They were compelled to let every pound of their cotton go, as soon as picked, at the ruling price, for value received twelve months previous So long as that condition of the producers existed, so long prices were kept below a fair point. So long as the south ern country was cursed with thousands of miserable, swindling banks, the planters of that section were rode over rough shod, and their substance sucked out of them by these blood-thirsty leeches. The few that still exist in that section are so crippled that they are almost harmless but they should be avoided as much,as possible. The faci; lities afforded the cotton grower to keep his crop until general thing, will havea very good effect. There has more cotton been received at New Orleans the present year on planter’s account, in propor- tion to the crop, than ever before, and the correct cause of the deficiency in the total receipts at all the southern ports, compared with last year, is the ability of the planter to hold his crop for further advices. Cotton is accu- mulating in that port, whereas last year, notwithstanding the stock on hand was smallerthan this, the receipts were about sixty thousand bales more, showing that the crop went forward more rapidly. This condition of prices must have a great influence on the movements of this importan staple. The stock of American cotton on hand in Liver pool the Ist of December, was 451,000 bales against 233,000 For some time previous to the departure of the Hibernia on the Sth inst., the daily sales in Liverpool reached from 3 to 4000 bales, amounting to full 20,000 bales weekly, making the sales at that rate, from that date to January Ist, 80,000 bales, which deducted from the stock on, hand would leave 371,000 bales. This is estimated without allowing for receipts, which, for that period, would be so trifling that the result would vary but a fraction from that given. The manufacturers of Great Britain have taken for consumption this year 203,750 bales more than they did last year.
