Memenis, Tenn, Aug 25, 1843. | Growth of Memphis—Naval Depot— Diversion of Wof River—The Hotels—Churches—Military— Amusements— The Ladies and their Beaus. Mk. Epitor: Having waited in vain for your correspondent of last vear, to make his appearance in your interesting columns, we have ventured to give yeu a slight his tory of our doings, this summer, in the hope that it may attract the attention of some of your numerous readers to this “ young giant of the west,” as our city has been appropriately called. Our town, differént trom most of the towns of the Mississippi valley.has none of that mushroom growth, so common to them during the great speculating mania which pervaded the country a few years since. On the contrary, although possessing nature} advan!ages superior to any of her rivals, her growth to importarece has been slow but steady, and her prosperity brought about by men who have gone ou soberly, with their own good judgment to guide them, as to the real worth of property, rather thon the crazy calculations of seculating iown makers. The consequences are that at present Memphis 16 attracting more attention abroad, and offers greater inducements to enterprising men, than any other place in the south or wes : You are, doubtless, aware that this is the point spoken of, at which the new naval depot is to be es- tablished, and our citizens are sanguine in the be- lief that the western armory will also be located here. Our very efficient Mayor, with the Board of Aldermen, have contracted for the introduction into the city the water of Wolf River, a stream which empties into the Mississippi on the north of the town, which, besides supplying us with water for domestic use, will affurd great power for manufacturing pur- poses. Travellers must be astonished at the many fine buildings, which are erecting throughout the ery, and, we doubt not, will admit that considerable taste has been displayed in the larger portion of them. The Gayoso House, a splendid edifice (oy far the finest in the State) will be opened to the public ear- lv this fall. So says the its enterprising owners. The Exchange Hotel, kept by one of the hest landlords of the south west, 1s the crack house of the place. The City Hotel is doing a good business, but owing to its untavorable location cannot compete with the Exchange There are many other public houses, i are well kept, and compare most favorably with the hotels of the west. Our spiritual welfare is well provided for, aa far as churcies are concerned ; besides those that are al- ready occupied, there are four new ones in the course of erection. ‘The Methodist denomination is the largest and wealthiest in the eity, and are very liberal with their means in the affairs of their church militant.’ Their “meeting house,” when finished, will be an ornament to cur town, as well as the largest in the place. The Catholics have a very neat chapel. The congregation, as yet, is small; but like their brethern throughout the world, very devout They are under the pastoral care of the Rev. Mr MeAleer, a gentleman well qualified for the station he fills. The Episcopalians, under the care of the Rey. Mr. Alston, a talented young unmarried divine, have a tine church, and arrogate to themeelves ail the “aristocracy” of the place ; the br Iles of the ci ty attend this church—but who would expect it other- wise? Mr. Alston is “so handsome,” and has be- spoke the cushioned seats of his Father’s mansion for the especial use of his congregation, so that they will have sore prerention to exclusive gentility in the next world, as well this. a The Baptists bave a new church in the upper part of the city—it is quite small, but very neat. You may think his maoners are very much affected, but allow us to correct you, by aseuriog you that a long ac- quaintance with him leads us to believe that such is not the case. The lady on the right of the second cotilon, we have not the pleasure of an acquaintance with, but beheve she is from a neighboring county, on a visit to her friends in this city. Her avpearance is very interesting, notwithstanding her dregg is not in the est tasto—a great deficiency in the most of our females, which we hope to see reformed. Vanity aside, he is a very pleasant gentleman; and, we are to!d, much given to spoiling portraits, which admonishes us that we must deal gently with him.
