WILLIAMS, New COMM] MACHINE so BLANKETS AND LAPPINGS—for sale by PERSSE, & BROOKS, Nox 61 Libert Mexico.—Ly the arrival of the schooner Ama zon, at New Orleans, from Vera Cruz, journals have been received from that city, says the New Orleans Courier of the 6th inst., to the 2lst, and of Mexico to the 16th inclusive, from which we have extract- ed the most interesting contents, together with a decree of the President, prohibiting the importation of certain goods, a translation of which was given us by the Mexican Consul. Captain {Parkinson is bearer,of despatches from our Minister at Mexico to the Department of State. Shortly after the arrival of the Amazon, it was | rumored that the port of Tampico was closed to fo- reign trade, and that a decree to this eflect would be forthwith published. We have not been able to discover any foundation for this rumor, and we be- lieve it to be doubttul at least. The Censor of the 2lst, contains a letter from Matamoras of the 9th, announcing tha: the Texan schooner Santa Ana had arrived there, having on board Mr. Golan, a Mexican officer, who had car- ried despatches from Santa Ana to the President of ‘Texas, and returned with the answer. The writer of the letter says, he is very busy in translating this answer; and that he has time enly to say, that it is very satisfactory for Mexico, that the Texan’ Commissioners will be at, Laredo, on the 25'h September, a froatier town, where the concitions and duration of the armistice will be arranged. The result of the primary elections, which have just taken place, in Mexico, ia not known. At Vera Cruz they ware favorable to Santa Ana—but it is said, they have not ended in the same man- ner in other places. But there is nothing positive onthis subject, and it is difficult to form an opin- ion from this first essay, as the elections have three grades. The following is @ translation of the decree re- erred to:— Consunate of THe Mexican Rervstie New Onuegans, 6th September, 1843. Before Recorder Tallmadge, aud Aldermen Woodhull ‘and Dunning. James R. Waitina, Esq., District Attorney. Fria 15.—Sentexce Day.—This being the usual day of reatence, the prisoners were arraigned and after toking the oath relative to their previous occupe- tion, were placed in the jury room until called up for sen tence, The first placed in the box was John Moffatt, convicted on three indictments for bur. glary. On boing asked by the Clerk if he had any thing to say why sentence should not be passed upon him, he drew a sheet of paper written on both sides, which he read in a Joud voice, declaring that bis confe sions were the only evidence against him, which were obtained by promises of release from the officers to whom he made the disclosures. On the conviction for burglary inthe first degree, in entering the jewelry store of Fred- erick Levy, 78 Bowery, on the 4th of November, he was sentenced to the State prison forten yeare; on the convic- tion for burglary in the third degree, in entering the fancy and perfumery store of Joseph W. Trust, 67 Walker street, on the 24th of October last, he was sentenged for five years. (The prisoner here said that he hoped this would be a warning to all charged with crime never to reveal or give up say property. that had been stolea, on promise of eing let up by the court or officers.) On the charge of burglary in the third degree, in en tering the French Roman Catholic Church in Canal street, on the 4th of November last, he was also renten j—making a total on the three charges of twenty years; which will terminate his life, os he is now 40 years of age. ‘he prisoner here jin addressed the audience, and Called upon all the burglars, thieves and robbers in his hearing, and their fathers and sone, to take warning and never to ny information to the police on promises of favors to be extended. Benjamin Slater, a colored man, was next called. On being asked what he had to say why sentence should not be passed upon him, he made an eble reply, in which he contended that the evidence against him on the tri although sufficient to satisfy the court and jury of his jt, yet was incomplete, and if the whole trath had Been tela, the result would have been different. ‘The Court then proceeded to sentence, and after com- meuting upon the Intelligence of prisoner, and his well known character as a burglar, sentenced him to the State Prison for ten years on the burglary in the first degree, for entering the jewelry store of Frederick Levy, 78 Bowery—five years for third ear in entering the Cr- tholic Church—Five years, for third degree in entering the fancy store of J. W. Trust, 67 Walker street, and fire more tor third degree in entering the store of Semuel Martin on the 18th of October—making a total of twenty five years, which in all probability will terminate his life, as he is about 36 years of age. Slater and Moffatt were concerned together in the three first. named burgla- Ties, but the latter was alone in the last. On the charge cf arson and burglary againstthem both for robbing and setting fire tothe dry goods store at the suuthwest cor ner of Broadway and Anthony street Slater was tried im the Cou:tof Oyer and Terminer and convicted, but the verdict was set aside by the Supreme Court