The Ist brigade of the Ist division is composed of the Ist, 6ch, Mth, 17th, and 25th regiments Infantry; Ist and 4h regiments Caualry, and 2d regiment Ar- tillery, tormad from the following town: Ist regiment Infantry from Hartford, Bloomfield, We- thersfield, and Windsor— 6th regiment from Middletown, Durham, Chatham, Ist Society, Stepney in Wethersfield, and Berlin in Wor. thington— 4 14th regiment from Farmington, Berlin, Bristol, Bur- lington, Southiagton. and part of Canton— 17th regiment, from Simsbury, Suflield, Granby, part of Hartford, East Windsor and Canton— 25th regiment, from Fast Windsor, Glastenbury, Fast cannon, the pealings of the city bells, the rolling of drums, waving of standards by the companies, and waving of handkerchiefs by the Jadies—or, more graphically, as a lady near me described the ca cade, asa whirlwind of horses to a storm of martial music. The Colonel then made _ a speech from his car- riage about Tecumseh and the Sunday Mail Report, which nobody heard but everybody cheered Governor Cleaveland then arose. The horses, annoyed by the pressure of the erowd, became res- tive— “Never mind the horses,” said he, “there is no danger while this car bears Copsar and his for- tunes”—laying his hand on the Colonel’s head. He made a neat speech, when both were saluted by nine cheers, and drove on. Thus ended.the pertormances of the first day. Tuurspay, Oct. 5th, 1843. Srconp Day or rue Brigape.—The sun, to make up tor his smiles yesterday, was today rather dis- posed to the salks. The brigade turn and at 10 o'clock ed out finely by nine o’clock, took up their line of march for the ground selected {or the grand exhibition of the day. About! halt past ten o’clock we took a sta- tion near the bridge over which they passed to the “field. And really it repents us that we viewed them yesterday in so trifling a light. ‘Tongue can- not tell, words cannot express, the imagination can hardly conceive the splendor, the grandeur, the magnificence of the spectacle, as the mass of sol- diers debouched from the head of Morgan street to the front of the briage As far as the eye could reach, the streets were filled with the moving bat- talions. An innumerable multitude of men and horses poured on and on, uuder the dark portals of the bridge. Long, deep, glitteriag masses marked the march of the regular militia, and more dazzling lines -of light indicated the mareh of the, volunteer companies. The glancing of bayonets in the rays of the sun sparkled like foam erests on the sea.— Scarlet lines marked the advance of the squadrons ot cavalry, whilea confused murmur went up from, the trampling of horses, the march of the columns, and the rolling of the drums along the whole line like the roar of tye distant ocean. The heav: bridge shook under the simultancous tread of suc hosts of armed men, and the doubling drums, re- verating under tae Jong arches, lent their aid to swell the grandeur and sublimity of the scene. About noon the lines were arranged, as we thought, fora sham battle, but no battle took place. The regimeats, however, went through a series of novel and brilliant evolutions. Ist. The day being very fine, there was quite a full turn-out. After parading about by single regiments, with volunteer companies in the van nnd rear, and the regular militia in the centre, the regiments uni- ted and formed one unbroken line, extending from one end of the city to the other. This was the ;o- sition in which they stood when we were wrought up to such a pitch of presumption as to wish that the whole world might become. clarivoyant, and take one single look at them. They were stationed in regimental order, flag stafia two paces in the rear, and officers two in front. Unantterable glory beam- edfrom every countenance and radiated from every visor. ‘The light-horse of the county appeared in full uniform, scarlet coats, laced with silver, brimstone emall clothes, black gaiters and bear skin crested helmets—a splendid company. Most of the light- horse were similarly uniformed, and_of course pre- sented an imposing appearance. Nothing extra struck the eye in the other companies, excepting the drill of the Hartford Light Guard, which was certainly extraordinary. Every movement of eyes, hands and limbs seemed that of one undivided bo- dy. We have, however, one remark to make, that applies to nearly all the volunteers, and we wish tt to be taken seriously. Their tails were too short. The most of the companies were so curtailed that we were almostat a loss to find any tail at all. To make vp for this censure of their tails, we give them due credit for their splen- did breasts. Gorpon Bennett, Esq. :— The brig Washington, Captain Geo Bishop, from Matanzas, 26th ult ,hasjustarrived. I have seen the Captain, and he informs, there was nothing of an ex- citing character when he sailed from that place.— American produce of every description was scarce and in demand. There wasa good stock of sugar on hand and prices low. Two vessels had been en- gaged to take cargoes of sugar to European ports; but four vessels were in port and freights good. An- nexed is the vessels left :— ps Ship Dromo, Devereux, from Boston, waiting ; barque Chief, Cressy, for Boston, loading; sehr. Agawam, Rogers, from N. York, discharging; schr. James Gorvox Bennetr, Esq :— Dear Sin:— The fair debutante who made her “ first appear- ance on any stage” at the Walnut street Theatre last evening, produced quite a favorable impression. She is possessed of three essential qualifications, youth, beauty and intellect. Her name is said to be “ Miss Bell,” and I should not be surprised if she eventual ly proves a belle in the dramatic circles. The pro- fession which she has chosen is indeed an arduous one, and though seemingly strewn with roves, the thorns are most apt to iacerate when least expected. That she may progress in it, “* winning golden opin- ions from all sorts of people,” is my earnest desire asa votary of the drama. Our Theatres are now in the full tide of experi- ment, and to enumerate them I will begin with the Walnut which (with the Chesnut) is under the ma- nagement of one of the best managers that we have ever had in this city, namely, Mr. Marshall, who has associated with hima the talented Charlotte Cushman, and “the last man” as he is so fond of terming himself—Mr. Blake. This Theatre is em- phatically the American one, where the “ hi hi” of our yankee lads is given with the true spirit of re- publicanism They have young Vandenhoff at this establishment, who has already made himeelf high- ly popular with ‘‘the groundlings and the gods,” who are ever ready togive him the customary salutation upon hisexits -nd entrances. The company at the Walnutis remarkably good and includes many of our most favourite actors, to wit: Messrs Henkins, Hadaway, Spear and Leman; and on the part of the ladies the two Miss Cushmans, Mra. Thayer and Miss Fisher. The National under the managemert of Oxley and Wemyes is not very successful. Mrs. Knight, is a lady of true excellence in her ‘*vo- cation.” | have been informed that she is original- ly from your State, where she once taught school, but forming a romantic marriage it induced her to follow the destinies ot a member of the histrionic profession to whom she had allied herself, and we now find her moving ‘in the mimic scene,” and adorning it with talents which would otherwise have been hidden from the audience whom she now nightly delights with her histrionie abilities. Wal- lack’s engagement has terminated. His perform- ances of Roila, the Stranger, Dick Dashall and other characters have been perteet gems, upon which my attention was fixed with continued delight.
