Fact and Fancy: Srizore or av American Fismno Vesser—Tue New Treary.—The fishing echooner seized by the Enghsh and carried into Yarmouth, (N. S.,) is the Washington, of Newburyport, owned by ‘Charles Currier The crew have reached home. The ves sel istaken under the new regulations which we mentioned in the Herald ot the 8th inst., that of drawing the line of three miles from the shore, within which the American vessels were not al- lowed to fish, from headland to headland—and which rale, it carried out, will prevent our fisher: men from ocenpying any ‘of the fishing grounds in the Bay of Fandy, or passing through the Gut of Canso. The Washington, when captured by the British cruiser, was in the Bay of Fundy, 10 miles from Butler's Hole. and 15 from Annapolis Gut, where the Bay is 30 miles wide. The new British regulation of drawing a line from headland to head- land, will cut off the American fisnermen from nearly all the fishing grouads, and should net be tolerated by our government for a moment. The three miles interdicted were undoubtedly in tended to protect the shore fishery on the British coast trom intrusion, and this is the only construc i which our goverament should allow. The | ri- tish might as well draw a line from Cape Sable to Newfoundland, asto draw it in the manner they have now adopted. Disaster axp Surreatno —Captein Blanchard of brig Turner of Portland, betore reported lost, on her possage to Madeira, arrived at Boston on Sunaay ia trig Caroline from Gibraltar Oa the 16:h of Feb- ruary, in lat. 34 45, lon. 30, during a heavy gale. a sea broke over the stern ana washed overboard the man at the wheel, which caused the vessel to broach to, and threw her on her beam ends — The foremast d bowsprit went by the board, and the mainmast was cul away, when she righted, full of water — The crew could not get out but one barrel of bread, which was all wet, and a fewspieces of pork, which, with the fish they caught, enabled them to sustain life oa the wreck forty-five days, when they were taken off by French brig La Furet, trom Senegal, and landed at Gibraltar. Daring the last eight duys that they were on the wreck they had not a drop ot water. They had saved none, but they had caught from the rain enough to last them about three weeks, *llowing each msn apiota day. The crew were ull saved, bur suffered severely srom the exposure and priva- tions to which they were subjrcted. Arremprep Escape oF a Convicr FROM THE STaTE Prison, on TAR Monror Epwakps Puay—AtTEeMPr- Eo Sviciog.— Uhe convict Granvil Rich, advertised .o the Boston papers of Saturday meraing, by the Wardeu of the Ma-sachusetts State Prison, at Charlestown, as having escaped from said Prison ing, was taken on the same night, kK, in attempting to get over the wall that surroands the Prison. | he ¢ reumstances con- nected with the attempted escape of this prisoner are curious, and the plau he adopted is a very in- genious one. ltappeurs that he had cut a hole in ve floorof the workshop, directly under his work bench, and on Friday morning h+ creptiato it, and secreted himselt uader the floor in such a skiltul Mm vneer as to evade several close and strict searches, made during the doy by the officers of the prison lu the evening, abou! 9 o'clock, he lett his hiding place, and went to work in the shop tor three hours vu the dark, preparing a pole, to be used for the pur pose of asvending the wall. He then came out into the yard, and placed the pole against the wall, when he was discovered by the w :tchiman on duty, ani se- cured. He stated that he had endeavored to eflect his eseape by the plan above mentionea, which, he sald, he had been arranging several months. Previ- ousiy to secreting bimseit, he placed a pole against the prisoa wall, thinking that would give the officers of the prison the impression that he had escaped, thereby expecting that no search would be made tor him ia the workshops. Oa Saturday morning, a officer, on going to the cell of Rich, discovered him hanging by his neck by his suspenders. He was in- stantly cut down, and life was found not to be quite extinet The requisite means being applied, he was brought to, and is now considered to be out of dan- ger. We are mformed by the Warden, Charles Lin- coln, Eeq , from whom we gather the above particu- lara, that Rich was a very trusty convict, and had uniformly conducted himself correctly. He was employed asa cooper. Granvill Rich was convict ed of larceny and forgery, on the 26th of January, 1838, at Wore- ster, and was sentenced to nine days solitary, and 11 years confinement to hard labor in the State Prison; and he has consequently served out five years and nearly four months of his term. Larce Lanp Ciamm.—No inconsiderable excite- meat was caused yesterday, among the lot and land holders at Greeuville, in the Borough of West Phi- ladelphia, on account of the appearance of a gentle- maa, @ stranger, who with some papers purporting te be original claims to all the landed property, ihe ste estate of William Biodget. We learn that tor years tnere has been some question as to the validi ty_of les to the grouad comprisiug said estate.— Woet this elaum will result ia, no one knows, but it rtainly excited considerable feeling.—Phil. He was about to meke the Pucbia de los Angeles his head quarters, that he might be able to protect the bishep ALi his soldiers aud most ot his laree guns had been taken thither, aad those at San Diego, (which were spiked by Capt. It was reported that the Mexican Government was about to give up the Missions, now in the hands of the civil govern- ment, to the Padres, who tor many years had charge of them. At San Diego there had been bui lie rain, aod no grass had yet grown on that side of San Luis Obispo. There bad been just sufficient of each at San Francisco to keep the cattle alive.
