Friday, Oct. 6—6 P.M. ‘The stock market presented a complete panic this morning without any adequete cause. All stocks fell heavily. Great speculation has for a long time been going on in Harlem, based upon the fact of its rapidly rising intrinsicjvalue. Many closely connected with the road undertook to play with the stock, and a deep scheme was laid, after a large quantity of stock was sold short, to make the stock fall by artificially discrediting thefcom- piny {This scheme utterly failed] hrough thesagacity and vigilance of the leading directors. The rumors growing out of the transaction frightened the weak brokers, and the desperate movements of those short of the stocks created a kind of psnic, which has influenced all stocks, When the market becomes settled, we will give a little history of the affair, which will be highly instructive.
