As th of the greatest curiosities of the day, and will excite considerable talk, let me give you the history of it, partly obtained from my own observation, and part- ly fom the Indiang, and others. 1 can find no account of this remarkably large apecimen of native copper of an earlier date than about 100 years ago. Ator about 1750, a party of Englishmen came to the region of the rictured rocks on Lake Superior, to mine for copper. Awa matter of course, they found none among that sia- gular sandstone region Another party, in 1764 or 66, came there for asimilar purpose ; one of there left his game cut in the rock; 1¢ reads thus, 9s far as my Memory serves me: © P. Henry, the celebrated travel: ler, also visited this copper rock and region; net having his work by meat present, [must refer your readers to his book for an account of the place Some of these miners left a few of their toolsat the Ont nagon river, where they have since been fouad; andia carting down a large tree, whilst [ was up there, the minera found a piece of a copper ketile in the earty wader the tree, and over which the tree had grown; thia must have remained there nearly 100 years. These early miners dug into the cliffson the bauk of the Outanagon, near where the rock lay, io hopes to fiud copper, but of course withou' The well known very fast sailing British ship CHESTER, John Wilson, master, having. a lance r cargo on board, will have immediate despatch for the above port. Perhaps, however, all this can be ascertained by a reference to Father Hennepin, Chastellax, Charlevoix, &e — Certain it is that Gen Cagsand his party, in 1826, were among the firet Americans that visited the rock ter scientific purposes. You may remember that the Genern! went upto Fond dw Lac, (bottom of the lake,) Lake Superior, in 1826, to make a treaty with some of the O-jib-e-ways. At that time he paid a visit to the copper rock, in company with Henry K Schoolcratt, aud others. | did not think to ask Gen C, when I saw him in Detroit, but I believe he then made no effort to bring the rock away ; he had, however, a perilous vovage, and came near famishiog, and was also nearly drowned Schooleratt gives the dimensions of this rock at 3 teet 8 inches long, and feet 4 inches broad, and ys it contains about Il cubic feet ; he also adde that it weighs about 2200 ibs. Henry, the traveller, who saw itin 1766, says it then weighed five tone De. Houghtrn, the eminent State Geologist for Michigan, calculates its weight at about four tons Of course these are allrough guesses ; but, from measuring it, and seeing it lifted in and ow of the Algonquin and Brewster, I think it cannot weigt wer three tous. This would make it the largee snown specimen of native copper in the known world, although there is a very fine specimen of antive cooper lying in availey in Brazil, which weighs 2666 Portuguese pounds. So much for di- mensions. : Aig Although General Cass did not at his visit attempt to remove the rock, he subsequently sent a party t the Outanagon for that purpose, a short time after. wards. This patty considered the rock too large to be moved by mechanical means; so they cur about thirty cords ot wood, built a large fire around it, and then threw water on it, in hopes 1 woulc ernck all to pieces. This only had the effect o breaking off seme of the quariz rock, &c , that war mechanically attached to its sides. The party then became disheartened and went away; having mov: ed the rock about 4 or 6 iret only from the edge vu: the river, where it was orizioally found. Aoothe: party went there a Moh or two afterwards, among whom was Mr. Barbeau, of the Sault St. Marie, buy hey had vo better luck. About this time, Mr Joseph Spencer, one ot Gen Case’s party, mention ed the rock and ite situation to Mr. Julius Eldred. t hardware merchant, of Detroit. Tie latter then coatrived a plan to remove it, but was not able i 40 to the spot until 1839 ‘The Ontanagon river divides into an east and « west branch, about 24 miles from its mouth; aoc about 6 miles up the west fork of the river, or abour 30 miles from its mouth (following all the windiags.) his celebrated rock lay It also lay on the wee: bank of the west fork of the river. The river is rere about 15 rods wide, very rapid and very shal tow—tne banks or blufis are over 120 teet high a’ pot, crowned with cedar and hemlock, enc ine trees. The bed of the river ie filled with bou! fere of granite, greenstone, sienite, hornblende unvgdaloid, &c. &e., varying in size from 10 tees tiameter, downwards. Aad thia rock lay oa ihe edge of the river, at times partially covered by the rater, aad looked like one of the other boulder: sxternally, having been partially worn by the ac ion of the water and other rocks Some of thr trees having fallen down from the bluffs with masses f earth aod sandstone, have led to the idea the till the treaty of La Pointe, Orr. 4, 1842) 1 buy the rock for $160, of which sum he paid them $4 down, and agreed to ny the balance neat year, whea he ferehed itaway. Mr Eldred then returned to the Saulv St. Marie on the Ith of October, and thence bome. to Detroit In 1942, Mr. E, went upto the Sault to prepare uo outfit to go on for the rock, but was diseppointed and had to return home ~ Ta October the same year Mr. Robert Stuert, tor the Unied States, boughs all that region west ot Chocolate Ryver, of the Indiane, tor about $850 000, or xbout 17 cents per acre, Oa the Ith of Jude, 1843; Mr. Edred lett Detroit, determined to fetch the rock away atall bezerce He took with bim the ax'es and wheels for a smal strong car, (something like a very ameli tool ear to a railroad fepatruly ton dlvep toald end Wackler with five men and provisions. He wentup to La Pointe, hired a middling sized Mackinaw boat of De. Bo rup, (the enterprising andialenied wgentct A FP. ©) went to the Antanagon, and asceacrd 12 miles Np it to the foot ot the “first heavy rapid Here he left the boat and built a store house for his provisions and tackle ; he waa detained herea week by heavy rains, which caused the river to rise to 6 feet and. prevented his ascending. Hé started, however, on the 4th of July, with two hired Indians ay guide and two bark cances. With these he went 9 milee, and landed 8 niles below the Forks, as directed by the Indian guides, with a view to take a neer cross cut over the hills to the rock, which lay 9 miles from there by the river, and only 4% miles in a atraight line i The party then cut across this 44 miles through heavy wooded land and thick brush, across moun- tains aod through deepelems, where ('o look at the place) you would suppose it impossible te earry such 4 mass acrors in any. way 3 they reached the rock thatsame 4th of July. The Indians then de- clared that 20 yoke of oxen could not move the rock After staying here two days they went back to the stere house and brought provisions and all their tackle, with the 4 cast iron wheels and wrought axl+s, staples, chains, &c They next made what is cailed a stone bogt, or bottom, of the cara on which the rock was to be placed. They then hitch- ed chains round the reck, and took two pair of doub'e fall blocks and moved the rock 20 feet up the stream, and into the shore. Here they rolled it over on to the carbottom. They then made a road upa hill where here is over 60 feet perpendicular atcent; and cut fir trees to slide the car-botiom, rock and ail, up on. At this time several minere reached the place, who were exploring the country ; and the party murter- ing ar strong, élid it up the hill or bank ou the Llib of July. On the top of the hill they made a capstan, inorder to haul the car and rock forward on rojlers. This plan did not work well, and all one afternoon they only moved it thirieen rods on level ground ; the then seut back to the store house for the car wheels and more provisions. Then they cut out timber and made two sections of a stout wooden rail track, each twenty five feet long; they pried up the rock, took the car bottom trom under it, cut into the cur bot. tom halt way, fitted the axles in, and compieted the rail car The rock was then elevated five leet by yor's; the track was laid under 11, the car elso rolled on the track under the rock; the blockings aud supports graduaily taken away to ease the rock cown to the car bed (which stood ten inches above the rail track, the wheels being fourteen inche and about dusk this monster was laid enugly, forthe firet time, at least in 5847 years, ona rail car and a railroad. Next morning they moved it seventeen rods befure breakfast; and in ail seventy-one rode that day, the ground being tolerably level. As fast es the car was