The news from Philadelphia is of that startling character which gathe-s crowds at the corners of the streets - harrows up the savage feelings, if implanted in the breast, setting friend against friend, neighbor against neighbor, tilldiscord pervades every portion of society. The sensation produced here is the more deep, from the circumstance of the Rev. br. Moriarty being now in our city, He has been la- boring here for some weeks, attracting by kis greay loquence and power, crowds of people to hsten to church, his iiouse; his library, which spread like lightning through the city—is not at this moment, 12 o’clock, known to the Rev. The Reverend gentleman was seen to enter the church witha a cheerful smile upon his countenance ! thought it most prudent not to aisclose the fact of the utter destriction of all his earthly goods at ich a moment. canes There was no mail north of Baltimore to-day; consequently, but little is known of the extent to which the riot has run in Philadelphia. Some few papers ceached here by passengers; and from the nature of the intelligence, it is presumable that the state of things at Philadelphia interrupted the mail ‘The Herald will be anxiously looked for for some time to come, though it usually is the only paper read here. ifty readers to one subscriber 1s a fair average; it is impossible to get at it at the reading rooms, bar rooms, ec. It is the same everywhere South and West, where I have recently been. If ‘our friends of the nowmerer press would work a fitte harder, and make their papers better, instead of charging so much for their private characters, would it not be better forthem? And the *Cheva- lier !? Is he visible to the naked eye? His letters have produced a great deal of merriment here. Can ‘on not give a portrait of him ashe isnowt We have all seen the picture of what he is likely to be- come. Agreat ‘Annexation Meeting” is to come off the coming week. General Hamilton is here, and will probably take a part in the proceedings. He and his friends are deeply interested pecuniarily in the fate of Texas. The Cienaral’s star would rise again, should this project of annexation succeed. Business is dull, The revulsion in the cotton market operates pretty severely here upon the prospects of trade. In haa, yours, &e. Privapvetruia Riors —We take the following from the Philadelphia Chronicle of yesterday :— ‘The city still remains m a perfect state of quietude, without the slightest probability of any renewed acts of outrege. A guard is still kept round the Catholic Churches, but the main body of the volunteers are in the Arsenal ‘The armed and unermed citizens of the differ- ent wards have discontinued patrolling the streets. There was no truth in the report that a soldier had been fired at while on duty at St. Phillips Church en ‘Tuesday night. ‘The General Orders of last night, merely embrace the disposal of the troups, and the protection of all the differ. ent points in the city and county, ‘The orders are strictly private.
