The stock market has not been the least affected by the European advices. Stocks are moving up and down with- out any particular cause. The sales to-day were quite moderate, showing but little activity among the brokers. In this market the effect will be to create large speculations, and efforts to hold for farther advices. This will bring the city banks into the market, and they will be called on very ex" tensivelyfor loans and discounts. Pric@s will adyance more rapidly here than in Liverpool, although a greater im- provement is anticipated there before the departure of the next steamer than has yet taken place. A very heavy demand wiJl come from the manufacturing districts of Great Britain for cotton the approaching season. The present stocks in those sections are small, and the consump: tion is steadily increasing. This consumption is a legiti- mate business, and will tend to the improvement of prices more thoroughlythan the most extensive speculations. The movements of the Bank of England, as regards the con” traction of the circulation, are made principally for the purpore of preventing speculation, and to preserve low It is impossible for that insti. tution to achieve this obyect, in the face of a reduced crop in this country, with our ability to hold to the last mo- ment, and with an additional demand for consumption in the manufacturing districts of its own country. Every shrewd operator in cotton in this country, would rather have his stock im the Liverpool market, than in any of our ports, and in consequence of this, there will more cotton go forward within a week after the European advices reach the southern ports, than has been before shipped ‘on in 20—'d Brainard, Noonan, St John, NB “ remen Davannan, Jan 18-~ _ Z Br] Mackie, Newry, of and from arbor, and was comp: lied to cut away both masts to get off; she makes bat lit- IMPORTANT ARRANGEMENT.—Original zines at ‘The subscribers having com- ieted their arrangements with the publishers in England prices for the raw material. les of American stocks in the London market just previous to the departure of the steamer on the 4th inst., were very limited at prices comparing favorable with sales made at the leaving of the steamer of the oth ultimo Ohio 6’s were in more demand than any other description Quotations ror AM Wena Stocxs 1x Lonpon. ee. 5. ‘The most important question that agitates the public political mind, at present, is the tariff and the prospect of any alterations during this session of Congre Dutfie was to have been replied to by Senator Maine, after which, the question would be taken and acted In an article a few days since, we conclusively show ed the result and effect of the existing and all past tariffs, and that a revenue duty as contended for by the Senatur from South Carolina would give the government greater receipts from customs, than the present toriff will pro- duce, under the most prosperous condition of the foreign trade of the country. The manufacturing classes have, in fact, so little interest in the provisions of the tariff laws, that the government should turn their attention to a revo- lation that will produce the great the government have to do with thi The object of this law is revenue, and to that should it be confined. It is impossible to grant the same protection to ill interests equally throughout the country, even had Congress the legislative power, and it is fortunate the pe- chod has arrived that this necessity no longer exis has been produced by two great causes—the first and most powerful ia the state of the currency the second is the foot- hold obtalned bylthe manufactures and the stability of their business, arising principally from the first cause. The revolution in bank capital, and paper circulation and the contraction of the paper currency, led to the present condition of the trade, manufactures and commercial movements of the Union. Quotations for many articles included in the above comparative table, already show an improvement on those of 1839, and prices for manufactured goods are higher at the present time, in proportion to the coat of the raw material, than they were five years since, during the height of the mania for speculation. They are also high taking into consideration, the increased value of money, and the reduced state of paper currency The ma nufacturers, we daily see, are declaring very large divi- dends, which is good evidence that they are doing a very profitable business. ‘They are able to pay as liberal wages as ever they did, and the number and extent of the esta- blishments are constantly increasing. The compromise act was in force—but near its most reduced rate—at the date of our first quotation. This shows that it was the state of the currency, and nothing else, that sustained prices, It also shows provisions, particularly, were very high. There is at present a greater equality in quota- tions than at any time within the period above referred to, By the above statement, we see that under a high tarifi'| 2 and a sound currency, prices for the principal staple arti- cles are quoted lower than those that ruled under an ex- panded paper currency and a low tariff, which settles the doctrine that the currency controls all commercial and manufacturing movements. The Chancellor of the State of Mississippi has decided in favor of the validity ofthe assignment made by the Com mercial and Railroad Bank of Vicksburg. It is said to be amatter of doubt whether the claims of the United States: Bank will stand legal investigation.
