This morning was bright and pleasant, and the man with the long nose and long-tailed horse took advantage of it to exhibit his paces on the Avenue —and ludicrous beyond description was his appear- ance; for, by checking the rein one side and apply- ing the spur on the opposite side, he imparts to his horse a crab-like motion, which enables him to | turn what the players call his three-quarter face to (the pedestrians on the side-walk, who he seems toconsider) his audience. He progresses like a ship striving against a strong tide-way, as, with a fight | wind a very little abaft the beam, she forges slowly ahead. The second Assembly came off on the 6th; and, although not as crowded as the first, yet the dancers were as numerous as could be conveniently accom- modated. The viands and wines were, as usual, of the best quality, and were served up in the most ad- mirable manner. The adies were in fine feather ! On the 8th, the lady of the French Minister, M Fagect, entertained her friends in that delightful etherial manner almost peculiar to the chival- rous and polite people of whom her husb ‘nd is the honored representative. About twelve o'clock, one of the elder ladies took Madame Pagesi’s arm, for the purpose of re- tiring to the dressing-room for a moment. In an instant it was understood through the crowd that supper was ready, and, two by two, with stately siep, the company followed their hostess, leading, as they supposed, to the supper-room. Alas! she led to the dressing-room. Supper there was none— to return to the saloon would have been ungrace- ful—they went home. Jt seems the mistake arose from the use, of the foreign. attachés, of the future for th tense 2 Was describing & supper hi to order at Very’s on his returnto Paris. ‘The sup- per was “in futuro.” His listener mistook the tense—she thought it was “in presenté.” On the 18th the third levee washeld, The execu- tive mansion was crowded with ladies and gen- tlemen, of all shades ot complexion, and all the varieties of political opiniou, from the fairest daughters of the Anglo-Saxon race, to the Mexican brunette, with her soft guzelle-like eyes—from the locofoco, who believes in his soul that the tree of liberty only bears fruit when its roots are moisten- ed with the blood of aristocrats, to the old tederal- ist, who is day by day more and more confirmed in ‘the opinion that in a strong central government ‘} only is there auy safety—that beauty, virme, and knowledge, are possessed by his party alone, and that the inob, as he calls the people, must be kept under, The President had finished the reception of the company, aad was surrounded by a group of friends in the East Room, where the dancing had com- menced, when Captain Stockton entered, accom- panied by several of his oflicers. To say ‘that the President received Captain Stockton with great courtesy, will but poorly express the noble feelings that illumined the countenance of honest John Tyler when he grasped the hand of the man, \.ho in_good report and evil report, had justified hie course, and defended bis fair fame. And, while 1 am upon the subject of Captain Stockton, I will relate an anecdote elucidating his judgment and sound common se: Mr. Potter, the father-in-law of Captain Stockton, was the largest stockholder in the United States Bank during Mr. Biddle's palmy days. At his re- quest, Captain nifty called st the banking house, and stated his desire to be intatioadl of the then state of the aflairs of the Bank. The Presi- dent and Cashiers, (of the latter there were some half dozen,) with the greatest apparent frankness, | opened their books to the i inspection, and answerea L the qnestions of the Captain. When he left, they felt assured that they had completely blinded him as to the true situation of their affairs. Mark the sequel. The next week Mr. Potter sold out stock to near the amount of a million of dollars at forty Pe 1 cent above par, reserving only a little nest egg of $25,000. Itis unnecessary to suy his $25,000 was, but is not. On the Ith instant, Mrs. Wickliffe gave her se- cond party for the season, and, as usual with the entertainments of the inembers of the cabinet, the crowd was tremendous. The graphic account in the Herald of the meet- ing held by the New York Bar, to save the Presi {ent the trouble of selecting a Judge of the Su- preme Court, in place of the late Judge Thompson, has excited much attention here. If Fessenden hac entered the room a little sooner, he (being sorely «flicted with the cacathes loquendi,) would have urged the wonderful claims of that fourth, or fifth class lawyer, his partner, Hiram Ketchum, who, it seems, Was not atthe meeting; or being preseni, exhibited, for the first time in his life, the self-de- nal, to forego an opportonity of talking abou himself. Oh, Tempora—oh, mores! that any sane man lives who could preter Hiram Ketchum to Hiram Walworth. There are those here, who see the fingerof the god like Daniel in this movement of your bar, ns well ny in the rejection of Mr. Spencer by the Senate, i: which, in his anxiety to pay his debts, (an uneasi- ness, by the way, to which he is not particularly snbject,) Mr. Webster has, probably, overpaid Mr. spencer, who wili, without