on gon of illegality in theform of the indictment. Moffalt was , convicted on two indictments for for- not tried on the charge. Da ight te! gery in the third degree, in forging checks in the name of Minott Mitchell, was next arraigned for sentence. He made a few remarks tothe Court, in which he said he had been | led to the crime by associates, and therefore — for all the clemeney that could be extended to im, "The Curr stated in imposing sentence, that the of- fence was one that had rapidly increased of late in this community, and therefore the stern arm of the law must be raised to prevent it. this case, he having entered a plea of guilty to the charge, and it being his first offence, they should neither give himthe maximum northe min- imum part of punishment, and therefore sentenced him to the State Prison for three years on each indictment, ma- king six combined. John Sexton, who had entered a plea of guilty to a charge vf forgery in the 31 degree in forging a note for $71 in the name of Wm. @. Dunn, was sentenced for two years, Semuel Jones, the red haired boy, cenvioted of an at. tempt at burglary in the Ad degree int endeavoring to en- ter the house of W. H. Brown, was sentenced for five years. He made an ingenious and eloquent appeal to the Court in his defence, but being an old offender, and having previously been in the penitentiary, no clemency was shown him. John Clark, steward of the bark Aranda, George Wil- son and George W. wn, colored men, convicted of grond larceny in atealing a box of speciv from the brig containing $3,200, were nextarraigned. Clark was se tenced for five years. Wilson, who says he was persua- ded to commit the act by Clark, was sentenced to three years, and Brown, who says he received a part of the mo- ney, to two years. Bauer, was tried on an indictment for forgery in the fourth de- gree for passing a Mexican counterfeit piece, purporting to be of the value of twenty-five cents, ‘The prosecution proved by a boy nemed Charles Butt, who wes clerk in the grocery store of his mother, at the corner of Roosevelt and Stanton streets, that the accused came there on the evening of the 11th ot August last, and purchased two segars, for which he gave a twenty-five cent. Mexican quarter of dollar, and received the change— Alter leaving the store it was ascertained thi the piece was counterfeit, and the boy on whom he passed it on going out to look for him, found him at- tempting to pass a similar piece on John F. Galse, grocer, opposite, in payment for aglass of beer. The piece wax refused, and theaccused then gave three cents in change. On ‘his arrest, officer Stanton searched his trunk, and found a number of plaster moulds or dies, and twelve American quarters, which were counterfeit. ‘The priso- soner defended himself, assisted by Mr. Tomlinson, and contended tnat the plaster c and the counterfeit mon- ey, were given to him by Leonhart, who is soon to be tried in Kings county for the same offence. The jury convicted him of the offence, and the court, after stating the fact that he had recently served a term in State prison, sentenced him to Sing Sing for twoy ears, that being the extent of the law on conviction for fergery in the fourth degres Trial of Michael Walsh —This person was tried for a libel on John McMahon, late collector of the sixth ward, os published in the “Subterranean,” on the 29th July last. ‘The cbarge was relative (o an affray that took place at a porter house on the corner of Centre and Franklin streets, in which McMahon was said to bea participant. The Captain and his officers were examined at length, and from their statements, it ar that the Hercules sailed from Charleston, 8.C., for Liver- pool, and was on her retura passage from the latter portto this, with the same crew ; that at Liverpool, the vessel had’been supplied with beef and pork, out of bond, sutfici- ent to have victualled her for a voyage round the world ; that on the 23th of August, the vessel rae ie under charge of lot, the four seamen, Thomas Lishman, Sa- muel Kilpatrick, John Gilhan and Peter Burns, came aft on the quarter deck, and demanded “ meat,” Lishman be- ing the spokesman ; the Captain ordered them to go for- ward, but for a time they hesitated, when he attempted to push the spokesman back, which attempt was resented Ld his equaring off and striking the Captain a blow, whic! b eived on his arm; thereupon the Captain called \ the chief mate, and seizing Lishman, ironed him, and tl the rest ofthe crew returned foi ; that during the Jat- ter part of the voyage the men were disobedient, and per- formed their duty in a slow and unsatisfactory mann paying slight attention to the safety of the ship, her sails, and the owner’s intorests. The defence was, that the pro- visions were of a most inferior description, that the beef when boiled shrank to @ half, and that “short allowance” was served on the crew, while the Captain sold the beefto the steerage passengers for his own benefit. ‘The assault on the Captain was partially denied. After the evidence on both sides hod been heard, the Commissioner decided that there was not sufficient evidence of eae in 2 pt to incite to revolt, shown egainst Kil — Gilham and Burns, who were therefore discharged.
