James Gorpon Bennett, Esa. — Dear Ste :— Thave observed that if any event, place, or cir- cumstance is required to be brought into general notice—if it isdesired to communicate any matter or subject to hina, Afighanistan, the Sandwich | Islands, Kamschatka ot Botany Bay, Yucatan or California, your universal columns are made the medium of such transmission; and if I am desirous of hearing from those countries, or any other places that steam or ships can reach on the surface of the Globe, (for I believe you have not as yet any corres- pondent inthe moon) | find the readiest means of acquiring such information is by looking over the pagesot the Herald Now as there are divers per- sons on thissaid Globe, who have probably never heard of such a place as CedarKeys, whatever other keys to Knowledge or information they may have, why wey [noravail myself of the privilege used by soruany others, to impart such informa ‘ion as may perchaace be acceptable to. many within the universe of the Herald's cireula Whats may havé been ah known abroad of this little dot on the wor'd’s map, has been associated with the dia of war, the yells of savages, t?- wroans and sereams ot their uoheppy victims, and all the appalling horrors ot butchery, murder and devastation. But now that “ Grim visag'd war hath smoothed his wrinkled front ” Jostead of bristling bayonets, rolling drums, and the startling trampet’s warning bi we have the more welcome sounds vf pence, with its smiling promises, and that sense ef security and sale which gladdens the heart after danger and priva- ton. The “note of preparation” is no longer heard “To fright the soul of fearful adversaries ;” but asthe busy prelude tothe introdnetien into the deserted haunts of the Savage, of all the arts and comtorts of civilization, of agriculiure, commerce and navigation, over the fertile regions, rivers and bays which have long “‘wasted their fragrance on the desertair,” avd speeded their useless currents unheeded to the ocean. Into these one emigra- tion is pouring its tide. The woodman’s axe aud the felling trees now resound, where the savage beast and more savage red man alone disturbed their silent wastes. A large extent of country, which isto furnish the resources and support to. anew commercial depot in the Southern world, 18 thus rapidly filling up and al ready far advance din cultivation. Asan emporiuin forthe business and trade of this country, nature has provided an ample and secure barbor, with safe anchorage, easy and convenient for vessels, immu nity trom the diseases incident to southern latitudes, In short, abounding in all the Mee, which local and relative position can give. This empo- rium is Cedar Key. This Island or Key, is one of « group known by that name, situated in latitude 29, 5, on the Western or Gult side of the Peniasula, ubout ninety miles S. SE. of St. Marks, near the mouth of the Suwannee ; a river, which, with its branches, has an extent of upwards of two hundred miles, reaching into Georgia, and commanding the trade of several of the tertile counties of that State. Along this river several thousand bales of cotton and other produce have been raixed the past year (a part of which is now being shipped from this port) under all the disadvantages ct a st of savage hostilities and of the necessity of land transportion tor a portion of it, from eighty to vinety miles, which the condition of the country imposed at the time. The country south and east, dependentupon this asa commercial depot, embraces the richest lands inthe territory, extending along the const upwards of sixty, and into the interior from thirty to sixty miles. Within this distance no less than five rivers empty into the Gult, affording sate navigation for vessels of light draught, from the very doors of au merous settlers, to tats harbor, and tucilities tor transportation of produce almost unequalled in any country The products of this region will be sugar, sea island cotton, rice, corn, and nearly all the tropical fruits and plants ‘The rivers, bays, and waters of the gulf abound in a great variety of fish. The tishe- ries xlong the coast were, betore the war, a highly 1 rofirable business, and must again become so, fr the immense quantities of fish, and the facilities tor taking them One individual, ‘known to the writer, (Chaldees,) bad before the commencement of the warcleared $150,000 The far-famed Chesapeake Bay oysters are not surpassed by those which are found in profusion along this coast, and green turte are a8 common here 48 mution and veal in the north. ‘rhe military depot at this key was broken up on the 14th Apri! last. Asaselection for that purpose itwas admir: oly judicious are tempered by the refreshing and almost upinter- rupted sea breezes during the day, which allernating with the setting sun, spring up afresh from the land atnight The nearest distance to the main land is four miles, so that even the land breeze partakes much of the purity and freshness #f the sea, and gives to the hours of sleepa refreshing coolness, rarely felt in ‘the heat of summer in your northern world. Endemical diseuse has little chance of get ting « foothold uadersuca tavorable circumstances tor health, and trom its firet establichment asa mili- tary post, * scarcely any sickness has originated on the key. As | betore stated, the harbor is easy of access The orincipal channel has eleven feet water from sea to the wharf, and vessels drawing tourteen feet can approach it within three miles in perfectly safe anchorage. But what bids fair to place this little island among the conspicuous cities of the South, is the accom- plishmer.: of the contemplated railroad across the peninsula from Palatka on the St. Johne, termina ting in thisimmediate neighborhood, and forming a grand, rapid, and continuous line of intercommuni- cation between your great city and New Orleans in about six days, by railroad and steamboats. The length of this road would be about eighty miles, over a country so level as to require no grading, and aboundirg with the very best of timber for its con- struction. Itis believed, that over such a country, and with such advantages, the road could be built tor $3,500 per mile. But, however near the truth this estimate may be, there can be no doubt, what- ever the cost may be, thet with the immense amount of travel between the North and South, it would yield very