Verdict m the Homicide Case—Bank Directors— U.S. Steam Frigate Princeton—Tippling House Cases—Theatricals—A Tailor in Trouble—Fune- ral of F. R. Hassler—-Episcopalian Church Almanac—Business. James Gorpon Benner, Esq.— Dear Sin— athe Jury in the case of the colored man William Thomas, alias Conally, indicted for the murder of James Brister, were charged last evening in the most impartial manner by Judge King, and retired at 10 o’clock to deliberate upon their verdict.— They came into Court this morning at 12 o’clock, and returned a verdict of ‘Guilty of murder in the Second Degree.” The punishment for the offence is imprisonment in the Eastern Penitentiary for a term not exceeding twenty years nor less than six years, 1 am enabled to-day, to give you the names of the gentlemen elected’ drectors’ of the Souihwark Bank, thereby completing the list of the directors of all the banks, at xp. elections were held un- der their charter on Monday. The following were elected for the Southwark Bank, to wit:— ‘Thomas Sparks, Lewis Clark, John Baker, Samuel Castner, Peter Williamson, Walter Thompson, Louis Roberts, Benjamin Tevis, Edward C. Wright, James Spencer, John C. Kartsher, D. Henry Flickwir, and Ro- bert Clark. aie _ The United States steam-frigate Princeton, hay- ing been fitted for sea, will be moored off Walnut street wharf to-morrow and for several days subse- quently, to afford our citizens a favorable opportu- nity of visiting her. The gentlemanly and gallant Captain R.. F. Stockton, will provide’ a steamboat gratutiously to put those desirous of examining her on board, © This distinguished officer will merit and receive the decided approbation of all who appre- ciate the politeness of motive that induced this popular move. : After the rendition of the verdict in the ho- micide case, the Court of Quarter Sessions, before Judges Campbell and Parsons, commence the trial of the ppling house indictments, and re- turned verdicts of not guilty against two of those indicted, adjudging the county to pay the costs. The National was filled again lest evening, the attraction being tbe personation of a Yankee cha- racter by Silsbee, and the popular and_ successful drama of the “Mysteries of Paria which has had & most unprecedented run, and will be played for the last time to-morrow (Friday) night. The Italian Opera TeCUDs i regret to say, had another bad house at the Chestnut last night. They conclude here this week, the patronage tendered being insufficient to induce them to extend their engagement, On to-morrow evening Booth will appear at this house “for one night only,” on his way to the South, returning, however, on Monday, with Wallack, they being ‘engaged to appear to- ether next week at the Chestnut street Theatre.— hope they will be successful in revivifying the en- ervated fortunes of this house. Howe’s equestrian troupe at the Walnut streeet, continue to draw fair houses, the vgriety given by the constant change of performance ‘rendermg this company very popular. Great preparations are being made for the suc- Seeetal mrodiption of the new grand spectacle of “The King of the Mist,” and IT am told it will ex- ceed in gorgeous splendor any thing ever brought out by the successful and enterprising Wemyss, whose ability in the melo-dramatic line is prover- bial. Our ie talented townsmon, Conner, is to be the King of the Mist, which is of itself enough to secure its success. It will be produced on Monday night at the National. ’ll look in and faithfully chronicle all that my, be said about it. A knight of the cabbage and_ shears was yester- day committed by Alderman Rees for obtaining goods under false pretences. Having succeeded in procuring from various peisons a large quantity of clothes to be made up, he made a @ishonest dispo- sition of them, by, to use a familiar phrase, ‘* put- ting them Ba the spout.” He will reap the reward of his folly by a residence at Cherry Hill. . While f write, the funeral of Hassler, the super- intendent of the U,S. coast survey, and the con- structor of the U. S. standards of weights and mmeasures, is passing up Chestnut street; it is attend- ed by a long concourse of carri: es, and as there ment in State stocks; stocks of those States, too, that are the most rabid repudiators. English capitalists were eager to seize the slightest favorable report from this country. The speech of Mr, Webster had a more favorable influence across the Atlantic than it had here. The revolution in public opinion, in this country, on the subject of repudia- tion, has been so great that individuals interested have taken the flatt8ring unction to their souls, that as all the defaulting States could pay if disposed, they would, ‘The late election in Mississippi will have a great moral effect ; it is the first voice of the people through the ballot box. The anti-bond paying candidate for Governor, is probably elected; and this event will have a great influence in the legislatures of other States during the approaching winter. ‘The fact will go to Europe, and create a reaction in confi- dence, that will defeat all the endeavors of the State com- missioners that have lately been made to redeem their liabi- lities. In the present state of our credit abroad, holders of stock are very sensitive; and a fact, like the one above given, willdestroy what little faith they had left in our good intentions. The loan to Illinois, that has been so long under negotiation, yet stands on very precarious ground. Notwithstanding the document, containing the terms, has been signed by Messrs. Hope and Co., Messrs. Baring & Co., Messrs. Magniac, Jardine & Co., and the