Now, if we compare the price of Ne 3 hisaninea poled lambs’ wool with the picked Buenos Ayres wool, we find that in April, 1842, the former was 4 cents per, pound high- er than the latier, Atthe present time the samé quality of American wool is 1 cent per pound chet per than the South Americaa article. Hence, there isa dilferonce of 6 cents per pound in favor of substituting the American ar ticle to the exclusion of the foreign, the latter being much the coarser article, Henee, an iccrease consump. tion of American wool arising from a fall in the money value of the American artic! which the farmers get from the tariff. They lose their foreign markets fir their surplus ; stocks here sink the price below that of the imported ar ticle, and then the manufacturers condescend to use it, at the same time exclaiming, ‘ See how we patronise the agricuituriste |!” The advocates for protection are con- tinually preaching tothe farmers ot the benefits of the home markets, aud to persuade them that it is better to rev linquish altogether foreign intercourse. The object of ery spparent, and is illustrated in the case of the wools above mentioned. If the market for agricultural products isconfiaed tothe United States, the effect isto diminish the money value in the hands of the farmer, and cons«quently the manufacturers get those articles cheap- er. The manufacturers and their organs gravely tell the furmers that if they will consent to pay double prices for their manufactured goods, that the manufacturers in re. turn will eat double the quantity of flourand pork! The common sense of the farmers is far too strong to be im. posed upon by any such sophistry. Let a farmer go into Lowell, and observe its 10 000 young women, their bloom, ing and healthy looks, and thea estimate how much more pork and wheat they will consume én consequence of a tariff onwoollens, and yet such absurdities are gravely urged, even in Congress, in favor of a violation of the constitution for the benefit of a few manufacturers. The consump.ion of agricultural produce in this country can increase only with the growth of the popylation, and with that growth the supplies of produce wilfincrease in atwo fold ratio, the employment of the whole people be- ing essentially agriculiural. poverty stricken myriads of Europe, the victims ofa long period of “protection,” that the markets for American produce it to be found, and all attemps to dam up, check, or retard in any manner a free intercourse between the + two countries, on the basis of an interchange of industrial products for the common benefit of the citizens of both, into destroy the bedb interests of the whole American Tones, Partpdoes, Ship Scotland, C; rajtar 25th duty with ton, —_ rhe, — 30—passed Gib- Tri La, ORLEANS nals with an ¥o “brig, sapposed to NYork.