rolled or drawn off tie bind section of railroad, by the capstan and tackle, that section was teken up and placed in advance, thus making a sort of couti- savous tack. Ta this way the rock and car wrre moved day after day, along the four andy ball miles to the river; sometimes it was moved as far as one hundred and thirty rods ina day, and sometimes only filteen rods, over hills eix hundred feet hig valleys, deep ravines, thick lorest, heavy brushwood, glens, rocks, and ali manner ot places. "Tue lai mile to the siver was a descent; and here they fastened the ear to the hind end of the rail track, placed skids across the roud made of trees, and run ihe whole concern down the hull like a sied, having the tackle made fast to treeson the banks. At she bottom of this loug descent there was a deep ravine, and through this it was hauled as betore on to the bot- tom close to the fiver bark, ead down a rough wa: jercuttothe river. Allihisdistence nearly the rond hed to be cut away through the timber Tous the rock was brought down to three miles below the Forks, and about nineteen or twenty miles trom the mouth of the river. Mr. Eldred then went down the river and bought a Mackinaw boat, which he brought up to the rock, they then cut a notch in the bauk of the rive brought (he bow of the boat in there ; laid one part of the track ia the bottem ot the boat (after tekin out the seats) and carried the other prece of the rack on a descent, go as to join and lap over the firet piece, and thus roiled the reck, still on the car, cown an inclined plane into the boat. But even here their troubles were not at an end They knew nothow they should get the boat «own the wext eight orten mi-s of the river, which for this distance is full ot rapids. Fortunately, that ater noon there came a@ tremendous treshet, and assisted they ran the boat down below the lower rapide that night in safety. Next dav they rowed down with the reck w the mouth of the river by noon; this being the 15h of August Here the roek lay io the Mackinaw boat till the 12h of Sep- tember, when the Algonquin schooner (ve longing !o the Cleveland Co) came to the river; the crew thea hoisted the rock on board, (still oa the car) by carrying the falls to the wind.«ss, and put the mon ter down into the hold. On bourd the Algonquin it was carried to the east end and and outlet of Luke Superior, just st he head ot the Failsot St. Mary, a distance of 320 miles, for $100 Here there isa small ditch, called a canal, round the Falls. A lurge Mackinaw boat was run alongede the vessel, the rock was hoisted into it, and the boat wes run down the canal tor three quarters of a mile, owing to the high water in the Jake. There was still » quarter of a mile of ground to carry it iver tothe A. F ©.’s wharf below the Falls, where the Brewster lay ready to take it to Detroit Here (wo sirong carts belongug to the A. F. C were ‘ashed so as to form a strong umber wagon; the rock and cer were slung under the axles of these carta, and fourstout oxen drew it to the warehouse ot thea. F C. onthe 17h of September. It was put on board the Brewster for Detroit on the 4th of October. and $25 paid tor its passage, a distance of this roek rolled down to the river trom the wes cliff, when its sub-siructure was washed away. Nothing more was done towards removing thir ock wank I841—Mr Eldred then went up to the sault St, Marie io September Oo the 17h ne wen ap io the brig Astor to La Pointe, near the head Lake Superior, and about 8) oF 100 miles beyons he mowh +f the Oatansgon He there bought. vali-sized Mackinaw boat, went down the coast {roa river~there he hired three Ladians aud twe sanoes, and all went up the Oatanagon three mile: rom its mouth—here they pirebed a camp, left th roat and went up to the forks in canoes; they can) “dat the forks, and got to the reck next day abou! noon. They had tools wih them, and cut ofl pieces vf the rock, bat couid not move it—they spent !he! day and night there, and returned next day to their Mackinaw boat—went immediately to the mouth of the river, Indians, canoes and all, and there eneamp- ved. tlere he bargained with the as Who, wi that time owned all that region, (they did not sell it about 450 miles, It reached Detrow the Ih of October Such is the history of the celebrated Copper Rock ot Lake Superior.
