Fact and Fancy. Taewexpovs Fine ty Saxpwicn Woons.—Cape Cod has had enottgh of diswster by fire the present summer, have to record another conflagration, more destructive by far than any with which we have yet been visited. It broke out on Sunday morning last in Sandwich Od ye between the north and south Falmouth roads. raged with fearfu vislones until yesterday, ali efforts to stop it proving uni ing: The fire, we learn, commenced nearly serene of **Snake Pond village,” and about three miles distant from it, and extended in a south- erly direction to within about two miles of Sand- wich town, It then shifted its course to the south aod burnt within a mile of Falmouth line, when it again took a northerly direction. After traversing a distance often miles, it took an easterly direc- lion, passing to the northward of where it had been betore. crossed the South Falmouth road and ex- tended towards West Barnstable. Some of the woodland which the fire traversed was valuable, but « considerable portion, we understand, was worth but little, as the wood had been cut off to supply the Glass Fa¢tory. Nevertheless the amount of property destroyed must be immense for Cape Cod, and we have heard of instances where the loss has fallen hard upon in dividuals whose entire capi- tal was invested. ‘The fire originated from a stroke of lightning. Of this, we believe there ig no longerary doubt in e who have visited the spot where it commeneed. The fluid struck a large pine tree, shattering it much, eats entered the ground, tea: We learn that | the fire was subdued yes- terday about noon, by the aid of a copious shower of rain. It had extended over to Hamblin’s Plain: West Barnstable, before its ravages were arreete passing within half a mile of Spring Hill in its course. Itis believed that much valuable wood wes destroyed in the latter part of its progre: {t isimpossible to tell with any certainty how much property has been lost by this confiagration, but it must be immense. Independent of the grow- ing wood, there were immense quantities of cord wood burnt.— Yarmouth Register of the Gt. Navan Inreiiicknce.—The U.S. ship Delaware from Mahon, via Gibraltar and Cadiz, arrived at Lisbon on the lothultimo. ‘The U. 8. ship Colum- bus, Capt, Morgan, from ‘Toulon, arrived at Gib- raltar on the 7th ultimo. The U. &. ship Falmouth and U. 8. brig Somers, of the Home Squadron, left Savannah on Saturday morning last; the former bound to New York, the latterto Pensacola. ‘The following promotions and appeintments have been just made in the nav’ Lieutenant Levin M. Powell, to be Commander from the 24th June, 1843, Passed Midshipmen to be Lieutenants—Wm A Parker, from the 16th May, 1843; James D Johnston, from the 24th June, 1843; Thomas R Ware, of Maryland, to bea Pur- ser. Navy Oxvens.—Commender Wm. Inman, order to com- mand the Warren revoked andbe ready for command of the steamer te be employed on Loke Erie; Commander J. B Hull, to command of the Warren; Lients. B. Shepard, J.B. Livingston, and R. E. Johnson, tothe Frankia temporary duty; passed Midshipman John $. Taylor, to the OnXahy-e os Acting Master; Passed Midshipmen Wm.A. Henry, and John Wilkinson, to the Phenix. Froatina Dock at Pensacora.—Some of the | Madisonians Southern papers have complained that the Secie- tary of the Navy has delayed too long the execu- tion of the act of Congress on this subject. The reason of the delay is this: various rival plans of floating doeks were presented to him, among which it was difficult to make a selection without a per- sonal examination of them when in actual opera- tion. He was much importumed by the proprietors of the principal docks to make such examination, and he determined to do so during his absence at the North on a visit of inspection to the several navy yards. Tt is known that, in consequence of the death of Mr. Legare, he was called back to Washington, and could not carry out this purpose. Not being willing to delay his action any longer, he satisfied himself that a selection should be made hetween two of the proposed plans, and he imme- diately wrote to the proprietors of them to offer their proposals. They are now in this city with that view, so that the work will be prosecuted without further detay —Madisonian, The Albany Atlas of Saturday says:—Young Bingham, the absconding clerk, who robbed the office of Mr. Elias Weed, of this city, some time since, has been arrested at Washington, D.C. A requisition from the Governor of this State hasbeen granted, and he will be brought back to this city for trial. Bingham was formerly from Roshester, where he sustained a high reputation for honesty and integrity ; but by the example of wicked com- p anions, and a resort to the inebriating cup, he has been led, step by step, into the vortex of ruin, and is now branded a common felon. SwamervL Bareartry.—A man named Jos. Hut- chinson, residing in Backs county, Pa, Was arroct ed at Willow Grove, on Tuesday of last week, by some farmers, who had become indignant at observ- ing his brutal conduct towards a yousg men whom he claimed as an apprentice, and whom he had tied with several cords to the tail of his wagon, compel- ling him to trot behind, while the wagon was pro- ceeding at a fast rate, "The young man was perfect- ly exhausted when released, and would probably have died before reaching Bucks county. The young man said that although bound to Hutchinson until he was of legal age, he has Jong outstayed his time; and that the erime for which he was then punished was in going off to visit his mother, whom he had not seen for along time, Hutchinson was bound over, by Justice Fretz, to appear at the August term of the court in Montgomery county. An Uncommon Acctpent.—On Sunday morning, says the Dubuke Express of the 11th ultimo, while the steamboat Rapids was lying at our landing working off steam, a wild pigeon flew direetly over the seape-pipe, just alter the pufl had blown off, when the air, partially returning, drew the pigeon into the pipe, and down into the valve, so that it became closed. From this positien it could not be dislodged till the scape-pipe was unscrewed and taken off. Several persons on the landing saw the bird fly in, and caused the difficulty to be made known, otherwise it is possible that an explosion may have been the consequence. Tre Weaturn axp tHE Crors.—We delight to dwell on this theme. The weather could not be better for harvesting the wheat and making the corn ww. We have had six successive days of clear, ot weather. On Sunday afternoon the sky became darkened with clouds, and a war of the elements was foretold ; but all passed off with a gentle rain and a shift of wind to the eastward, cooling the nre- vious fervid heat and refreshing vegetation. Yes- terdey was clear, with delightlul and invigorating tweezes. A friend in Princess Anne informs us that every thing looks cheering to the farmer in that county. The wheat, he says, proves to be a better crop than has been made in that section for many years. The corn and oat crops too, were never more promising, and if nothing happens to mar so fair & prospect, the yield of both will be beyond all precedent.—Norfolk Herald. Horntp Munver Nean tux Saker Roav.—Our citizens will remember the rumors that were rife on the afternoon of the 4th, that the body of a man had been found near the Shaker road, under circumstan ces that left no doubt that he had been brutally murdered and probably robbed. It is now ascertain- ed that these rumors were true. His name 1s sup- posed, to be James Haugh or Haughton. _ _. BOOK-KEEPING. — ME. W.K BARLOW respectfully sunounces th MR. C. C.
