James Gorpon Benner, Esq.:-- Dear Sin,— At an early hour yesterday morning, the steamer Bunker Hill, baving on board a committee appoint- ed by our citizens for the purpose of escorting the venerable Ex-President to our city, proceeded to the Falls, where he had been spending a few days with Gen. Porter. The day was as lovely a could have been desired, and an excursion upon the Nin- gara, though short, must have aflorded the old gen- tleman much pleasure and satisfaction. At4 P.M the boat approached our whart, where thousands of our citizens, and many strangers, had congre gated, all anxious to eatch a glance at the “ old man eloquent,” as some have been pleased to call him. The air, for some minutes, was filled with hearty cheers, and a procession was soon formed which moved up Main street to the park, where previous arrangements had been made for the re- ception of our distingnished guest He was received by the Hon Millard Fillmore in a short but very ap- propriate address, to which the old gentleman re- plied in happy remarks of half an hour's duration, After congratulating us upon the prosperity of our flourishing city, and upon the freedom and liberty we enjoy, and expressing many heartfelt thanks for his kind recepuon, he said— = Bite. ‘The Troy on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. i! But as the return for wel- come is gratitude, and as gratitude is somewhat loqua- cious, I must sayromething farther vo you. What can! say late you? I congratulate you then upon your condition in the world. I congratulate you upon that ireedom which you enjoy—I wisn | could say above I congratulate you upon the land in land flowing with milk and honey—a ns and valleys—of mountains, and moun: tains all over the world are the abodes of liberty. Liber- ty is a mountain nymph ; but beside that general property ed in avery quarter of the globe, you possess a g reserved by the Creator for you alone—and that is the phenomenon of which so late in life, Lhave, within the last four days, been a witness. Your lind is not on ly aland of mountains, but of Cataracts and Whirlpools— objects of nature in which the Creator of the world has displayed his sublimest power. In visiting them--in ga- zing at them—in dwelling upon them, as inthe last four days I have done, I have felt somewhat as I seem to feel in your presence. Ifelt unable to speak. It seemed as if there was a suspension, not only of words, but of thought —that it threw a man, seeing them for the first time, into the condition ascribed to the prophets of old the spirit of God came upon him—as if he saw the vision of the Almigiity, falling into @ trance having his eyes open. The fall of those dashing and roaring waters—the instant destruction with which we know them to be fraught—the danger, the leap which they tempt us to make and mingle with them—the serene tranquility of the long river open in vista before them. and the smooth and silent current in which they flow again after the fall, showing in contrast at one view, the extreme of violence and repose—and above allthat rainbow set in cloud, the covenant pledge of God to man, thet what in ite nature is destruction shall not destroy—form ultogether a picture for the imagination which one feels that words cannot express. When the recollection comes that the intelligence and industry of man have made those waters tributary to a great public improvement, and the Cataract itself an instrument ofthe bounty of God forthe benetit of the human family, by borrowing from this stupendous wonder of Nature a portion of its stream for manufacturing purposes, we can- not butexclaim, “Great and marvellous are thy works Lord God Omnipotent —in wisdom hast thou made them all.” After alluding to several of our most distinguish- ed citizens in a complimentary manner, he congra- tulated himself upon the pleasure he had received from coming among us. “| have,” said he, “ been at Lundy’s Lane, and at Chippewa, with that illus- trious man, Gen. Porter, who has fought in the bat- tles of his country. Thave seen no memento of that political era between these two countries, divided y that natural phenomenon berween the two, as if Heaven had considered it too much fer one. There (in Canada) [ have been received as a friend, with friendly greetings, and I ejaculate a prayer to God, that this state of temper may be perpetual—tha’ the sound of war, and of garments rolled in blood, may never again be exhibited.” He concluded his re- marks, which were received with deafening plau- dits, with many thanks and a prayer to God whe rules the world, and all in the world, thathe might make us as happy and prosperous as we deserve. After which, he proceeded to his lodgings, at the American, where many of our citizens had the ho- nor of a formal introduction. 'n the evening our spirited firemen got up a torch light procession, which was very effective. This morning, alter re ceiving the calls of many ladies and gentlemen, Mr. Adams and suite left in the cars for the east, no doubt highly pleased with his tour through western New York Trade and commerce though to all appearance t present present as much activity as during the early part of the sea- son. July is usually @ dull month for business in this city, but! have no doubr it will revive in afew weeks, and Buffalo wil) again resume her wonted life and bustle There has been, if I am correctly informed, more emigration to the fertile west this seasou than for many years. Agreat many Germans have arrived here, who have gone wesi, while others, more wealthy, have purchased from the Ogden company, and settled upon the “ Indian Reservation.” The people ot this city, generally, have recovered from the influenza, which was so prevalent here a few weeks since, and at present | hear of but little sickness. Those who