unnecessar Hs lay, re- tora the balance. Your faithful inquiry into this matter will confer a favor on one of the people. Priee Two Cents. Mysteries or Frvancr—Tue Granp Trust Co. —We have had the “ Mysteries of Fata and they have been read and understood—and we have had the ‘* Mysteries of New York,” and most of them have seen the light of day; but of all the. mysteries at this present writing, the North American Trust and Banking Company is the most unreadable. When this institution went into the hands of the receiver, the stock was supposed; by those who knew something of its affairs, to be nearly or quite | valueless, the chaeanaae of its assets at that lime | not having been fully developed, and the accuracy of opinion on the subject open to some doubt; but after an incubation of nearly two years and a 1 half by the receiver, we are apprised by somebody through four several articles that have appeared, the \ first of which was published in the ** Herald,’ ” (shadowing forth the intrinsic value of the stock as being doubtless worth 35 per cent,) the two next in the “ Journal of Commerce” having refer- ence more particularly to the trusts, and the fourth in the * Courier and Enquirer,” § they all bear internal evidence of one paternity, that the poor stockholders have realy something to hope fort Now the aim and end oi these ingenuous and ho- nest articles have been to inflate the price of the stock, and thus invite the unwary and innocent ee invest their means in a worthless speculation the only inference that can be drawn by thos wio have a right to interpret the doings of others is, that somebody became a purchaser of the stock when it was nearly down to 0, and that that same somebody has made and is making a stalking horse of these high-priced articles to sell out and pocket his thousands at the expense of the gullibility ef the eredulous public! Truly may New York lay claim to being the pattern card of human nature in all its phases! But the recent brochures from our friend, David Leavitt, Esq , receiver, are delighttul specimens of light literature—pertectly unique—indeed they are historical novels of a class unexampled in their structure and design—wonderfully picturesque in description—remarkable for their dove-tailed in- genuity, and replete with the most varied and mar- velious \ncident; and his accompanying esenys on the modem science of repudiation are so clear and truthful, abounding as they do in the brightest scintillations of talen. genius and the purest es- sence of this moral philosophy, that they seem to be not only the honest reflection of a. virtuous mind, but the strength of their argument is so con- vincing, that one is almost inclined to waive his own views of equity towards others, end adopt in full this new faith, all its honore and rest his re- ward upon the generous opinion of an enlightened public! We had no idea before, that the receiver made any pretensions to scholastic atiainments beyond tioee popular and usetul branches of education usually aécocinated “readin, ritin, spellin and rithmetic.”” Nor had we any idea that the doctrine of repudiation bore any relation to him beyond merely discountenancing the extraordinary i abe tence of the general government, to collect a on lead! We know that gentlemen ve eae entertain various and conflicting views in respect to what is due to our general parent. or any “ out- side barbarians,” and it may be that the successtul repudiator is the most virtuous Christian, pious man and estimable citizen, and worthy of. eSpecial praise and commendation. Now, as we live in an age of wonders, it is not extravagant to assert that the atmosphere of Wall street possesses a vitality extremely taking, and that it is strongly unctured with greatness, leading some men to an elevation beyond their desires; but then we know that “some men are born great—some acquire great. ness, and some have greatness thrust ujon them.” We have been accused of being a vain-glorious people and fond of descanti.g in ambitious terms of what we are and what we shall be. We must acknowledge, however, that we have arrived ata state of perfection in political economy unprece- dented—that New York is a magical city, per se, the state isan empire of the noblest elements, (fi- nanciering particularly,) the whole United States is the country, and we are the most wonderful cis- atlantic people on the continent, Guost or tur Great Trust Co. This is a specimen of a variety of articles which we have recently received, endeavoring to blow up David Leavitt, the receiver of the late exploded North American Trust Co., and by that stale trick to change the issue in the controversy before the public. It is utterly futile. In that awfel exposi- tion Mr. Leavitt has but done his duty—the public will esteem him for it—nor can the late managers of that company turn aside the public feeling from their astounding and startling conduct. Indeed the report of the receiver is only the beginning of these Wall street developments. More terrible disclosures are yet to come. Only wait a little while. In the meantime we repeat that President Tyler should look into that matter in connection with the postmaster of this city, Something must be done.
