Theatricals—- Excplosion—-Natives—-Duels—- Pros- pects of Mr. Clay—‘The Herald. Dear Bennett :— linclude myself among the list of your occasion- al correspondents from this city, and shall commu- fnicate with you from time to time whenever any thing transpires of sufficient interest for the columns of your interesting and widely circulated sheet. Theatricals are doing wellin this place—the Wal- nut and Arch street theatres continue to draw good houses, and the managers of each are stretching every nerve to cater in the most liberal and attrac- tive manner. It sarprized many of your readers here that so many misstatements should have been made by one of your correspondents, in regard to the patronage of the Walnut, which is certainly the best conducted establishment we have, aud patronized to a greater extent than the Arch, though the later has drawn good house for a short time past. Burton, | understand, bas leased the Arch forthree years, and signed a lease to that efleci emwetd if ‘rhe ie jlosion of the steamboat Portsmouth, whieh biypened recently 1n the Delaware, is attr buted io « malicious feeling on he part of the for- merengiovers. With what plausibility | cannot but rumor has many reports in circulation, hich will, no doubt, lead to an examination ol the affair, It should be investigated Every thing is quiet here in regard to the natives. These geotlemen have one or two papers here, adited by decided block-heads, who do more inju ry to their cause than all the inob-violence lately exhibited. Your expore of the * Yellow Flower” and ‘Native Blossom,” prodaced considerable sensation among the natives here, many of them approving ot the judicious remarks fiom your wel’- matured Judgment. 1 should like you to see some specimens of our natives, as they style themselves, and you would at once exclaim with honest Jack Falstaff, ‘ Out upon these rogues, I will not march through ‘oventry with them, that’s flat.” That duel between the Judge and Advocate has not come off yet, although “ expectations are on tip toe” when one of the parties returns to the city of Brotherly Love.” The Evening Mercury has varied in its candi- date for the Presidency, coming out for ‘ Polk and Dallas,” with a large apology for the with- drawal of Mr. Tyler, whose reasous you, no doubt, have seen before this will reach your hands. The prospects of Mr Clay in Tennessee are very flattering. Severat gentlemen from that State have just informed me that if betting be atest, two to ‘one on Clay can be had, so certain are they of the State going for the whigs. The circulation of your paper bere is on the in- erease, and there is more reliance placed upon its statements, than any other issued in the city of Gotham. So much for tact, taste, and talent, three indispensable qualities for a "journalist. Aw revoir. + Natnan. Newport, R. I. {Correspondence of the Herald.) Newport, R. I., August 18, 1844. Sea Bathing—The Polka in the Water—the Clifs— Distinguished Strangers—Ole Bull—Borghese— Cassella—Sea Bass and Snipe. Dean Bennett:—I have watched your columns closely for some time for a full and faithful history of sayings and doings at this enchanting place. 1 have been at the famous ‘‘ Ocean Hous2” now for some two weeks, and every day adds new pleasure to the most delightful scene. There are about 400 staying at this magnificent Hotel, which is planned after the U.S Hotel at Saratoga, but 1 must say the conductor falls far short of the inimitable Mar- vin, in the management of his establishment. | could point out many things which could be easily improved, but as there is another palace to be erected next year, by a company of New Yorkers, we hope for a lithe improvement. Every house in the place is filled to overflowing, the principle ones of which are, the Beleveu House, accommodating about 250, and the Whitfield House, (named after a worthy ‘citizen of this place,) which will aecom- modate about 175. This is said to be the best Eating House in the place, and from one or two dinings out that 1 have had, I received u very fa- vorable impression of the culinary department. ‘At least two thousand strangers are here at pre- sent, among them some of the most distinguished in the Union. ‘Che Episcopal clezgy are FORSIAS bly well represented in the persony of the Bishops ot Tennessee, Massachusetts, and Rhode Is'and. The famous General D’Evereux, who fought so gallantly for the liberties of Columbia, and then lost his eyesight, is here with his assistant, and justly receives much attention. Mr. Middleton, and a large number of distinguished and fashiona- ble gentlemen from the South and East, (for here the two extremes appear to meet,) are making this their head quariere. Politicians sppear to shun this place as they would the yellow fever, the air being entirely too pure for such kind of animals. Most of the New Yorkers who are here stop at the “Ocean,” several of which, both gentlemen and ladies, are striving for deur life to * get the hang” of the Poika, under the instruction of Mons. But really, the only dance that gives me any satisfaction is what you term the “Polka in the water.” To lead a beautiful, well- formed, soft-limbed, straight und narrow-footed {e- male, far out into’ the green ocean, and dance a minute with her and the wild waves; to have the roaring of the mighty waters for music, the vast dom Ifeaven tora canopy, and the hard sanded botiom. of the ea for a dancing floor—what can ox Palithis? Can you, with your well-known fruitfai imagination, fancy anything equal to this? Do not suppose, however that we water nymphs imitate in our costume, old Adam and Eve, while yet in a state ot innocence, No, no; tar from that. The Peris of the deep have naught to gaze upon, except a white and pretty foot, and love-Iiiling eyes, foreven the face, as well as form, is hidden from view. But oh! the sport, the sport is delight- ful. From New York I notice here some of your most fashionable citizens. You may well suppose with such society aud so much of it, very little idle time havgs upon our hands. We have a most ex- cellent band, and what with dancing and rambling upon the “‘chfia” by moonlight. and listening to the sweet sounds of music as it echoes among the rocks and caverns—what with the music of a Bor- ghese, of Ole Bull, of Cassella, and other minor stars, we manage to forget the world and think of naught but the g! i of Newport. Do come Mr. Bennett, and I will show you how to pull in « sea bass weighing 40 pounds. 