are engaged in the pursuits ef agricul- ture are now unusually busy in securing their crope, which I am told are very productive. So fi far as 1 have been able to learn from the western States, the crops of wxeat and most other descriptions of grain, have come in much better than for several years. The cause of temperance, | am happy to intorm you, is still advancing. Its vast benefits have been felt by many a heart-broken wife, even in this city, and many children who had the mistortune to have intemperate fathers, will ever rejoice that their na- tural protectors have been snatched from the brink of ruin—even drunkard’s graves, oy the temperance reformers. It is, indeed, a noble and praise-worthy cause, and if proper efforts are continued, rum and all intoxicating liquors will soon beeome a drug in ourcity Let those who diligently labor in the cause, be encouraged, and let us, as we ought, become a temperate, happy, and industrious people Under such circumstances our country will improve —our citizens become enlightened and refined—the arts and sciences will be more fully developed, and we shall arrive at that acme so devoutly to be desi- red by every well wisher of our glorious repubiic. Rosie and religion have somewhat revived since my last, and many things seem to indicate a stirring up ot the people. A revival is needed here, not only on account of depraved and wicked sin- ners, but for the benefit of professed christians!— We have many hypocrites among us, who put up long petitions for the salvation of sinners, but such prayers, as Burchard has said, seldom reach above the wolis in which they are heard, and, for my own part, I have almost concluded that our best citizens are among those who never made any high-sound ing pretensions to sanctification. Father Miller, I perceive by an advertisement in one of the papers, 18 soon to appear among us. A tent is to be erected at Cottage Garden, and the services are to com- mence on the 5th ol August; to be continued from ten to filteen days. This, I am inclined Lo believe, isall wrong. Religious fanaticism should never be tolerated in an intelligent community, and such men as Mr. Millershould not be permitted to create an excitement, or werk upon the minds and pas- sions of those who are susceptible of imbibing his silly impressions. He has already produced more insanity, by the doctrines he pretends to advocate, than he can possibly atone for were he to live five hundred years. se Theatricals, so far asthe’ Eagle street theatre is concerned, are beginning to improve. Mr. Rice and his company, a8 L informed you in my last, lett soon after the 4ib inst. for the west, and the theatre has been occupied by a new company from your city, who have presented much attraction to the lo- vers of the drama, which I believe has been met by our citizens with a liberal support’ No other amuse- ments, except steamboat excursions, have been pre- sented during the summer. At the recent sitting of the Recorder's Court in this city, no less than nine were found guilty of State prison oflences, and have accordingly been at tended by our officers to the beautiful village ot Auburn, where they will find a healthy location and plenry of business. These men were not citizens ot Erie county; but as our police officers are re- markably sharpsighted, they were ‘brought up standing,” and are now reaping the reward of con- victed felons. In addition to the vigilance of our police, the new distnet attorney, Mr Havens, per- forms his duty tathfully and fearlessly, so that if rogues are brought betore him, the influence of wealth and respectable connexions, will not shield them from the just requirements ef the law. This is right. Even handed justice should be dispensed to all. The penalty of crime should be awarded Yours, &c. 3%. THE NEW YORK HERALD. — Soe fries wo Vents, 8 ————— Literary Notices, Ram Roap Journan.—Every man who feels interested in the growing prosperity of this country must observe with the highest gratification the pre- sent indications of returning success to the cause of Internal Improvement. Works which had been suspended, will, there is good reason to hope, soon be resumed, and many others commenced and car ried to successful termination Among the great works connected with the interwal improvement of this extended country, railroads and other mear communication are obviously of the first im) ort- ance. We have great pleasure in observing that the public mind begins to appreciate the value of the multiplication and extension of these great means of promoting the settlement and increasing the trade and wealth of ony wide-spread republic Among the efficient agents in promoting the cause of internal improvement, we have pleasure im making favorable mention ot the Rai/road Journal and Mechanics’ Magazine {thas long labored in this important Geld, and has circulated a vart amount of useful scientific information. We are confident that the appeal which the talented and industrious editors have made for public support, will not be ut tered in vain They ask also to be put early in pos- session of information in relation to the operation of the different railroads. It is of great importance tothem nshort they desire to be furnished with any and all information in relation to this vast and growing interest, that may be useful to others, and to the Journal They ask as a special favor, of each Railroad Company, a copv ot their present rates for freight and passengers per mile, or through, a# compared with 1841, that they may form a table giving at one view the charges en all the railroads in the United States. We trust that these very proper and reagon- able requests may be promptly complied with, and very sincerely wish Seo) to the Railroad Jour- nal. \tis published by D. K. Minor and George ©.
