(Correspondence of the Herald.) Wasninaton, June 7, 1844. The death of Mr. Cuculla, on the 20:h ult., bas elt « vacancy in the Collectorship at New Orleans. understand that David Hayden, Fisq., late deputy collector ut Natchitoches, will be appointed to suc- ceed him. He is anable man, aud well qaulified for the place. I presume the Senate will confirm him. “ There is @ rumor here that Mr. Tyler intends shortly to make one grand, particular general sweep out, and clean out of all whig clerks, and appointees of everyname and deseription. Itis adoletulrumor, T understand, irom the Hon, Cave Johnson, that it is intended to hold an immense democratic mass meeting at Nashville, some time in August—th day not yet fixed. Gen Jackson will preside at it, and most distinguished epeakers will be invited from all parts of the United States. Mr. McDuffie is reported to have said, that he will mount his horse, and make electioneering speeches all the way to and from the Nashville mass meeting.— Others will probably do likewise. &G- 1 would call attention to the remarks of Mr. tvans upon the remission of the duty on railroad iron. More Bers.—Mr. T. of Kentucky bets $50 with Mr. B. of Indiana, that the latter cannot name seven States which will go for Polk, Mr. B. cepts, and names New Hampshire, South C; Alabama, Arkansas, Mississippi, Missouri, ani Virginia. Mr H. of Missouri accepts the game bet with T.—writings drawn. Mr. T. also oflered to bet any amount which he was able to cover, on either of these five states going for Clay, to wit, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Marsan or Kentucky. No takers nt. Mr. 8. of Ohio offered to bet $600, aad wat ae the money, on the general result, No takers present. ‘ # All the small talk and floating conversation here are about the result of the elections, probabilities, opinions, bets, &e. It is said—and is probably true—that the Indiana delegation, Dr. Duncan, and others, are in favor of Mr. Tyler's proposition of running a union ticket. Indeed I should judge that this Preraition meets with the general acceptance of the Democratio arty, with the exception of the Van Buren clique, right, Benton & Co., who are most strenuously opposed to it—the reason why, will be denaiogee in due time. i Wasuinoton, June, 7, 1844. In Executive Session to-day, speeches were 5. aCe ‘aro! made by Messrs. Crittenden, Bay |, Sevier, and Semple. Mr. Crittenden’s speec! a woken of, if not as an entire failure, at least as unworthy of his high reputation. It is supposed that neither his heart nor his judgment were in it. Episodes were thrown in by Senators Woodbury, Walker, and Benton—the latter's the longest. To-morrow speeches are expected from Senators Buchanan, Berrien, Archer, and others: id the Senate intend to sit out all the speeches, if it takes till midmght, and take final action upon the treaty, which ot course will be rejected. Allusion is made in yesterday's Herald to what Mr. Wright said to Judge C. ‘The words, as they are reported »bout town, are, “J'l take the atump, and I'll expose the infamous conspiracy or plot oy which Mr. Van Buren was cheated out of the nomi- nation.” Mr. Wright’s stump speeches will pro- bably be carefully remembered. S. B. 5jo'clock. P.M. ‘The Senate did not dispose of the Texas Treaty to: hut will do so to-morrow. ‘ne House has passed the Navy Bill, and alse the bill to abolish corporeal punishments. TWENTY_KIGHTH CONGRE! FIRST BESBION, Henate. Wasutneton, June 7th, 1844. (MORSK’S TELEGRAPH. Mr. Cnoare introduced a bil for the purchase of Professor Morse’s telegraph, and the extension of it from Washington to the city of New York. The bill was read twice and referred, NATURALIZATION. a, Mr. Axcuer presented a yecious from Philadel. phia similar to those already presented, and took occasion to express his concurrence with the sen- timents of the memorialists. He said he would, if necessary, himself introduce a bill in accordance with their wishes. RAILROAD IRON. ian Mr. Evans called up the bill for the remission of duties on railroad iron, and made some remarks on it. He said he was a: the time opposed to the due ties as levied in the bill of ’42. He is now decided- a in favor of the passage of the present bill, from the moet mature reflection and careful examination, The object of the bill is to fac:litate the construc- tion of tailroads throughout the United States, The Bill also was strictly in accordance with the true principles of protection, as he had advocated them—which are to furnish labor to the working classes—an object which this bill will tend tu ac- complish, by furnishing them with labor in the construction of the roads. Mr. Evans staled that the average cost of rilroads per mile in this country, is about $20,000. he ex pense of imported rails per mile for roads is about $2250. So that the balance of the cost of the roads is about $17,500 per mile—all of which is for labor ~ American lubor—For a railroad ie an American manufacture. In 1840, railroad works in progress would cost about $175,000, there are now to be expended, in ot these works, about $74,000,000. $7,000,000 are required for foreign iron—the duties on which are now only some $5,000,000. This would, in the first instance, call for an equal amount of domestic iron in the construction of en- gines, wheels, chains, &c. The objections eo trom the producers of domestic iron. This answer is, first, that as yet no domestic rails have yet been produced—and he doubted if they would be. The present duty of 25 per cent, does not furnish pro- tection enough to induce manufacturers to enter into the manufacture of railroad iron. It is true, manufacturers promise to supply orders at some future day. But it 1 uncertain, and in the mean time shall all States and railroad companies wait in this uncertainty? Manu- facturers say that they will go on and construct works, if they can get orders large enough to make it an object for capitalists. They will not. invest their money in these works until sufficient protection becomes the settled and estab- lished policy of the government. The price of railroad iron is very low in England—£4 17, and some even lese than £4. The reason of this low price is the great demand fer railroad iron a few years since—the consequent increase of railroad iron manufactories, and the over-etock now in the market .Mr. Evans said that there is now piled up in England railioad iron enough to snpply the demands of the whole world for a whole year to come, even if all these works were to stop during that time. But they will not stop, for it would be a greater loss to stop these manutactosies than for them to go on. Engiand supplies the world with railroad iron ; even Russia, a8 well as France, Bel- gium, and all other countries upon the continent of rope. It is objected that if we remit the duty, prices would rire. No. The United States take uta very small and insignificant proportion of all the iron supplied to the world. So that the remis- sion could produce but a litt'e or no effect upon prices. The United States require only about one Afteenth ot all the Railroad iron which England manutactures, It must be considered that the great tron mines of Pennsylvania and eb d grown into prosperity by means of the faci forded them by Railroads constructed with iron, imported duty free. There are multitudes of mines in States to which there are no railroads. Aud are these mines to be kept in the back ground, and out of the market for the benefit of old mines, because railroad iron isso high priced that no railroads can be constructed to them? Mr. Evane made several allusions to the Mount Savage Ircn Works in Mary- land, who object to the remission of this duty — He said that the capital of this company is very large—some $800,000. Col. Merrick.— $5,000,000. : Mr. kvans —Oh, that must be a mistake—that may, however, be the whole capital—but not all aid in. P Col. Menntcx.—Yes, all subscribed and Mr. Evans, (incredulousiy.)—Well, goes "But, at any ahead of anything Thad dreamed of. rate, what I was going to say is, that three-fourths is owned in England, and the of all this capit Board of Control resides in Londom. (Mt. Evan’e remarke were very important and interesting, but I must refer you to his own repert of his speech, probably in the te em Mr. Evans proposed two or three ‘amendments. Mr. Minier got the floor in reply, and moved that the Senate go into extra session, which wes one.
