Al interests connected, with manufacturing are in the best possible spirits and coni:ion at thia time After some weeks of suspente Congress has acted in a manner the most favorable to capitaliate eng: cetton ant woollen mills. With these numerous additional mills to our already large manufacturing power, we shall soon beable to compete most enccessfully with the manufactures in all ports of the world number of mills in this country, will produce a competi: tion among ourselves of sutticient strength to bring down prices to a lower point than they have ever reached here, and this alone will be a powerful means of sup- planting the English in the China and South American markets | Onr shipments thither are already on a large scale, but with our fresh facilities, the trade will receive an impuls that nothing can stop. Tn the present aspect of affairs manufactures are not to be confined to any particular section—New England for instance—but will spread over the whole Union. They will be at the south as well as at the north. Corn Trade. There ia not a Jarge business doing inthis market. Of flour we have a large stock. An unusually large quantity has been shipped thence East this season, and buyers there seemed inclined to hold off; indeed there has not been half the activity in this article there this season that there usu. ally is On the 11th inst., prices were, Wheat 7lc ; Oats 24 to 26e ; Corn 44c ; Barley 40 to 62c ; Flaxseed $1 ; Flour retail, $4,25, wholesale $4.13. In the twenty-four flouring mills at Rochester, contain- ing 108 run of ‘stones, there were consumed in’ 1843 the enormous quantity of 1,715,072 bushels of wheat, and 330,- 682 barrels of flour were manufactured. ‘There was very little demand for Howard street Flour in Baltimore on the 13th inst. and the transactions conti- nue small. Holders of fresh growud parcels generally ask $4.62}. A sale was made on Saturday at $4 563. We hear of no sales of City Mills Flour. Holders ask $5, but would probably sell at a fraction less. Onur accounts from Buffalo are to the 13th inst, and state that that was a blue day in breadstuffs, A few millers only desired to purchase wheat, and those at such a reduction the market seemed as closed entirely. A few sales had taken place and some 10,000 bush had perhaps changed hands, but the transaction were so clogged with contingencies that we forbear to give quo- tations. ‘The rate ranged from 83 te 87c, ‘Tho difference in price seemed to be governed much by_ the facilities to ship down thecanal. We quote Western No. 1 Lard, in kegs, at 6} cents, and in barrels at 6} cents with only small transactions, ‘The extensive conversion of Lard into Oil and Candles, has prevented, in agreat degree, the fluctuations of the Cincinnati Pork trude, and given to ft a wholesome steadi- ness. Foreign Markets. Burnos Aynes, March 9-—Our market is at this moment suffering severely from the effects of a monetary crisis, which hax produced a suspension of payment by severni respectable mercantile honses, beth national and foreign The cause to which this state of things is, we believe, mainly att last year to dering the ¢ ng medium insufficient to satisfy the exigencies of the active and extensive business carried ‘on, as is evidenced by the high rate of interest paid for mon , notwithstanding the large supply of specie ntly received from abroad, and which was em vioyed in a considerable number of transactions. The paper money in circulation throughont the vast territory of Buenos Ayres ix equivalent to little more than | 3.000.000 of hard dollars; a sum which, if in ordinary times, was found barely adequate for the purposes of com: merce, mnst be allowed at present to fall short of what is required for a greatly enlarged ephere of operations. It hax been suggested that as a measure ot relief the mint might empowered to discount bills to a certain amount, at a meverate interest ; and that this cou!d be done without in the least affecting the credit of the paper money, or increasing the responsibilities of the State, by conferring on the mint the same privilege as the Custom House in the collection of bills. We do not know how far advisable such a measure may be ; but if it were all practicable, without any serious detriment to any of the paramount interests of the State, we think it would prove highly beneficial, retrieving trade from its present stagnation, and enabling the embarrassed honses to fulfil their obligations towards their creditors without ruinous sacrifices. Our accounts from Washington are very amu- sing. The locofoco politicians there are all going mad, and they are setting all others mad. The Texas fever is raging terribly in the democratic party. John Jones, of the « Madisonian,” is foam- ing at the mouth for tear that Captain Tyler should be “shaved,” as he calls it, by the ‘leven-penny hour mea in Texas. On the other hand, the “old lion” of the Hermitage begins to lash his sides and give agrowl. Here isan extract of « letter from General Jackson, dated Heamitaoe, May 3, 1044. oo. “The Senator who votes against the ratification of the Treaty must be a traitor to the best interests of our be- loved country, whatever pretext he