The increase of population in the West goes on at an extraordinary rate. A census of Wilwaukie city, just taken, shows the number of inhabitants to be 6000, being an increase of more than one hundred percent in three years. Racine, now containing 1100 inhabitants, had in 1889 only, 22 tamilies in the place. The Milwgukie Courier states, ‘ the crowds of emigrants that overflow the public houses and bloek up the streets, on their way to the interior, would appear incredible to any but an eye witness.” {tis aaserted in the Detroit Free Press, that Michi- gan, tor the last two periods of ten years, kas ia- creased in population ata higher rate than any other State or Territory; and that she has even outstripped Ohio, as to t e rate of i increase, atthe same relative stages of their growth.
