Sunday—Nov. 19—6 P. M. The state of the money market during the past week has been very encouraging for all those engaged in spec- ulations, especially inthe stocks onthe advance at the Board of Brokers. The table given below about the Banke in this State, proves all tnat we have stated for the past month to be founded on fact. The loans of the banks totheir directors, and to the brokers of Wall street, amount to nearly a fifth of their total capitals. This pro- portion refers to the Banks of the State, many of which employ their resources in a legitimate manner, which makes the per cent of our city banks still larger in this description of loans. The capital of the twenty-three banks in this city is $23,490,290, nearly one-third of which is in the hands of the brokers, to use in the stock market. In consequence of this state of affairs, speculation is increasing in State securities and fancy stocks; prices must advance, for the immense amount used in this business must continue in it. The bullgand bears are securing the rich spoils thrown into. tigir hands, by the anxiety of the banks to make the most of their idle means. They must do this or rve—they must do this or their days are numbered—their very exis- ence depends upon it; their vitality laysin the perma nency of the present mania. ‘The R.,C. Fisher, from Martinique, brought $10,000 in specie. The valuable real estate situated in Philadelphia and vicinity, belonging to the Bank of the United States, will be sold, by order of the trustees, on the 2ist instant. ‘This is the last remnant of the monster that spread deso. Jation and misery over so large a surface; that created so many bankrupts, and [brought this great country to the brink of utter ruin, Bills of the Blackstone Bank, of Uxbridge, Mass., are in circulation, altered from threes to fifties ; also, ten dol+ lar bills of the Stilwater Canal Bank, of Orono, Me., altered to Newport Exchange Bank, R. I. A suit instituted by the Firemen’s Insurance Company of New Orleans, resulted in the decision that the stock- holders must pay the instalment, and could not abandon their stock and thus release themselves from liability. "This is a very judicious verdict, and if maintained in all parts of the country, would have a very great influence in inducing the stockholders of incorporated companies to Jook more carefully after their own interests, in keeping the affairs of the concern in which they are involved in a prosperous condition. ‘The report that the government deposits had been re- moved from the Philadelphia Bank to the Moyamensing Bank, is officially contradicted. ‘The treasury depart ment never intended so doing, and the report must have been put in circulation by some evil dixposed individual, who wished to materially injure the former institution ‘We have received from Albany the condensed statement of the condition of the Banks of the State of New York, on the first of November, made to the Comptroller, pursuant to the provisions of the act of April 18, 1813. ‘This statement docs not include the reports of the ‘Delaware and Hudson Canal Co. the Hamilton Bank, and the New York State Stock Security Bank, as they Were not received in time : Baxxs or te State or New Yon! 1843. The cireulation has increased but/a small per cent, and the amount of specie on hand has in- creased in like proportion. The loans are a trifle larger, but the deposits have decreased. ‘The circulation of the Ohio Banks has been gradually increasing since June, 1842, at which time it amounted to $1,314,633, From January, 1842 to June of the same year the circulation was reduced $3,273,878, and the number of Banks from 28 to 17. The present number is 10—two of which go out of existence the present year, The people of Ohio, upto the beginning of the year IS41, were con- trolled body and soul by the Banks of that State. ‘They depended on them, and consequently looked to them for aid, instead{of turning their attention to the resources within their power to place them permanently on a safe basis that no monied institution could shake. The revulsion that shook this country to its centre, destroyed the ruinous depend” ence on banks. Forthe want of these concerns, people were compelled to dig their wealth from the earth—to de_ vote their hands to some legitimate business; the cons quence of which is,that for the past the products of the soilare immensely greater in quantity than ever befoi The farmers of Ohio find theythrive much better without in_ corporated shaving shops. They find they have in secking the shadow, lost the substance, and sacrificed years of toil, under the delusion that speculation leads to great and sudden wealth, The citizens of Ohio are not alone this conclusion. Union has undergone a change that will greater effect in producing a firm esta perity, if adhered to, than all the thousand political hum- bugs of the day. As great as the reduction of the ban! capital of this country has been, it must be still @ we haye yet more than is wanted, Some of the Balt Banks talk about reducing their capitals, and on about winding up its business. The Ocean Bank of N: buryport, Mass., intend petitioning the legislature of that State, the coming winter, to reduce their capital stock one half, and if that