I have once within the present mouth, proposed asketch of the events passing in our ex more than giving you citing and warlike city, but they have crowded so fust upon one another, that I could not up to this time find a moment which seemed to promise a termination to the excitement. The month commenced dry end warm and to this is probably owing the promptness with which the spring fights commenced. The season opened with a combat between Ma- jor Miller, the United Siates Marshall, and Major Dunn, a gentleman well known in the South West, aa an accomplished teacher of the principles of m1. litary tactics and sword exercise. The attack was begun by Major Dunn, in consequence of some as- “eed cast upon his character by Maj ne jor Miller. parties were separated, but met again and with shales and after a shot trom each, Major Duns, (who received the ball of his antagoni the lappel of his coat,) made a vigorous cane, with considerable damage to his ist through use of his adversary. A few days afterwards, a duel was fought with rifles at fifteen paces, between Mr. Thos. E. Robbins and Mr. James Downs, in which the latter received a severe wound in the right breast from the first fire of his opponent. The canse of this duel was a pub- lication in the Sentinel, relative to the sule of some fifty acres of the town of Vicksburg, which were levied on by the Marshall, Miller, to satisf ment owned by S. &. The challenge was accepted—the y parties met the next morning, and Mr. Downs was wounded at the first fire. These counties are in the south- ern part of the New Purchase. The rest, a large tract of country, is rapidly settling, but not yet or- ganized into counties. On the first Monday in April, a meeting was held and a vote taken on the propriety of calling a con- vention to draft a constitution for a State Govern- ment, which was decided for, and in October the convention is to meet at Iowa City and go to work ; and when the thing is done, I'll tell you what it looks like. I will tell such, here is spread out before us « meadow of fine grass, on which each horse, ox, cow or sheep, can feed and grow tat. Here is a soil, which, when cultivated, produces every kind of vegetation, which the climate promotes in greater abundance, and with less lubor, than a Yankee farmer can imagine, (setting aside his steam power.) The country is rolling, undulating, and dry, and well adapted to wheat, which will al- ways be a staple product. We have sent forward thousands of ban of flour, and tens of thousands of bushels of wheat of lust year’sgrowth ; and there will be double the quantity for export next year; for the crop never made a better show than it now does. Between | the years 1696 and 1700, it may be remembered that the whole of this coast was infested by gangs | of desperate pirates and treebooters, or buccaneers, as they were then termed; and none so much dreaded os the notorious Capt. Wiliam Kidd. He was alike feared by all nations, and a heavy price Was set upon his head; so much so that England was obliged at length to ft out a couple of large vessels on purpose to capture him, if possible. It was well known that his principal’ place of resort and refuge was Leng Island Sound; and here, ina short time, these els made their appearance, and theyeither discovered the object of their expedition, or he espied them, it is not exacdy known which. He ran his veesel close under Gardner's Island, where himselt and crew loaded “themselves with such treasures as they could convemently carry about their persecs, and landed on the island, where a considerable portion of their booty was buried, and Kidd informed Mr. Gardner, who resided on, the Island at that time, where it was deposited, telling him at the same time, that he must answer for it with his life when he returned. Kidd then set sail. up the North River, and reached the point before mentioned, where, finding escape with his vessel impossible, or that he could not proceed further with safety, determined upon destroying her. The crew then, it is supposed, separated and icattered themselves over different parts of the interior. Shortly after, Kidd und some five or six of his » crossed over to Boston, where they were taken prisoners. Upon being interrogated, he inform- ed the then Governor of Massachusetts where he had deposited his booty on Gardner's Island, observing hat only himeelf and Gardoer knew where it lay, sud the Governor sent over parties to obtain it, but Mr. Gardner refused to poiut it out unul he was perfectly sati that he was safe from the menaces of Kidd and his associates. Upon its re- covery and examination, it was found to be of up- wards ot a quarter of a mujlion in yalue. Mr, Gardner then received a receipt for the same from the governor, which is still ia the possession of one of the descendants ef that gentleman. Kidd was further interrogated as to what had become of the remainder of his treasures, for it Wa» gene- rally believed that he had a much greater amount, having but avery short time prevously captured three Spanish galleons with cargoes valued at near upon ten millions of dollars. In reply, Kidd, it is said, observed that whatever else. there was wert down with his vessel. Shortly after this, he and his compavions were conveyed to England, where they were tried and found guilty of murder and executed in the early part of 1701. Several attempts have been made at different times by various parties to ascertain whereabouts the remains of this ve: lay ;, and it is said that some 26 or 30 years since parties were sent from England to ascertain if possible its situation, but withoutsuccess. Some 10 or 15 yearssince Mr, A. G. Thompson, of Wall street, whom we believe to be a descendant of the Gardners’ previou:'y allu- ded to, in conjunction with othergentlemen, secu- red the land and gota grant from the State tosearch for the remains of this vessel. They, acting on the traditions ded down from “sire to son ” and other connecting links, after some years’ toil and expense were fortunate enough to tind evidence of having discovered the remains of a vessel near unto the spot where itis suid Kidd hod destroyed his.
