MONEY MARKK', Wednesday, July 19—6 P; m. ‘The news from abroad had a favorable ¢ffct upon the market to-day, and the prices generally went up. The success of the Illinois mission seems to be beyond doubt. Mlinois rose ¢ ; Kentucky 4; Long Island }. At the new Board sales Government joan at 118} , Har lem rose }. In another column will be found a report of the arrest in London of a person by name of Clinton, chorged with uttering forged Treusury Notes of the United States. Our readers will doubtless remember the success{ul depreda- tlon of some accomplished rogue upon Messrs. Little & Co. about thetime of the Monroe Edwards forgeries. The Bank of America received through the mail a letter pur- porting to be from its corresponding bank m New Or- leans, enclosing haifa certificate of deposite $23,000 in fa- vor of some individual who would personally present the other half The person presented himself and his posses. sion of the half of the certificate corresponding to the one inthe letter was considered sufficient identification of the individual by Mr. Thompson, the cashier, and oa the atrength of it he introduced him to Jacob Little & Co. to negotiate the certificate, and that house purchased it at the market rate. The person took in part payment eight Treasury Notes of $1,000 each. It turned out that the certificate was aforgery. The payment of the Treasury Notes was then stopped at Washington, and a descrip- tion sent to most of the banks and bankers here and in Europe. In consequence of this the forger found great difficulty in selling them. Until within a few weeks he gave 6 of them to the Union Bank of London, to sed to this market, having altered the name of the payee on the face to evade the description. The Union Bank sent them to the Bank of America, and that Bank actually re- ceived and paid them, and the money was remitted to London through Pickersgill & Co. In the mean time the rogue had offered the other three for sale to Peabody Briggs & Co. in London, and was arrested for the forge- ry, in altering the name of the payee. The individual is supposed to be the famous “ Jack Reade,” well known in that line of business. He will now be brought to this country under the treaty, and probably the whole amount of ths forgeries committed at that time $74,000 will be re- covered. it is singular tnat the original depredation should have been committed through the Bank of Ameri- ca, and that that institution should pay the Treasury Notes, notwithstanding that they had been so minutely described, evincing a singular carelessness. ‘The money will, however be stopped in London, and Messrs. Little & Co. will recover the $8,000 Treasury Notes, at all events. ‘The general state of the market for American securities was good, and prices had advanced from the previous ad- vices. In this stage of the affair the ** London Chronicle” remarked as follows We learn by the Acadia that Tllin declined at New York to 34. The price when the Illinois ners left New York tor England having been about 40, and six months ago about 18. The aivance was produced in the first instance by the law passed b tae Legislatu Jinois, for the conipletion of the canal, afterwards by peculative action in the New York market aftecting all public securities of any real or sup- sed value, an iastly, by the subscriptions obtained at Rew York under this law (one-fourth the amount requir. ed) previously to the embarkation of the commissiorers for England. The American speculators represent that the completion of the canal will ultimately establish be- ‘ond all question the credit and prosperity of the dtate.— ‘hat it will place the lands bordering on the canal and on the Illinois River on a with the best lands in the Stateof New York ; di the greater charges of trangpertation being compensated by the superior qual.ty of the Iiinois lands, the price of the Illinois land being one fourth the price of Jands in the State of New York. After making allowance for the exaggerations of Jobbers in land and public stocks, we think there are rounds for expecting that the emigration fromthe At: Jantic States and Canada to Illinois would be very great : and that there would he a great increase in their agricul- tural productions, should the commissioners succeed in obtaining the requisite amount to complete the canal— The great obstacle to their success appears to be unfavor- able impressions entertaiced here and oa the continent respecting the dispositions of the people, and the views of the government in respect to their public debt—impres- sions mainly produced from their not having imposed any, the least taxation in support of public credit— And there are persons who think that in the present state of feeling, and with the present canal law the suc. f the commissioners will be very difficult, not to say ible- ‘The consideration of this question bad, per- in the first place, to the eminent houses, under whose auspices Ilinois Stock was first introduced, and first claimed credit in the great marketsof Europe — These houses, whom we presume will act togetter, must feel the most intense anxiety to protect their friends and followers.
