Since last September the banks have been gralually extending their move- ments in ail departments. The expansion corresponding Jn every branch of the business of the institutions, is #0 far of a very healthy nature, ‘The impetus given to the manufacturing interest of this country, by the restrictions placed upon the currency has given a corresponding impetus to the growing of the raw materiale throughout the country From evidence that we daily receive, we believe that the clip of wool and the yield of the new cotton crop this season, will be much larger than ever before. The agriculturalists of the West have made rapid strides in the production of wool. The immense facilities of that section of the country in raising wool are yet hardly kuown. Within the past tem yeara, the clip has almost doubled itself every year. The ex. tension of a market at home and the opening of markets abroad, will still farther induce productions. Thequanti- ties of wool shipped trom the western ports cannot be con- sidered any data on which to estimate the quantity raised. The immense quantities used in the families of the producers, draws from the exports very largely. Ver- mont has, until very recently, been the largest woel- growing state in the Union; she may be yet according to the extent of her population, but other States go ahead of her in quantity. Wo see by this table that of the amount received at tide water in 1848, a large portion came from ports or places West of Buffalo, as follows :— Creveland, Ib + 391,138 Milan, Dew it, + $8,950 Bandusdy, Ibs, 57, + 67's Chienga ; 0 2 AR Ad SeJoweshand Souusport, 3000 Making a total of 714,903 pounds, leaving 634,621 pounds as the products of the section surrounding Buffalo, thet could find a market at that place—leaving 4,966,976 pounds as the production of this State and that part of those bor- dering on this in the vicinity of Albany and Troy. ‘The Btate of New York must ere long become one of the largest wool growing States in the Union, population and extent of soil considered. We have not only a great market growing up within our own limits, but the recent aboli tion of duties on wool imported into Great Britain, will undoubtedly ina short time open a market for the raw material from this country. In our southern latitudes, and on the extensive prairies of the west, where the win- ter seasous are short and the extent of pasturage unlim- ited the seasons through, we can produce the finest wool at less expense than any other nation in the world; and the low cost of the raw material in this country will, ina short time, enable us to overcome the great ditference in the distance from European markets we labor under, and undersell the producers of Europe at their very doors. FIRST BESBION, Senate. Wasninoron, June 6, 184 ANNEXATION, Mr. Waite presented a retmonstrance from cere tain Western Friends, against ratitying the Treaty. Ao accompanying letter was read stating that those who agreed with them in this protest were believed to be about 25,000 It was trom Indiana. Mr. Berrien objected to the reception of the re- moustrance, on the ground that the annexation of Texas would tend to the “continuance” of slavery. And he said he could see no difference between that and the abolition of slavery. i Mr. Wurré—(with some feeling)—said he should raise, and agitate the question of reception every morning unil the close of the session. He thought the petition should be received, and should persist in agitating the subject. (Mr. White isa Whi Mr. Crrrrenpen hoped nis friend Berrien woul witidraw his objections. The Treaty and accom- panying documents had opened the whole question. These memorialists also expressly disclaimed any connection with abolitionists. oie Gov. Morsn«ap also differed in opinion from Mr. Berrien. He said the memorial only expressed opinion against slavery as it exists in Texas, and therefore did not come within the rul The memorial says that annexation will tend to “uphold,” continue, and extend slavery. (Nore.—This is a very nice and delicate ques- tion] He hoped Mr. Berrian would withdraw his objection to the reception of this petition, and that this body would not now for the first time be a tated by this exciting question. shou Tt anaes Mr. Berrien said the simple proposition in this memorial is, that Texas must not be annexed #f it wilt ‘uphold”—i it will * continue’’—and yf it will © extend”? the institution of slavery. The re- marks of Senators only apply to the latter case of “extending” slavery he memorial clear denounces the institution of slavery, as one whic! # * nation that loveth righ eousnese, and escheweth sin,” should not tolerate. He concluded by moving again that the question of reception lay on the table, and the yeas and nays were demanded. (This cut off all debate.] Mr. Wurte gave notice that he should offer a re- solution, on which he would be heard. Botts a Jones, the Speaker left the chair immediately after the reading of the journal. A motion was made that the two gentlemen interested have a hearing of two hours. This was lost. The House then proceeded to the considera- thon of the main question, and : Mr. Borts rose todetend his claim. He entered upen the examination of the case, and with great ability argued upon the testimony presented. The committee, he suid, had taken five months to cide one part of his case, and while he was absent for four days and « half, they decided the whole of the other hall, and presented it tothe House in the form of a report adverse to his claim. He seid in conclusion that there had never been but one occa- sion and but for one purpose that he had desired to be amember of the present House, and that was to bring forward articles of impeachment. against John Tyler, for bis infractions of the constitution Mr. Jones argued from the reports that he was duly elected a member of the House, and with much ability he sustained his claim.
