McKay, are remarkably well executed, but the bills may very easily be detected, from the fact thut they are all (such as have been seen) dated 1843, whilst the bank has no bills of that denomination dated in this year. The vignette also (a train of railway cars) is one which is not borne by any of the genuine bills of the bank. The Commissioners that investigated the branch of the State Bank, at Clarksville, Tennessee, report the bad debts of that branch over $44,000, of which about $20,000 may be recovered. The Planters’ and, Merchants’ Bank, of Alabama has taken into consideration the propriety of petitioning the Legislature, to authorise a postponement of the sale of real estate belonging to the bank. It is thought that by defering the sale until next season, the interest of the bank will be greatly promoted. The bank is required to sell all its real estate before the first of April next, prior to closing} its business. Alabama State funds have im- proved very rapidly within aweek, both in this city and Mobile. The present rate in both places is 6 a5} per cent. In the interior of Alabama they pass at par for oll the productions of the country, but in the city of Mobile the only place in the State, they are at a discount. The declared amount of specie received at New Orleans for the season, up to the 7th instant, is $2,154,147, The actual amount is much larger. Doubloons, imported in contraband from Mexico and Cuba, are not always re- ported at the custom house in New Orleans. Among the importations there is a large amount in light sovereigns. ‘These are bought up in this city at $4 $2, and sold at New Orleans for $4 85, which will nearly pay charges of transportation. From New Orleans they go into the in- terior of Mississippi, where they pass for $4 87} a $4 90; even at that premium they are safer and better than a worthless paper currency, or anything in the shape of bank issues, As the deficiency in the revenue is annually increasing, and the public debt large, it is all-important that the reme* dy should be speedy and thorough. The imports for se. veral years past have been small, and for some years to come the amount will be comparatively limited, and the revenue from this source below a previous average, under the present policy of the government:— Imports, pistiNeuisHine DuTIABLE AND UsputiasLe Men- CHANDISE, WITH aversc® Rate or Duty ayn vet Re- cetrrs or Duties, ror Nive Yrans. The value of imports entered free, in five years out of the past nine, exceeds the amount paying duties, This is the grand cause of the deficiency in the revenue from customs. Congress must turn their attention to this point in the tariff laws, and by placing a moderate duty on nearly all imports, incidentally protect- ing the most important interests of the country, the re. ceipts into the treasury will be vastly improved, and there will not be a continual demand for alterations and modifi cations. The line should be drawn so as to divide the ex- tremes of both the political parties of the day as near as possible. The true course is a moderate, medium policy The principal object should be revenue, with the necessa- ry regard for our own interests, The regulation of a tariff scale would undoubtedly be met with many obstructions, and should be gradually perfected. All evils require gradual extinction. The compromise act was a wise one, It was the only alternative at the time; it corrected great abuses gently; it destroyed no local interests; and by de ‘ou my testimony. The proportion of free imports to those dutiable has been so great as to prevent a moderate scale of duties on merchandize paying a dutycreating a sufficient revenue to meet ‘wants of government, In 1836, total imports reached $199,990,000, at an average duty of thirty per cent on the dutiable portion, which only netted a revenue from that source; for the year, of $26,013,000, whereas a duty of thirteen percent on the groas tions would have netted the same amount of importa-| ) revenue. ‘This places the argument in a true light, and settles the principle on which we should uct. ‘The existing tariff is very defective; it was passed in great haste, and many parts of it give just cause for complaint. We require no extreme protection, neither do we require a prohibitory duty, in a single instance. Whatever local prejudice may require, or party measures dictate, they must be abandoned for the general good. ‘The bane of our institutions is the virulence of political principles; whatever aparty may propose, be it or woe, if the requisite strength and influence is for weal at hand, the effect is asecondary consideration. Laws regulating the tariff'of a country cannot be touched tooc arefully. Of all laws these require permanency and stability; party feelings should never be allowed to interfere or influence legislators in adopting a scale of duties, that have so pow- erful an effect on the prosperity of a people, when justly balanced and of equal burthen on all parts of the Union, Old Stock Exchange, Weekly Report of Interments In the City and County ot New York, from the 9th day of Dec. to the 16th day of Dec 13,05 38 Men ; 21 Women ; 30 Bo: 27 Gitls.