Rothschild’s, there still seems to be considerable doubt whether the negotiations will be followed by any practical results, Only two signatures, besides those of the firms above named, have been obtained, although the stock is held by many individuals. The measures adopted by those who have signed—the complete want of confidence in the statements of the Commissioners—the sending out an agent and engineer—all show what little faith they have in re- publican credit or integrity Another discovery has lately been "made, the effect of which will be confined to the limits of our own country ; but it will tend to ruin the credit of the State concerned abroad. ‘The legislature of Ohio authorised the Fund Commissioners to negotiate a loan in this city, for $1,500,000, at 7 per cent, to pay off'the domeatic creditors of the State, Estimates of the amount due were made by the Board of Public Works, and in au- thorising the loan, the legislature made liberal allowances forcontingencies. It now appears that checks have been issued to the creditors, by the Board of Public Works, for an amount much larger than the appropriation. This adoption of power by these individuals to cover their own false movements, whether made through ignorance or de- sign, is another of the many acts of the people’s servants that have fastened upon them the galling epithets from other nations that affect this cqyntry at large. The ove" issue was for debts actually due ; but in the power to make the issue lays the danger. The amount is said to be quite large—reaching over $150,000. The State of Ohio will have to husband its resources, to maintain its credit at home. A French paper, after analysing the constitution of the United States of America, in a long article, suggests, that as none ofthe great powers of Europe think it expedient to take legal proceedings against the defaulting States of the American Union for the recovery ofthe debts due by them, fearing by such a proceeding to produce a crisis, that the only means by which the Union could be withdrawn from the humiliating position which it at present occupies, would be to induce some of the minor powers—(the Princi™ pality of Hesse Hombourg, for example)—to institute legal proceedings in the Supreme Court of the United States for the recovery of any part of the loans contracted by the States of the Union that remain unpaid. The position adopted by the States of this Union, in so boldly repudiating immense debts, is so modern a principle, that the honest powers of Europe, wish to test the strength of the plan by appealing to the only power their acquaintance with our constitution suggests. ‘The prices of stocks of repudiating States in this market are at present much higher than usual, in consequence of the abundance of money, and the spirit of speculation so general through Wall street. Their value has not in creased ; for not one} of them has shown an anxiety or disposition to pay; and we much doubt whether the legis- latures of those States, the deepest in trouble, have nerve enough to pass the necessary laws required to recover their former position. States acknowledging their are none walking, I presume the destination of the okt is Laurel Hill. é ei The Episcopalians here complain greatly of the Church Almenac,” published in your ciiy, or at least of the style in which it has been got up. They suggest that a good edition may be printed at a raised price, large size, white paper, a rivulet of ial through a meadow of margin. The Worcester Company lately sold those bonds, at par, without endorsement. ‘This loan ‘was to enable the Norwich Company to extend their road to deep water, which will make a conveyance from New York to Boston over that road much more convenient than before this improvement. The above sale, made without recourse to the parties disposing of the bonds, shows that the standing of the Norwich Company is becoming good, and its credit established. The stock is rapidly rising in this market, and the condition of the Company appears very prosperous. The receipts and expenses up to Nov. 1, for 1842 and 1843, are as follows :— Receipts. E: enses. Holders of Union Bank bonds may consider their value settled ; they are a perma- nent investment, ‘The indebtedness of the State of Pennsylvania is so great, that the taxes of her population must be increased im. mensely to meet the interest on the present amount.— Great efforts will be made in her legislature, but the weight is already too heavy that lays about the necks of her people, and we have not the slightest hopes that it will be increased. With a debt larger than that of any other State in the Union, her population are more unwilling to be taxed. We see no chance forthe Rev. Sydney Smith, Specie is daily arriving at Mobile and New Orleans from the north, particularly from this city; $236,000 ar rived on the 13th inst. from New York, and $37,000 from St. !Louis; $200,000 arrived at Mobile, $110,000 of which was for the bank, and the balance for commercial firms. A large amount of the new issue of Treasury notes has been received in New Orleans from this city. The Cus_ tom House demand was nearly satisfied, but they were in request for northern remittances. The late law passed by the Legislature of Ten- nessee, to investigate the Bank of Tennessee and its branches, is very rigid; each branch has a setof commissioners, whose duties are confined to the branch. The law requires an immediate report, which must be very full, containing every detail neces, sary to give the public all the information necessary to give them acorrect insight into their condition. ‘This right.