0, ’tis glorious eport, and for those fond of gnaning there is no end to the game ; go prepare youree f another year fora visit, for all the world will undoubtedly be here, as it must take the lead in fashionable watering places, Harpcastix. Bennett, Eso— Str—Having never noticed among your numer- ous correspondents, any communication from this place, I suppose it will not be uninteresting for you to hear occesionally, as our town is so well known for its beautiful and healthy situation, and also in the immediate vicinity of the last exploits of that distinguished warrior Metacom, or Metamora, as he is poetically called, when represented by the great tragedian, Forest—who, when visiling afriend in this place some two years since, endeavored to locate the spot of his death onthe west side of Mt. Hope, on land of the late Hon, James Dwolf, about two miles from the village. I am not a little eurprieed that the good people, when flreing from the cities during the hot weath- er, should not select this place in preference to Newport, a8 we possess all the advantages, without the disadvantages, of the latter, viz: ther dense sea fogs—with this one sad objection hotel: however, this is the fanlt of the public. We have now, however, sojourning with us, reveral personages of note, among whoin are the distinguished luwyer of your city, Prercott Hall, Exq., also the god-like Ole Bull, Who is induced to pean a few weeks here with his trend, Fiizhenry Jomer, Exq., a wealthy gentleman from Boston, who selects this town, in preterence to other places, fora summer retreat. We number trom 3,500 to 4,000 inhabitants. Our trade ia sgricultural, commerce and manu- facturing; of the former, the principal prodvels wre enions, the annual proceeds of which | understund 1s something like $50,000, which as principally die- tributed ety oe poorer Claes of the community. We have two lurge cotton mills, one of which, wii- derthe agency of John Norris, E:q., ha» paid a dividend of 40 per cent profits for the jast twelve months—but | regret to say the commerce hus td ly fallen off, as well as the general character und tone of the place, since the decease of 1s great benefactor, the Hon. James Dwoif. Pokayoxer. A Court 1n Jowa.—The following account of a Curt in Iowa is given in a lener from the Upper Mississippi:— ‘Iowa is now the finest frontier countay in the Weat, and is settling up very fast. Judge Williams related to me some amusing scenes that he wit- nessed, when he started on his circuit for the pur- pose of organizing wud holding his first’ cours among the rude frontier people. In many counties they had not time even om erect any kind of shelter fora court house. The best provision which could be made, was to form seats of logs benewth the shade of a lurge tree, with a raised gent bear its body, for the Judge. The Sherifl would open court by mounting a stump, or mound, near by, and cry- ing “Oh yes, oh yes,” &e., announcing to the whole universe that the court was then opened, and inviting all who had businese, to attend. ‘The Clerk sat on a block of wood, and used a shingle on his knee for a desk. After the Grand Jury were empannelled, and charged by the Judge, they were sent in care of the Shenff 10 a large hol- low or ravine, in which aber could sit in conclave beyond the view of the Court, or spectators. A smaller hollow or revine was appropriated for the use of the Petit Jury. The grass grew very tall in the neighborhocd, and if the jurymen lay down in a ring in the grese, they could still more perfectly exclude themselves from observation. The Judge said that, one day after having chargea the Grand Jury, Hoey Wheel oot them to their quarters in the large hollow, a tall, raw-boned, live Yankee looking man, with hat in hand, addressed him as follows :— “May it please your honor, I wish to Fpeak to you.” ‘Order, sir, what is ut’ * Judge,” tinued he, with the utmost gravity, ‘‘ is it right for fellows to snake it in the grass?” “ How? whatis that, sir?” ** Why you see,” said the Yan- kee, “there’s some fellows who's tarual fraid the Grand Jury will find something agin *m, which they desarve, and they are snaking up to the Grand Jury on their bellies in the grats, kind of trying to hear what the Jury are talking about.” “No,” meneascna the Judge, with as much gravily as he coul command, “I do notallow of ‘snaking.’ Here, Mr. Sheriff, go station a guard around each Jury's hollow, and if amanis found ‘snaking,’ have him brought before me, and | will cause him to be punished. Indeed, if this ‘snaking’ is per- sisted in, 1 shall recommend a special act to be passed, making it a misdemeanor.” The fact was, the Judge said, there were present at the time, some barefooted vagrant rescale, who rere penpanly justly suspected; of horse stealing, bad “snaked i” on the Grand Jury, i in order to find out whether the Jury intended ‘to present them, and if eo, to gain time by this clandestine warning, and flee the jurisdiction of the Court, by escaping into Missouri.
