o3 De- A Gawrent Bi Roavs Caveut.—The Rochester De- mocrat says:—John Fredenck H. Cohen, portrait painter, late of Toronto, was arrested a day or two ago in ‘Buffalo and brought to this place, to await his trial op a charge of larceny. This person appears to be one of those g cate! loaters who often pass undetected im society. Some Ui me last summer be attempted to elope from Toronte with tu e Wife of @ merchant of that city, named Craig.” He took Mrs, Craig's servant maid, and came to this city, She was expected to follow, but was detected on boerd the steamboat with most of ker husband's valuables, and sent back. Cohen having lost the mistress, determined to so- Mace himelf with the servant, He socordingly took lode ings at a boarding house, on Stone street, when out of ash incited the girl to steal money and othar articles from the keeper of the house. Among the money was a 1um- ber of spurious bills. A short time ago he left this city and located himself in Buffalo. After his departure the girl, in attempting to trade with the spurious money, led to the detection of the real rogue. It appears that he di- vided the “spoils” with har, » giving her the worthles bills and keeping the good for ‘own use. A bill of indict- ment having been found dearth Johen, oficer Wilkinson started for Buffalo to arrest him. He could obtain no clue to the residence of the gentleman, but finding that his por trait. which hung at a house where he formerly boarded, Was granished with a fine pair of whiskers and an impe- rial, he watched in the streets until the gallant passed, on his morning walk, and politely invited him to accompany him to this pl vhich he did, rather reluctantly, aud is now comfortably lodgedon theisland. So much for whis- kers. Curious Cracumstance——Resuscrration.—A young lady belonging to a Jewish family in this city died on Tuesday of a nervous disease, and yesterday her friends started with her remains for interment. Ac- cording to a Jewish custom, the body is taken to the grave yard in a square box, in the same covering in Which the deceased person has expired, and there, in a house appropriated for that purpose, the female friends of the family unrobe the body, wash it with cold water, and anoint it jor its last resting place. While performing this ancient custom upon the body of this supposed inanimate corpse,a healthful warmth evaporated from it,and evident signs of life became manifest ; the fact was announced by the ladies, physicians were set for, and the sorrowful cer- tainty of death, which overshadowed the countenances of friends, gave place toa gleam of hope. On the arrival of the physicians the certainty of her being alive was estab- lished, and means taken to fan the spark into health, in which we earnestly hope they will succeed. Every per- son who reads this circumstance will exclaim, “ How providential that she was a Jewess !” How awful would ave been the reverse! ‘This fact should caution the pub- lic against hasty burials. The body never becomes offen sive, nor is death certain, until that unerring sign of a purple tinge upon the belly is fully apparent—so says an eminent professor.—St. Lowis Rep. Dec. 7. Suockinc Tracepy.—A tragedy was enacted on Saturday afternoon, about eight miles from Kings. ton. A man,who called himself Morgan Hamilton Giffen, shot his wife, (formerly the widow Adzit,) and afterwards shot himself’ ‘The ball entered her breast, and lodged in her back, near the spine. Sl alive when last heard from, and there is hope she may recover. He married the old lady about twelve months ago, but they lived unhap- pily together ; and on Saturday he told her to pack his things, as he was going to leave her. She did so, when he culled her into the room, where he stood with two pis- tolx iu his hands. On seeing them she hesitated, but he went upto her, presented the pistol at her breast, and fired. She ran outof the house shouting murder, and soon fell on her face, when she was picked up by two men, Who carried her intoa house near by, and ou their going to search for Giffen, they found him lying under the table in hisown house, dead, the ball having gone through his heart. He was an American, and itis sup- posed that the name he went by wasan assumed name, and that he had been an inmate of some penitentiary in the States, for one of his hands was branded, and part of ‘one of his ears cut off.—Kingston, Canada, Herald, Dec. 12 Crime ap Deatn.—Four years ago, a fellow by, the name of TheodoregWalker, then aged 18 years, enticed from her friends at Cold C: reek, Allegany county, a girl by the name of Louisa Johnson, aged 13 years. ‘The couple came to the city, and after remaining a few days, proceeded to Buflalo, trom which place the; Canada, and returned again to this city in May or June Jast. During this time, they lived together as man and wife, though not married, Since their last residence here, they haye lived in Daniel’s Block, having become fit in: maies of that den of pollution and moral death. For rea- sons not known, Louisa took a large dose of Jaudanum on ‘Tuesday evening last, soon after which she retired to bed, foliowed by her paramour, who, between Ll,and 12 o'clock, ‘was aroused by the death struggles of the lost girl. She died im about two hours. Coroner Thompson held an in- quest on her body on Wednesday. The jury returned the verdict, that "The deceased came to her death by some narcotic poison furnished by ‘Theodore Walker, her destroyer.”—Koch. Dem. Darina Artemrr aT Roprery rn ALBaNy.—Last evening, the residence of Samuel Wait, was en- tered by two burglars, one white and the other a black man. ‘There was no person in the house at thetime but a maid servant. Going to the front door to lock it, she dir- covered @ black man inthe hall. “In reply to her question * What do you want? he answered “bread,” and on being told that there was nothing for him, he said there was and he must haveit. The girl, being alarmed, screamed for help; at this the fellow caught hold of the seryaut, and threatened to beat out her brains if she made ny more noise. Wortunately Gaylor Sheldon chanced to pass along in the street, and hearing the clamor, stepped up to the dvor, and discovering the other man under the stoop, seized him, and demanded what he was about. The fellow inside, hearing Mr. 8.’s voice, came gut of the house, and his companion getting clear at the same time, took to their heels und escaped. ‘The girl, whose storn to fragments in her struggle with the ruf- k to-day from the fright and rude treatment she Albany.
