Witness continued.—There were $23,600 altogether ; the forgeries were paid on the Sist of August on ten dif- ferent banks; | have seen this red box before at Mrs. Sarah Hunter's, on Saturday the 9th of September, at 27: Divison street ; Mr. Palmer, of the Merchants’ Bank, was with me; Mrs. Hunter showed us the contents; there were $1950 in bills of the Seventh Ward Bank ; there were $24,950 of other bank notes, ‘Crantes H. Wittiamsox, a boy, called.—From the lat- ter end of June to the latter end of August, I boarded with Saunders at 68 Duane street; we occupied the same room; Ithink I have seen Ragge before ; I won't be certain ; | think I have seen him at the corner of Broadway and Du- ane street went into my room one night in a hurry and a person was setting at the table with Saunders ; Saunders said it was Ragge. ‘The Court ruled out this last answer.) itNess.—I think Ragge is the person that I saw with Saunders at the corner of the street ; I did not see the face of the person who was in our room with.Saunders ; I think I saw Ragge and Saunders together in Centre street once afterwards. Cross-examined,—Ragge has been in my store a dozen times at least; Tchanged the bill because it was bankable and I gave part uncurrent money in exchange; I hav seen aman named Otten with Ragge, but he does not look like Saunders. Mra. Sanatt Howren wae called, but. owing to her ex. treme indisposition, herfa(fidavit was read which confirmed the previous statements relative to the opening of the box containing the money. Mrs. Baxter, of Canal street, called.—Ragge and his and Saunders boarded with my mother last winter in Maiden lane; Ragge and his wife boarded with us in Canal street; onthe 6th of September last, he owed us $92; on the Sth of September, he paid $62; on the 7th, he paid $5, and on Saturday, the 9th, Mre Ragge paid The Grand Jury here came into Court, and having finished their business, were discharged. Wirxess continued.—Previous to paying these large amounts, they were in the habit of giving small sums; the delay of payment she said was occasioned by their not re- ittances from Demerara, which they expected ; he said he had an agency for the sale of cologne perfumery; when he paid me the $62, he told me to tell the landlord that he had not received it from Deme- rara, but he got it from a friend; he said he had received 5 bill enclosed in a letter from a friend, and T might as have it; T have heard of Saunders being at our house ; his visits were to me as well as to Ragge ; his visits were nothing more than were he first time that officer Kellinger called he Delahay—we ha‘ cight boarders on the 3ist of August — Rayge and his wife came to board with us in December last by the introduction of Mr. Seamen, the Bavarian annders had been boarding with us from the August previous; I cannot say whether Ragge was at dinner or tea on the lst of August; he was indisposed on that day this was the day of the Bnffalo hunt. He then advised me to go up in the Albany boats, and I could crossover to Boston in time to eseape by the Hi bernia the next day; | left in the evening boat for Albany, but did not arrive at Boston until the evening efter the Hibernia had left; | then took passage in the Luo Choo for New Orleans, where | was arrested by officer Clapp. I had purchased a wig tor adisguixe and a par of gicen spectacles; | saw Mr. Wilmerding at Boston the Saturday aiter | was arrested. ‘Crosaexamined by Mr. Granam —I shall be 17 on the the 17th of December next, have been in prison since the time I was b.ought on from Boston; on \ onday last I was first apprised of my being @ witness against hagge; | was first conversed with upon the subject by Mr. Wil g at Boston; nothing was aefinitely promised; said he would use his insiuence to get me clear; he said be wished to put the saddle on the right horse. Qvestion.—What did he say he intended to do with the horse after he had saddled him, said he would send him to Sing Sing, | believe, (laughter) I hed a conversation with Mr, Wil- merding the day that [ was exam here at the police. It was before I was examined; he held out pretty much the same inducements to get me clear as before, i 1 would become a witness; Mr Austen was present ina conversation with Mr. Wilinerding in my cell, but he took no part in it; Mr. Austen told me th« best course Leould pursue was to tell the whole truth; this was while the examination was going on; 1b re- fused to answer, and the clerk step) ut and called him in; he then made the remark, but held out no promises to me; this was on Wednesday; Mr, Wilmerding said that the prosecution had refused to make a state’s evidence of he said he had done all he could; I have had conver. , Mr. Warner, relative to my bein, w ne to plead guilty; he said he had entered gement with prosecution to make a witness of me; this was about three weeks ago; it Was before the commencement of the present term of this court; he said if [would plead guilty to one indictment this could be done; Mr. Warner told me that he had been present at a conversation between Mr. Edmonds and Mr. Austen, and the latter had asked the former if I could be sent to the House of Refuge, and Mr. Edmonds said | could. Q.—Did he how you could avoid the law relative to t being sent over 16? A—No, he did not. Reconver.—That is not the law--the court cannot send over 16, but the inspectors of the state prison could send under 17. Epwonps.—Yes, | can send him there if under 17. Grantam.—It is well that the counsel has that power as inspector. Wirwrss continued.—I did not meke this statement until after I saw Mr. Wilmerding in Boston; the story I told at the police office here, I intended to be the whole truth re- lative to this matter; the time he first_ commenced talking about robbing the banks was when Monroe Edwards was arrested; he first suggested the forgeries after this. —Who first suggested the plan of the forgeries on Austen, Wilmerding & Co. ? ‘A.—I do not remember prec sely, but I think I was the first to suggest it. 1 how mich casier would it beto obtain money in a large sum by forgeries than by robbery. { believe the names of Austen, Wilmerding & Co. were mentioned at this time, or shortly after. I remember that he was favorable to the scheme—the scheme waa that he should forge the signatures and fill up the checks. His wife was sometimes present at these conversations. | sometimes took the specimens that he hud written to my room at night, when J met him in the Park, and examined them. I sometimes looked at them by the light of the win- lows at the corner of the streets. The first and only time that T furnished Ragge with cancelled checks was before he left boarding in Maiden lane. I then gave him a bundle which I had taken from the counting house desk. They were kept by him in this box, at his house. I gave him $14,250, or about that sum, exclusive of the $2000 I gave him for my father. By Mr. Perce—Was Mrs. Ragge acquainted with your lesign of forging the checks, at the time they were forged? _ she wa Mr. Price here asked him to read a part of his testimony taken before the police. in which he said that he wished me not to tell his wile, after they had made up their minds to do it. Wirverss rend it, and explained it by saying that Ragge Id him so, because he said his wife would laugh at us. He said that Mrs, Ragge was present afterwards in Canal street at a conversation relative to the forgeries.
