W. 8. RICHARDSON, M.D. Axazi MONEY MARKET. Thursday, August 22—6 P. M. Stocks are flat enough to-day. At the Old Board Long Island fell off 1 per cent; Canton Co. }; Paterson, 4; Stonington, 1; Reading Rai’road, 1}; Farmers’ Trust, §; Mlinois, 4; Indiana, 3; Pennsylvania 6’s, }; Morris Canal, 4; Ohio 6's closed firm at yesterday’s prices. At the New Board, Long Island declined } per cent; Canton, 3; United States Bank, }; Farmers’ Trus',}. The opera- tions at both Boards were very limited The market is very much depressed, ond well it may be.— The condition of commercial affairs generally is very unfavorable to stock operations, and there is very little chance for an improvement until our foreign import trade experiences some change. The probability of large ship- ments of specie daily increases, and we have no doubt, a few weeks will suffice to get rid of large amounts. In view of this condition of things, we cannot conceive how it is possible for stocka to improve. ‘The Manhattan Gas Light Company have declared a dividend of three pefcent, payable on the 2d of Septem. bor. ‘The transfer books close on the 26th inst. The loans and discounts have dimished $19,754. The specie, $42,290. The circu- lations, $63,924, and the deposits, $27,126, ‘This shows a very slight variation. Any contraction in the move- ments of the banks is much to be desired, but the con- traction should, at all times, be very gradual, to prevent any injary to the operations of trade. Since May last the banks of Ohio have been reducing their operations, and the reductions have been very steady. We fear the banking system of Ohio will not get once more fairly re- gulated, and reduced to a proper point, before movements are made tocarry into operations banks based on some new plan of issue, andthe State become once more flood- ed with @ paper currency. The movements of the Benka of this city and State are closely watched by the institutions of other States, which govern themeelves accordingly. An expansion on the part of our hanks is followed by a general expan- sion throughout thecountry. It will be observed in the annexed tables that the Banks of this city have been steadily increasing their lines of discount. New York Crry Banks, Loans. Specie. The increase amounts to more than one hundred per cent in nine months. The banka of this State will, without doubt, steadily increase their movements until our currency becomes as expanded as in 1836, Their operations for the past eighteen months, cer * tainly looke as though such was their intention. We have now a little more specie, but a very slight drain would soon take off the surplus. The immense importations that are daily pouring into our ports, ere produced, partly by the expansions that have recently taken place in our cur- reney. The banks have contributed largely to create the present state of things, and they are now, in a great measure, compelled to carry it further. Very lately the banks have been filled with offerings for discount, from the importing and jobbing houses. The large importa tions have created a demand for goods from the jobbers — A ies of speculation has been produced by the im- mense supplies. This mania has recently increased to an alarming extent, by the importers, in forcing on the market their stocks. So far the operations have been of a private nature, and con‘ined to the importer and jebber. Both parties have very large stocks, and the moment the jobbers cease purchasing, the importers will fill the auc. tion houses, and there will be attempts made to force off their large supplies before the market breaks. down, which event must soon take place. How can it possibly be otherwise? Look at the manifests ofthe packets which arrived yesterday, and that of the George Washington arrived to-day, and if any one can honestly resist the con- viction that @ terrible break down must soon take place, we are much mistaken. Many who have had no fears before, this season, have them now.jiThe banks have gone too far to back out now. They hi by depreciating the currency, advanced prices so that foreign manufactures pay a profit to the manufacturers, and our markets have become filled. Our jobbers have been induced to make the most extensive purchases, and they are now compelled to come forward and ask increased loans from the banks On the other hand, our importers have for some time past had so many heavy payments to make for duties, &c , that they also come in for bank favors. The operations of trade for the past few months, have done more towards creating another revulsion in money and commercial affairs, than those of the three previous years. aon Stock Exchange. 2000 Ohi ouhg a L be RR 5000 8 10000 Od 98 o do 74 50 Reading RR 7 ~~ do 414 50 do Wi 2 do LJ 10% 50 8 do RR cash 41 50 Stoni: n iS 0 do 3 Mech "Pr 560° 50 do bot 400 do cash 60 274 Norwich & Wor W Paterson RR 8 50 lo 100 Canton.Co 3734 100 lo 625 0 L Island RR 4 90 do 00 635 20 do &% 40 cash. 69 20 = do 50 cash 63 1" t 4 60 m3 s Morris Canal do eas do yp 84 fall 50 do 5 84 0 eam rat Ti 10 do oh ue Board. The Whig City Conference met last evening, and Nominated John M, Scott, Esq., for Mayor. Now, this is all a farce, as the Whigs know full well Mr. Scott can never again be elected to the office of Mayor, from the fact that during the late disturb- ances,he did not discharge his duty to the full extent of thelaw. Might he not have prevented the burn- ing of St. Augustine 1 Might he not, upom numer- ous occasions, have prevented the disgraceful scenes of riot and outrage among the firemen ?— But Mr. Scott will never permit this Dame to enter into the contest—he will decline, and inthe end, the Wigs will cast their vores ire Keyser, the Na tive candidate. They are desirous of ccmpromis- ing with the new 'y, although they possess bit- ter opposition to their principles! The Natives again assembled last evening, and made some further nominations. A State tor was nominated, and a select council ticket chosen. A number of the most respectable merchants of Market and Front streets have arrayed themselves in the front ranks of the American party, faterpiin, ed to do battle against the old parties. ‘The College will be completed by the Native prod icans, and God grant the men who have so shame- fully plundered the widow and orphan, may be i led from the honorable ey have too disgraced ‘The Girard College !—the Girard Co lege !!’’ will be the rallying ery of the Natives. Augustine R. Peale, the young man who lost his left arm in the Kensington riots, will be taken up for the office of Auditor. A fellow, pamantheshe name of map, the mate of the brig Wm. J. Watson, Geo Tendell, wee was held to bail this morning by the Revec for com- ming most reece assault upon the person ot Mi ronisca Peale, with acowskin. The perian reside in Jefi lerson row, Lombard street, and Landell, it seems, had beaten one of his chil- dren with a cowhide to such a degree that Mrs. Peale begged him to desist, when flow intoa violent rage and aseailed her in a Teeniae more befitting a brute than a man.
