Of paper... 18,225,783 4,508,169 Total «17,733,972 Issued... sees 5,860,115 Diminution of circulation, $12,373 857 The deposites of the Banks are, for the most part, but another name for loans, and although they are liable to be withdrawn for the moment for specie, yet they must all soon be applied to the purposes for which they were obtain- ed viz., to pay the loans due to the Banks, Ifan individual has a note maturing atone bank, a discount may be. btain- ed atanother. The proceeds are a deposite to-day and are withdrawn by check and transferred to another bank in the retirement ofadiscount. The circulating medium of the country has been reduced by the operation of these banks $12,875,887, yet the cry is that money is cheap ! ex: ceodingly cheap! can be had at rates lower than ever before. When the terms are inquired into, however, it is found that a certain description of paper made by certain men for certain purposes, will comniand the money. Inthe whole western and southern country money is not only exceedingly scarce, but it is almost impossible to procure itoneuy terms, By-the operation of corporate inst tions ali the money of the country which should circulate {ree as air, is poured into reservoirs, the keepers of which stand, continually crying cheap money ! cheap money ! but it is cheap money only aceording to their dictation. Ifthere were no corporate institutions in which money is sucked up out of the pockets of a)l individuals where lit- tle aecumulations take place, money would freely and easily find its way in all departments of business, per- forming its legitimate functions of effecting the inter- change of goods between man and man. Its constant ac- tivity would cause a small amount to do infinitely more business than is now done by ajarge sum. The opera tion of banking is to draw all into a certain circle and then allow it to be employed only by certain persons for certain purposes, in which in many cases the officers claim an interest. No mechanics or working men ever geta loan from banks, or are in any way benefitted by them. A speculator who calls himself a mechanic will procure large toans and monopolize a business and make a fortune out of the mechanics who do the work. Indus try, honesty and frugality are now no longer of any use to the young man in procuring assistance in his bxsiness. ‘Two names anda reputation fer ingenious rascality will command all the means of the banks, providing the offi. cers have an interest in the speculation. Both helders and purcha- sere appear disposed to await the result of the expected European advices, before operating. Six bales of new cotton arrived at New Orleans on the 7th inst., from Rodney, Miss. ‘he sales in this market rule firm at the advance. Ashes—Pots rather tending downwards. We continue to quote, however, $4 31}, although some small lots have been disposed of at $425.’ Pearls are rising; most of the sales are made at $531}, but we hear of operations at 25 Hay--We notice sales to a moderate extent of good qualities, at 42045. Th nd for shipment has fallen off ; most of the Southern markets are sufficiently sup. plied, and the sales forthe East have neerly given that section a f Flour—Thit isstill very dull. We cannot quote Genesee over $4 8742494, at which moderate sales are made to supply the demand that exists for consumption; Michigan and Onio $4 7594 81}; Ohio, round hoop, $481; $6; Southern is hardly enquired for, and quotatio cannot be considered otherwise than nominal. Holders of wheat have 2een compelled todo as we predicted; prices have declined, and sales to some extent have conse: quently followed; new end old we quote 95898; the stock is quite extensive, and the supplies very steady, and to a moderate extent we is scarce, and in active demand, at 69a70c. of Northern Corn at 57a58c, and of Southern at $3}a55. Oats are plenty, sales at 27)a28}. ‘The receipts of flour andgrain at Buffolo, have within the past few days been very light, caused, we think, by there being none brought into market for shipment at the Western markets, in consequence of the harvests going oninthat section, which occupies all the time andatten- tion ofthe producers. Oil— Whale is very scarce in this market, in demand and prices tending upward. ‘The last sales were made at 84 cts., which purchasers submit to unwillingly. Since our last we have heard of two arrivals at the east, buth small cargoes. The imports of whale and sperm oil into the United States for the week ending the 14:h inst, near 2990 bbls, Sperm and 7555 bbls. Whale, At New Bedford the 14th asale of crude Sperm at 70 cts. Several parcels of un- bleached spring oil sold at 65 cts., which price is now ot. fereS and refused. 69 cts is now asked. 100 bbs. South fevwhale sold at 34 cts., and 600 bbls. northwest at 35 cents. Mosiie, August 9.—About 350 bales of cotton are all that is at present offering for shipment, and there is some doubt whether the vessels now here will take it or go to New Orleans. Savanwan, August 12.—We are stil! without any move. ment in foreign. ‘To New York the packets are loading at 50cents per bale for cotton in round or square bales, and 0c. per cask for rice. A transient vessel engaged 6 full cargo yesterday at 50 cents for cotton, and 37} cents per cask for rice. To Boston the rate is $1 per bele for cetton, and 75 cents per cask for rice. Married.
