W. Rosier, and dedicated to the glee singers of the United States. The publisher is of opinion that from the rapid advancement of glee singing in this country, it is much to be desired that the German cempositions ehould be placed within reach of the amateur; and one of his objects is to enable ama. teursto form a correct acquaintance with the glees of Weber, Spohr, Kreutzer, Blum, Eisenhofer, Werner, &c., and to do it in the cheapest possible manner, he has printed them in parts after the Ger- man fashion. No—reasoa answers no; common seuse scoffs at the idea; and yet upon the other baad who could the party rally upen, and for what purpose could an enthusiastic feeling be created. But time will solve this query. That the political world is pregnant with revolution no man can deny. Tt was amusing to witness the anxiety of the as- piring politicians at the convention. There was ex- Governor Marcy, anxious to be made President of the convention for the purpose of making such an act, as a species ot ronalatiy foran office. I learn that he is seeking a Collectorship under the govern: ment, and resting under the belief that Mr. Tyler would seek to draw out the strong pillars of the Van Buren structure, his success would be his beat recommendation. There also was ex Consul Thomas N Carr, anxious to procure the appoint- ment to the Baltimore Convention, believing that euch an honor would procure for him in case of Mr. Van Buren’s success, the return of a Consulship. Mr. Stamm, of the *’ Plebeiau,” was also very desi- rous to be one of the members of the Baltimore Convention; his object was no doubt to fully en- graft him upon Mr. Van Buren’s coefidence, and thereby secure the governmeut printin fe. ome hundred other lobby members were equally anxious to obtain seats in the National Convention. By the way, [had almost forgotten to give you a history of an amusing scene in S: gene on the ovens of the close of business. . Carr having been disappointed in procuring a eat ‘tor the Balti- more Convention, set himself at work to create a little sport. He repaired from the convention to his head quarters, and wrote a letter, of which the fol- lowing is a copy to each of the Calhoun members of the Convention :— (Private.) Mr. pe please call at my room. Deley By from City New York. On Mr. Shaler receiving his note, he at once re- paired to the head quarters of Mr. Marcy, and isked if the letter wasgenuine. Being informed it was not, he next made tracks to Mr. Carr’s head quarters, and finding him in the bar room of the National Hotel, engaged in busy conversation with a goodly company ot lobby members, at once pre- sented the note to him, and asked if he wrote “that.” Mr. Carr answered “No!” but said he knew who did. Suater.—Who is the man? Carr.—P—. SHaver.—You're a scoundrel—a pretty subject to send abroad asa Consul. For two pins I'd ring your nose. Carr here became somewhat frightened, and said he meant the *‘ letter” merely as a joke. SuaLer —Do you think you can joke in this manner wit': me, you d—d scoundrel, ycu. [Here Shaler rushed at Garr, but the Iriends’ of the part iaterceded, and suggested the propriety of pro- curing pistols for two, and by this means prevenied ascene of disgrace on the spot, which otherwise would have taken place. Thave not yet learned whether they have yet made arrangements for a meeting of * honor” between two gentiemen, but have no doubt it will take place. William Allen, U.S. Senator, ot Ohio —A good number of one of the best of our maga zines. A leading article, “On the Origin and Bat Ground of Government,” by Brownson, is perhaps too transcendental to be profitable to the general reader, though manly and fearless in its specifica- tions and exposures of demagogueism. ‘* Poetry for the People,” is an admirable essay on the rela- tions and duty of the poet to his brethren, the labor- ing masses, who are the basis and support oi all social and civil organization.. The author truly asserte, as the immediate result of the French Re- volution, so unsparingly denounced by the bigoted, the interested, and the ignorant, ‘‘ that it gave rise to anew state of things;” that ** man as such, was ad- mitted by his brother as a brother, and his name and title allowed to rank higher than king or presi- dent ;” and that “ the predominant fact of the 19:b century is unquestionably the importance and eleva- tion of the mass.” Appropriate specimens of ‘‘poe try forthe people,” are givea from Barry Cornwall, Longfellow, and others Whittier has a pretty con tribution on ‘‘ New England Supernaturalism;” the “* glory and shame” of New England. Tucker man furnishes several scraps of poetry; and Lowell peeps, with both eyes open, “ behind the curtain.” Miss Anne C. Lynch, of Providence, R. L., gives a page of her sweet sympathy to the “ Dying Syea- mores;” but the final quatrain, which should be to the poem what the diamond is to the turban of the Sultan, the finishing ornament, degenerates, (and we must say it, however, ungallantly,) into dog- gerel. Itreads: “ Yeemblem many a weary heart, To this fair world of ours; For fey that love not, are like ye, Oa! dying Sycamores.” The rhyme is sacrificed between the second and fourth lines; unless Miss Lynch intends the reader to preserve the Down-East pronunciation of Syca- mowers. Moreover, what means she by “‘ they that love not ;” Is it a remonstrance against the young bachelors of the ‘Suffrage party?” If so, we pro test against their pene and appeal to &. vernor Dorr. “ They that love not, are hike ye—oh! dying sycamores!” That is, they are not green— they are worm-eaten, dry old sticks, to say the best ofthem.