may attempt to shield a ae ANDREW JACKSON, Our correspondent says that the above is a genu- ine extract from a letter written to a member of Congress, and reoeived there on Monday. It re- fers to the Texas Treaty. Here is another genu- ine roar of the “old lion.” To rH» Eprrons or tH Nasuvitte Usion :— GrxtLEmen :—My attention has been called to various newspaper articles referring to a letter said to have been written by me to Gen. Hamilton, recanting the cl of bargain made against Mr. Clay when he voted for Mr. | Adams in 1825. ‘To put an end to all such rumors, I feel it to be due to myself to state, that | have no recollection of ever hav- ing written such a lett do not believe there is a letter trom me to Gener milton, or any one else, that will bear such a construction. Of the charges brought uinst both Mr. Adams and Mr. Clay at that time, I form- ed my opinion as the country at large did—from facts and circumstances that were indisputable and conch I may add that this opinion has undergone nochs If General Hamilton, or any one else, hasa letter from me on this subject, which the friends of Mr. Clay desire to be made public, all they have to do is to apply to him for it. As for myself, | have no secrets, and donot fear the publication of all that | have ever written on this or any other subject. ANDREW JACKSON. Henwyraan, May 3, 1844, Again we must say that the divisions in the de- mocratic party make them all mad and fit for the mad house. The whigs are all Jaughing and get- ting fat. So they may. ‘Washington. {Correspondence of the Herald.) Wasnincton, May 14, 1844. The rumors are again rife this mornil will be sent to the four winds of heaven, that Thomas H. Benton will take the stump in Missou- ri for Henry Clay. (Fudge once.] Although there is a general expectation that Mr. Benton may do some desperate act, yet it is but justice to him that the public should entertain the strongest possi- ble doubts of such a course being taken by Mz. Benton. [Fudge twice.] Tell it to the marines, but dont believe it, tll there is better evidence than rumor. [Fudge thrice ] Mr. Allen has just returned from Baltimore where he and others went to deliver, speeches, as you will probably ascertain from the Baltimore pa- pers. The conflict still rages violently between the Van Buren pros. and the Van Buren cons Victory remains doubtful. Possibly the Baltimore Con- vention may break upin a row. [No danger of that } You see we are likely to be a'l afloat in the matter of adjournment. [You are all mad in Washington, that’s flat.] Ss. B. Wasuinoton, 14th May, 1844. The Senate again continued for a long time in Executive Session to-day. It is no easy matter, since the censure passed upon Mr. Tappan, to as certain what is done in these days in Executive Session, What I now tell you, however, you may rely upon. Benton, Allen & Co. are much seften- ed in their hostility to the treaty. They are afraid of the consequences. I meant to have said that the treaty was,the subject of discussion in Execu- tive Session. Among the whigs there is a great anxiety to hasten action upon it—and of course its rejection—as fast as can possibly be done consistently with propriety and seemliness. The messenger with returns from Mexico is expected to arrive about the 10th of June, The House amend- ed the Senator’s resolution to Scions on the seventeenth of June. This amendment of the House was strenuously opposed by Mr. Cave Johnson, and other friends of Mr. Van Bu- ren whe are wire-worked by Mr. Benton, whe an Buren men were beaten, and comes up in the Senate for their concurrence. Mr. Evans, with great pertinacity, insists on at once amending the amendment from the 17th to the 3d of June. This amendment, if carried, would have brought about an adjournment of Con- | gress before the messenger from Mexico would see the whigs are excessively afraid this messenger will return with such convincing preofs in favor of annexation, that the people wall by acclamation demavd of them to ratify the treaty. Therefore, before any such unfortunate contingency can oc- cur, the Whigs are determined to adjourn. And it is in this position of the question, that you see the reason why Senator Walker to-day opposed amend- he 17th to the 3d. One thing, however, is now settled upon—to take up and discuss the treaty without delay, so as to get through with it. They dare not reject it without discussion. Nor will the discussion be in open Senate. And here Benton & Co. have now changed front. The secret of this and the fact is, that such strong demonstrations are now daily coming in from the people in favor of annexation, that all the opposing Senators have concluded that | it is much safer tor them to talk out of hearing of the people. And as they report their own speeches, | which will not be done for sometime, they can, | when they come to publish them, write them out then State of the dear people’s pulse.— ing along as nearly as possible on the they wili be ready 1ojump either way, and any reasons most politic for their respective nd opinions. : 4 annot be concealed that this question of an- Thus k: It trans: | nexation is assuming a fearful and momentous im- ang | portance.