large dividends, and the benefits to he country be almost incalculable. He whu has suff red the terrors and perils, the “ Fair breaath ‘scapes in the imminent deadly ditch”—the risk of lite and limb on the land route from Mobile to the Augusta road, will be able to estimate nghtly the r felicity to be found in the speed and se- y of such a conveyance, and its advantages and benefitsto the whole country. On this subject, a gentleman distinguished for his sound views and high characterfor intelligence, and of high rank in the Army, writes—‘‘it would be heresy and a libel upon our ceuntrymen, to doubt that at come period, and not far distant, communi- cation by canal or rai\ road will be established be- tween the st Johos and the Gulf. Commence where it will, at the Keys, or in the immediate neighborhood, it must terminate. The importance of the communication, the time and hezard of navi- gating around the Cape, demonstrate the first, and the nature of the country, the second proposition — It by rail road, the St. Johas and Guif will be vrought within five, and New Orleans and the Pe- sipsula ot “lorida, via L.ke Ponchartrain, within thirty-six hours, Any pointon the t Johns likely to be selected, can be reached from Savannah, un- der the worst circumstances of weather, in thirty- “ hours. { have caused the various entrances by these Keys to be surveyed and staked or buoyed, by which the public transports and steam vessels have at all mes been ab le to enter by day, and in clear weather by night It is presumed, at proper time, the propriety of pscing haht houses at those points will be urged by those having the interests of the territory in charge I trust you will agree with me, that the subjects upon which T have made these hurried remarks, in- volve interests of great public magnitude, and that ‘hey may deserve to be placed betore your army—ot readers. The heats of summer ! Saratoga Springs. [Correspondence of the Herm) Saratooa Srainas, July 19, 1343. ‘The Springs— The Ladus—Newspopers— Politiciane Hotels— Clergymen, etc. ete. James G. Bennett, Esq. :—~ Dear Sir, It is now but little past the middle of July, and Saratoga is well nigh overrun with visiiante. Never betore has the place had #0 large a number at this early period. A quiet, mild man myeelf, I cannot but enter into the mirth and hilarity that surround me on every side, and meet me at every corner. We have all sorts of company—the old and infirm, who come here to enjoy the salubrious air, and gather new lite and energy by quaffing Con- gress water. The middle aged, who abandoa the counting room or the closet, ‘and seek here re tion and pleasure ; the young, who mean to enjoy life as they go along, and visit Sarataga us the best place to do so. And then the gentler sex— God bless their souls, souls, souls, ‘The country through.” As the Tippecanoe melodiats of 1840 had it. They are here in great nombers, from the stately matron to the fair old maid, from the bloeming, blushing twenty-one, to the laughing, romping, girl of ten. Our larze cities are all represented, and by as ace complished and as gay a throng ver graced this tashionable resort. New York hi « Pour’d forth her beauty and her chivalry.” Philadelphia, Baltimore, Boston, and “ the peed. savannas of the south,” have sent us an arr ot heauty, wealth, and fashion, never before equalled. You must come here (or rather the locum tenens of that popular gentleman, who is now abroad, gather- ing new laurels and collecting material to ‘enhance the value of the Herald,) and see them, I cannot write about them and do’ them justice. On ny appearance in Broadway early this morn- ing, I found one of your_newsboys with the Herald of yesterday morning is at least seven hours earlier than [ would have received the paper by mail On enquiry, I learned that the paper arrived by express from Troy at 12 last night! So your agent here shows a_most commendable spirit of en- terprise. At least 150 copies were sol¢_ in balf en hour's time ; the * Tribune” worked off about 15; the * Express’ 9. I mention the tact to show the eagerness to get hold of the Herald,” and the in- ditterence felt forthe other papers I alluded terday to the village papers, the Sentinel and corder (you printed the latter Pioneer). They are of the size of the “* Heratd”? when firs blished, and are sold for three cents—a dead shave, sme think, but a stranger cannot well get along without them, as they contain a register of arrivals and mat- teraot local interest valuable to visiters. The “ Sen- tine’ appears to be the favorite paper, being got ep in better taste, and with more tact, than the corder.” The “ United States” continues to take the lead. Tt has now 800 iemates, 100 more than last year at this date, it will always Se the Permian natch 20 long asthe preseat proprietors keep it The Union ranks next; it is the New England resort, thougha good many‘ Southerners go there. The Pavilion opens rich. If Barnum can keep off a certain incu- bus that has for years hung upon the beautiful Pavi- lion, he will eo on prosperously, but not without. Congress Hall changes; it hasseen its beat days, cannot easily recover i's former rank. Politicians are scarce, thongh there are a few here of the Grub street order. I will not enumerate them. Meithop Waugh, an eminent Methodist, and Presi- dent Olin, of the Wesleyan University, Connecticut, are now here. The former has preached some pow- erfnl sermons Of our resident clergymen, Mr Chester, of the Presbyterian church. stands first as a scholar and polpit orator. Mr Walker, ot the Episcopal, isa man of show, but no substance; he leans to Pusey- iam, contrary to the mass of his ‘parish. Mr. Fletch- er, Baptist, isa sound, well read divine. and popular with all classes. Mr. Fraser, Methodist, is a man of good sense and general reading, excellent man, and «favorite with his congregation. As vou An oart of my last letter, T will save yon that treuble this time, by bidding you adieu for a day or two. Kover = ‘Tue Prisoners at Perore —Having stated, ee- veral times, on the authority of persons who had vi- sited the prisoners at Perote, and on the authority of correspondents (privoners and others.) that the American and Texan exptives at that fortress, were suffering a most vile imprisonment and servitude. it is but just that we should give our readers the firet counter statement that we have met with.
