MONEY MARKE' ‘Thursday, May 16—6 P. M. Stocks were shaking to-day in the wind. Some advanc- ‘ed and some declined, and very few remained firm at last quotations, Stonington fell off 1} per cent ; Long Island 24 Mohawk }; Norwich and Worcester }; Canton Co advanced 1}; Illinois $; Harlem 1; Paterson, New Jer- sey, Ohio and Kentueky 6's closed firm at yesterday’s pri- ces. ‘The sales were not very large, but the movements in Wall street indicate another advance. An official notice of the Treasury Department, dated the Lith inst, notifies the claimants of the Mexican In- demuity, who have applied to receive the amount payable on their certificates at Boston, New York, Philadelphia or Baltimore, that they may present them for payment on or after the 20th inst, at the Merchants’ Bank, Boston, Bank ot America, New York, Philadelphia Bank, Philadelphia; Arcade Bank, Baltimore, or at the Bank of the Metropo- lis, Washington, The amount to be distributed is $135,454 98, and is equivalent to 672-100 per cent on the respective awards, Receipts of the Western Railroad for the week ending a May 1th 1843, 1844, Passengers. $6681 Freights, &e. $9805 $12,325 $16,486 Exports of Domestics from Boston for the week ending i May lth To East Indios, To West do. The river did not open this year till April 18th, consequently the passengers and freight passing north, must have taken this route. This has swelled the receipts for the time. The Union Mutual In~ surance Company of Philadelphia has declared a dividend of twenty dollars per share on the capital stock, payable on and after the 22d inst. Unica anv Scuengctapy Raitnoap. The great increase of trade this year has heen a harvest for the Reilroad Companies, as the returns clearly show. All the roads runaing through this State are in a very pros- perous condition, and the law above alluded to, in con. nection with the Schenectady road, will have the same beneficial influences on the whole line from Albany to Buffalo. They are safer for investments than almost any thing else, and pay better dividends. ‘The annexed law regulating receivers of banking in corporations, passed the late session of the Legislature” It will serve, if enforced, to correct many abuses now } experienced by the public in the liquidations of defunct banks. Many insolvent banks in thie State have been in the hands of receivers for years, until nearly the whole of the assets have been used up in expenses—the bill holders or the stockhelders, never obtaining redress for the property lost. The movements of the Court of Chancery in this State, have, for along time given great cause for complaint, and we are pleased to see any law passed urging immediate action in all cases committed to its charge, particularly those relating to money matters. ‘The following act compels receivers now in ‘charge of insolvent banking corporations, to report within four months from the passage of the act. Aw Acr netative to Receivers or Banxine Institu- ‘TIONS, PassED May 1, 1844. The People of the State of New York, represented in See nate and Assembly, do enact as follow: 1. It shall be lawful for receivers of the property and effects of banking corporations from time to time te make dividends of the moneys in theirhands among the credi- tors of such corporations, until the payment of such cre. ditors in full; and no dividend shall be made to the stock- holders of such corporations until after the final dividend to the creditors. §2. Such receivers shall be subject to the direction and control of the Chancellor, as to the time of making divi- dends both to the creditors and stockholders of such corporations, and as to the time of clesing up the cun- cerns of such corporations, and rendering their final ac- count. But the receivers already ee shall, within four months from the passage of this act’ render their account, and close the concerns of such corporations, uuless pon spectal application made to the Chancellor, and for good cause shown, the time may be extende but such extension shall not exceed one year, except a8 to assets, or property ia suit or in Court. We hope this law will not remain a dead letter on our statute books. We annex the monthly returns of the Banks of New Orleans. And the assets have increared nearly a |! million more than the liabilities. This is at all eventsa very safe extension. This increased movement in the banks is produced by the great activity of business in New Orleans. The coming forward of the cotton crop and the receipts of produce down the river, have called into employment more capital than was before wanted. "The increase in specie since February amounts to $2,36: 508 ; and we think that when the quarterly report for May ofour banks makes its appearance, that it will be seen that most of this amount was received from this city. The course of trade is rapidly bringing it back, and it will hereafter be used to develope the resources of this section of the country, until another season requires the same circuit again.
