of Keyser’s election, not a mogle man now holding office, either in the police or watch department, will be retained. Three-fourths of them are now Irish! Little Edward Joy Morris—him with the beau- tiful red whiskers—was nominated last evenin, sg the whig candidate for Cy eer from the Com ressional District. His defeat is certain. The whig gathering at Vincent Town, N. J. ays afternoon, | am told, was a great affair jome potions: men, oan ae childre were present—lots of speaking, an mty to eat. The scrambling for the lattes fe seidite me been ludicrous in the extreme; here was a chap thrusting his hand into a dish of ham, another ing @ slice of cheese, while all were read our each other! Two or three sccldonta had. nigh oc- curred. The horses attached to the wagon in which Bela Badger was seated became violent, reared and kicked, endangering the lives of all.— Several were frightened and leaped out. One team ran into another, and here again the deuce wasto play! Women screamed—men laughed, and all was over. The affair throughout was supreme- ly iudicrous, as all such meetings are. A notorious counterfeiter and burglar, Josiah Height was captured yesterday after considerable difficulty by our very extraordinary police—extra- ordinary, not only for pipe-laying, at for their in- attention to business—and committed by Mayor Scott to answer the several chi inst him. Abraham Long, the last individual arrested for “riot, treason aud murder,” has been rlpenee on entering bail in the sum of $6000! at Long ia ingane, no sensible man questions, excey i the fel- low Murphy, who swore so awfully hard against him. It is absurd, to believe for one moment on Long could ever have entertained serious: less have carried into eflect—that which hi attributed to him. At an early hour this morning, a destructive fire, the work of an incendiary, took place in the north western part of the city, Callowhill street, near Nixon, consuming a wheelwright shop, ana some eight dwelling houses, the property of Messrs. Brown & Collins. The entire contents of the buildings were already destroyed, besides c derable damage was done to several a ry houses. The loss cannot fall short of $8,000 or $10,000. ‘Two er three rows, of course, took place. Between two and three o’clock, a large brick building on the Germantown road, near Second nea atiig ied as I machine shop, &c., was fired, lestroyed. Loss estimated "at 85,000. ma thee companies, deterred through fear trom attending the first fire, the Fairmount, Globe, and Good Intent engines, weve in attendance. A oe in Norris’ Alley, between Front and Se- cond, and Salat pili was slightly injured about four o’clock bets na T regret to state, a cowardly attack y a set of desparate fellows, said to be members of the “ Fairy,” was made upon the carriage and members of the Wiccacoe heer, who retreated. Their alarm bell was soon sounded, and a powerful force immediately came to their relief. In the mean time, the ‘*Fairy” left the ground. Look out for serious disturbances at the next fires. The stock market to-day was more animated, but the downward tendency still pre: y ja Fives again declined, showing a difference of 4 since yesterday. Wilmington Railroad shares —and there is entirely too munch gambling in this stock—went down to 244 at the Second Board. About 900 shares changed hands. May, Captain Kuapp, at this port from San Blas, w ence she sailed 2d inst. Jearn that the port of San Juan was atill blockaded. There was an American brig (name not recollecte4,) from New York, James Roberts, master, ly. ing at Blewfield, which Capt. Knapp think: will have to return without ‘dischargi h go. All the vessels frem the Straits of Gibrall d Italy have been obliged to land their cargoes at Salt Creek The British have appointed a Minister and Consul for the Musquito Shore, who had urrived and taken charge of the port of Blewfield, in the name of Muequito King’s son, and have commenced making new laws. A tonnage duty of fifty cents per ton will be levied on all vensels arrivnig at Blewfield, Penil Key, or Corn Telends, during the present month of” August. Cocaton and Sal! Creek were the only ports of entry held by the Cine: bians, and it was generally understood that the English would soon take them in charge as belonging to the do- minions of the Musquito King.—Balt.