should be refused, to surrender their churter and divide the entire capital. This is only a begin ning of what the Banks must come to, but we have great fears that before the end reached, they will make another tremendous effort to employ profitably what eapi- tal they have. ‘The merchants of every large city in the Union have become so independent of banks, under the new system of trade, that those institutions feel it of the utmost difficulty to employ their money. The commer cial communities are composed of different materials than used to constitute the controllers of trade, The revul" sion ruined all the old class, and the present set is made up of shrewd calculators that are satisfied with a gradual progress to wealth and independence. ‘The old system of credits having long since exploded, the merchants have been able to build upa business based on short credits and small profits. Commencing with small capitals, they have carefully increased their operations, as their re" sources enlarged, rigidly confining their movements to the limits of their own ability, instead of extending, in proportion to their amount of bank facilities within their control. In consequence of this state of things, the banks find little use for their immense capitals in the usual channels of trade. For the amount of business transacted in this country during the past year, there never was so trifling a dependence onthe banks. The banking capital of all the large cities particularly, is seeking after some method of employment. Itis at present almost exclusively confined to the operations in stocks, for the want of some other outlet. There is nothing else for this immense amount of money to act upon except cotton, and we are anxiously waiting the movements of that staple for the first symptoms of the effect from this cause. Look at the magnificent palaces in Wall street, then at the princely mansions of the presidents and cashiers in the upper part of the city ; look at the array of clerks, porters, agents, &c., and calculate the amount necessary for the support of all these individuals. The dead capital invested in all these costly buildings, would go a great way in the advancement of individual enterprise. With all this expense and extravagance, what must be the re- sult of their present §position ?. Like the drowning man they will catch at straws, and make one more bold, des- perate move, to enable them to connect their institutions again with the legitimate commercial classes. They must become jspeculating machines. Asa dernier resort they must follow in the footsteps of the Bank of the Uni- ted States, and ultimately be swallowed up in the same vortex, The re-action in the trade of this country has commenced independent of the banks ; it is at present on a firm and solid basis, and will increase as the actual re- sources of the people become developed ; itwill advance in proportion to the actual wants of the mass, and steadily im- prove without any fluctuations, so long as the operations are carried on without the aid of banking facilities. Let trade Incr Jtist as fast as the means of those who conduct it will warrant, confining its ramifications to the unalterable laws of trade. By a rigid adhe sound and safe principles, we shall wltim height of prosperity, because the march will constantly be onward, instead of experiencing those terrible revul- sions, that we have been so often visited with, and which, we might most assuredly depend upon again, should the business of the country ever become so mixed and mingled with banks, as we have been since the creation of our independence, to within a couple of years. The banking capital of the three principal cities of the Union, is as follows, at this tim: Boston. 24 banks... New York...23 do... New Orleans, 8 do) in arriving at The banking system of the whole have a «$17,100,000 00 + 23,490,200 00 + 20,929,340 00 $61,529,630 00 This immense sum devoted to the movements of trade in the hands of a few individuals, who expand or contract iscounts at pleasure, so long as the mercantile com~ ies are compelled by the'inflation of business, cansed by these bloated sepulchres, to look to them for aid to get out of the diriculties they enticed them into. This amount so governed must so long as that power exists, be destined to ruin the legitimate trade of the country. We want capital, but we want itto circulate in the proper chan- nels ; we want security and permanency to characterize our business affairs, which can only be acquired by be: coming almost entirely separated from incorporated banks. ‘There never was so favorable a time as the pre nt, and if the existing opportunity is abandoned, the font will be fraught with disaster and ruin. Compel the banks to reduce their great capitals, and many of them to close up their expensive banking houses, and all will go along smoothly and happily. Men,who have devoted their whole lives in acquiring a competency, wil! not have their property swallowed up by these monste! Fortunes will not be made in a day or a year, but the accumulation will be slow and sure, There will be a less number of millionaires, but there will be more moderately wealthy men; the mass will be thriviug, the whole people richer. *s at the Stock Kxchange.
